The Theoretical Framework of a Postgraduate Course on “Integrating the History of Mathematics in the Didactics of Mathematics”
In this paper a number of theoretical principles on the relation between the historical evolution of mathematical ideas and the teaching and learning process of mathematics are critically analyzed and discussed. These principles are drawn from broader theoretical schemata developed in the field of mathematics education research; for a more specific analysis an attempt is made to examine the relation between the historical evolution of basic algebraic ideas and research results on the teaching and learning of school algebra. This paper has been used as the theoretical framework for a postgraduate course on the didactical application of the history of mathematics
History in the Mathematics Laboratory: An Exploratory Study
According to some researchers one of the ways of using history in mathematics teaching is the hermeneutic approach. In this paper we report on a classroom experiment where the teacher (A. D.) tried to apply this procedure in teaching the topic “exponential and logarithms” to 18-19 year-old students attending the final year of an Italian high school. The used historical sources are excerpts from Euler’s Introductio in analysin infinitorum. The involved students have a low motivation to study mathematics and their learning difficulties emerged also in our experiment. This fact stressed some elements of problematization of the hermeneutic approach that will be discussed in this paper
Since human beings are born, they belong to a world that is \u27ready\u27, in terms of the regulation and evaluation of communicatio with others. The family is the first human society in which parents learn child norms, values and behavior patterns. In the micro world of the family, parents hold the position of ‘significant others’, while the carriers of social behavior outside the family holding the position of the ‘generalized other’, according to the theory of G. Mead. In this research, a questionnaire was answered by teenagers in the Attica region, Greece, with regard to how they view their relationships with their parents, the parenting styles, parental control, and especially in school performance, and, finally, on the desired content of relationships with their parents. The data were processed with the statistical package SPSS, and showed interesting results for the modern Greek family and its relations with teenagers, which clearly demonstrates democratic orientation
Theoretical Problems in the Study of Cypriot Literature
This article focuses on concepts that apply to the study of Cypriot literature. The author explores the identity of Cyprus\u27s literary output in relation to the Cypriot identity. He suggests a common republican civil identity for all Cypriots which could embrace the island\u27s Greek and Turkish literatures. He also argues that Cypriot literature could only be in Greek, and considers it as part of the neohellenic literature. This article focuses on concepts that apply to the study of Cypriot literature.
The purpose of this research study is to examine students\u27 perception of the \u27ideal\u27 teacher. An examination of students\u27 perceptions about the ideal teacher can contribute to school reform through improvement of teacher-students relatioaship as well as the learning environment. The data for this study consisted of drawing, written essays and interviews with the students. The analysis of the data was done through categorical aggregation and open coding techniques. The main thematic categories that came up in the analysis were the following: the personal characteristics of a teacher, the nature of a teacher’s instructional practices, and the nature of the teacher-students’ relationship. The purpose of this research study is to examine students\u27 perception of the \u27ideal\u27 teacher. Holistic management of critically ill economies and other human systems
Economic, medical, social and other issues need to be dealt with holistically and from a system perspective. Piecemeal approaches and ad hoc “standard” interventions seldom work because these ignore fundamental principles such as: interdependence (between parts), structures (to enhance the cohesion of parts), synergies (to multiply the value of each part), dynamic homeostasis (need for change whilst maintaining balance,) entropy (the ailment of closed systems), individual differences (no to “one size fits all” solutions), disproportionality (the same action under two different settings will not yield the same result), need for coordination of parts to make the system efficient and the futility of targeting optimality considering that this concept does not exist in social systems mostly because of human limitations on the ability of people to diagnose and forecast correctly (e.g. is the Cyprus economic problem financial or one of lost trust?) Holistic approaches consider the wider picture; encompass the tangible and the intangible, the economic and the social, financial as well as spiritual fundamentals. Looking at one issue in isolation is hardly the correct way to go about solving a problem.Economic, medical, social and other issues need to be dealt with holistically and from a system perspective.
