Caterpillar Thermal Tolerance
Organisms must continually adapt to changing environmental conditions to survive. We focused on caterpillars because they are very sensitive to temperature and play an important role in many food webs. We hoped to determine if size or phylogeny affect thermal tolerance. We hypothesized that caterpillars with lower masses would have higher thermal tolerance because past studies found smaller organisms had higher thermal tolerances. We also hypothesized that caterpillar species with similar evolutionary histories would have similar thermal tolerances. We collected 156 caterpillars and exposed the caterpillars to extreme high and low temperatures and recorded the temperatures at which they lost motor control (critical thermal minimum and maximum). Our results do not show significant correlations between thermal tolerance and evolutionary history or caterpillar size. It is possible that other factors such as season or symbiotic relationships affect thermal tolerance.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1138/thumbnail.jp
What We Did Then and What We Do Now: A Crisis of Digital Scholarship Champions at Binghamton University
The digital scholarship department in Binghamton University’s libraries was created in 2018 as part of a larger effort to bring digital humanities (DH) efforts to Binghamton. The initiative was largely spearheaded by one person who became one of the biggest digital scholarship (DS) champions on campus. They, along with the new DS librarian, founded a Digital Humanities Research Institute igniting the creation of smaller working groups and initiatives across campus. Our article discusses the role of DS champions on Binghamton’s campus, including the types of advantages they were able to leverage, their interests and goals for a DS community, and what happens when they leave. Champions are a well-researched phenomenon in business and health sciences spaces, but there is sparse research on DS champions, despite the fact they often share characteristics with champions’ roles in those areas. Understanding more about who champions are and what drives them would help DS communities plan for building sustainable and robust communities should their champions leave or no longer be able to participate in the communities they built

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: A Case Study of the Growth of Satirical Television and Disinformation
The increasing popularity of political satire TV programs raises new questions about their function within the information-media landscape. In this paper, I rely on theoretical discussions of how satire can sometimes function as disinformation in order to understand the growth of such programs over the last two decades. Political satire is unique in that the humorous content allows truth to be disseminated in a more palatable way. In some cases, it may be the only way to safely criticize corrupt power structures and those who control them, while in others, it can hide harmful deceit. My analysis of where The Daily Show with Jon Stewart blurs the boundaries of disinformation and satire can help us understand their function in political discourse.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1007/thumbnail.jp
Associations Between Cannabis, Cocaine, MDMA “Ecstasy”, and Mental Distress
Recreational use of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medication and psychoactive substances make college students susceptible to increased risk of illicit drug use and mental distress. An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was administered through Google forms to students across different college campuses. The survey consisted of self-reported questions on demographics, drug usage, and mental distress. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze data in SPSS version 25.0. There is a statistically significant positive correlation between very frequent usage (above 40 times annually) of cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA with feeling incompetent and worthless (p \u3c 0.05). There is a statistically significant positive correlation between infrequent (approximately 1-2 times annually) MDMA use to specific mental distress experiences (p \u3c 0.05). Results suggest those who abuse psychoactive substances may be inclined to use other psychoactive substances, which could be linked to an increase in mental distress.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1011/thumbnail.jp
Comparison of Human Rights Laws Concerning Torture, Access to Medical Care, and Freedom of Movement to First-Hand Guantanamo Memoirs
The U.S. government made use of a CIA black site at Guantanamo Bay detention facility to torture suspected terrorists into providing intelligence following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In spite of their knowledge against its use, the U.S. government authorized the use of these “enhanced interrogation techniques” despite their being in clear violation of the Torture Statute and the Detainee Treatment Act as well as a number of international frameworks including the UDHR, the ICCPR, and the CAT. Detainees rights were also infringed upon by lack of adequate medical care during detention and inhibition of movement following release. Through my research, I have compared the violation of these rights to first-hand accounts from a number of Guantanamo memoirs from Guantanamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Slahi to Enhanced Interrogation: Inside the Minds and Motives of the Islamic Terrorists Trying to Destroy America by James Mitchell.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1026/thumbnail.jp
Happy Medium Magazine
Undergraduate student Trevor Fornara, as a participant in the Summer Scholars and Artists Program, created the first print edition of Happy Medium Magazine under the guidance of faculty advisor Heather Dorn. Happy Medium Magazine is a student-run nonpartisan politics magazine published by Happy Medium, a subsidiary organization of the Student Association at Binghamton University. The project entailed planning, content curating, editing, designing, and distributing the publication’s first print edition. Seven articles were selected to be featured in the edition, and a unique design was created for each page to match the article\u27s theme. Through a collaboration with the Binghamton University Center for Civic Engagement, a detachable voter registration form was included on the back inside cover of the magazine with instructions for students registering on and off campus. One thousand copies of the thirty-two-page edition were printed with funds from the Summer Scholars and Artists Program stipend.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1028/thumbnail.jp
Modulating KRAS Expression for Pancreatic and Ovarian Cancers
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers with a 5 year survival rate of \u3c10% in the US. Ovarian cancer is less common, but it is the third most common reproductive-related cancer and the fifth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Pancreatic cancer and aggressive ovarian cancers have too much KRAS signaling leading to more metastatic and progressive disease and poorer response to chemotherapies. This study focused on examining downregulation of KRAS, through stabilization of unique DNA structures, in SKOV3 pancreatic and CFPAC-1 pancreatic cancer cell lines using oligonucleotides and/or novel indoloquinoline compounds to downregulation KRAS. To date, the novel compound JM65 is the most promising compound that stabilizes the KRAS promoter structure, along with the oligonucleotides HpKRAS_G4 and HpKRAS_I1. Studies are ongoing to examine more compounds as well as to determine the effect of combining these approaches.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1029/thumbnail.jp
Investigating the Relationship between Learning Styles and Teaching Methods for Enhanced Retention of STEM Course Information Among University Students
In order to establish the highest level of retention, one must understand what teaching methods are most beneficial. With knowledge about productive learning styles, professors can provide experiences leading to better procurement of information, skills, and concepts (Pritchard, 2018). The purpose of this study was to examine the association between university students’ learning styles and teaching methods within a STEM course. An online, 40-question qualtrics survey was designed, utilizing questions from the Modality Survey (O’Brien, 1985). Data shows a positive association between specific learning styles and learning outcomes, such as kinesthetic learners performing better in a lab setting. The implications behind this research pertain to how teaching methods in STEM courses may support retention of course information through attending to student’s learning styles.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1047/thumbnail.jp
