The article presents the findings of a case-study that explored teachers\u27 views about the effectiveness of school-based staff development practices and their impact on teachers\u27 feelings of self-efficacy to improve teaching and learning. The study took place in 2013 as part of the evaluation of an action plan concerning teachers’ professional development. Participants were all 10 teachers and the headteacher serving in a small primary school in Cyprus. The study used an anonymous questionnaire and interviews (focus groups) to sought teachers’ views about the issues under examination. The results confirm that schoolbased staff development opportunities are greatly appreciated by teachers, especially when they are linked to educational practice, such as peer observation and co-teaching. Furthermore, they underline the need for continuous support from experts and colleagues in implementing innovative practices in teaching and learning, as well as heads’ role in creating a supporting culture for learning and reflection in school. The article presents the findings of a case-study that explored teachers\u27 views about the effectiveness of school-based staff development practices and their impact on teachers\u27 feelings of self-efficacy to improve teaching and learning.
Since the 1990s and up to 2015 there have been a series of large scale educational programs which were funded by the EU and were dealing with school literacy of Roma children in Greece. In this study, we are focusing on the small scale, i.e. on certain good practices that were initiated and carried out in schools in the context of the program “Education for Roma children” in Northern Greece. Specifically, we are focusing on a single literacy activity that took place in school year 2012-2013 in a school in the wider Thessaloniki area. The activity stands for the creation of a creative and secure context that supports students’ empowerment. Furthermore, the activity demonstrates innovative ways in making meaning in a culturally diverse environment and in promoting school literacy by bridging home and school culture, home and school language
La France et la question chypriote. De la guerre d\u27indépendance à la crise de 1964
The importance of the issue and recent release of the verbatim records prompted us to include an English summary after the French article rather than an abstract.
Greek Foreign Policy: Theoretical Orientations and Praxis
This paper presents the evolution of the field of international relations in Greece and its subsequent influence on the country’s foreign policy. The author tries to demonstrate the existence of a dialectical relationship between theory and praxis, between the politicians and the academia on the formulation of Greek foreign policy.
Two major influences-currents emerge: one originates from the various schools of international relations introduced late in Greece –and not well assimilated in a some instances- and the other is the result of the historical episodes and socio-cultural characteristics of the country.
Even though international relations constitute a new field, introduced in Hellenic universities only after 1974, we can detect a series of problematics raised in the current debate and their close link with the practice and empirical study of Greece’s foreign policy.
Greek-Australian Literature: Between ‘Majors’
This paper discusses the position of Greek-Australian literature as a ‘minor’ between two ‘majors’. The Australian and the Greek (in Greece). It does not however simply attack the ‘major’ literatures for arbitrarily, or unjustly marginalizing Greek-Australian writers, but it attempts to explain why this may be so. In order to do that, the paper critically discusses the writing by first generation Greek-Australians and its development from community oral poetry, to works with a more literary approach, to a few highly ‘textual’ works which have now attained a place in the Australian major literature, albeit not in the Greek as yet. The paper contends that the linguistic and cultural isolation of most Greek-Australians from either the Australian or the Greek ‘centers’, has seriously limited the creation of substantial literary works.

The Research has amply demonstrated that children coming from a migrant background run the risk of school marginalization and drop-out. This situation calls for the formation of a teaching-learning environment that addresses in a positive way the cultural and linguistic diversity in schools. A prerequisite for the success of such a pedagogy recommends exploring the perceptions of students about relations between ‘identity’ and ‘otherness’ aimed at reflection and weakening of ethnic bias. Classroom management as a community of inquiry (Lipmann) can contribute to achieving these objectives, especially the development of students’ intercultural competence. This is the framework of the design and implementation of an intercultural teaching in a Primary School multicultural classroom. According to the results of this action research, part of which are presented in the current paper, the systematically oriented to the principles of interculturalism school teaching can actively engage students, natives and immigrants, in processes of reflection of ethnic stereotypes and positive meaning to the personal perceptions and attitudes change towards ‘others’, which originally functioned as obstacles to the development of an intercultural sensitive optics.

In this paper we present the findings of a research that was carried out in a sample of primary school educators during the school year 2015-16. e research was carried out through questionnaires, focusing on the notion of translanguaging in education and the implementation of educational practices that promote the successful language and culture contact within the Greek classroom. Our findings show that Greek educators may be ready for creative and daring educational procedure which will involve not only the translation of words in the languages of their students but also the use of various practices promoting the parallel and creative synthesis of all students’ languages. Such practices may include the use of identity texts, songs, role play, etc. Moreover, our data shows that there is a need for further training and information sharing on the issues of language and culture contact at school, a need that becomes all the more urgent within the overall current socio-political context in Greece and internationally
The language attitude of immigrant families in Greece has been the focus of various studies, many of which have looked especially into Albanian families’ attitude and actions towards the maintenance of their ethnic language (Chatzidaki 2005; Gkaintartzi 2013; Gogonas 2009; Maligkoudi 2010). However, there are scarcely any studies in the Greek literature regarding the language attitude of families living in Greece whose L1 is a high status language, such as English. In the present study we aim to address this gap and examine the language attitude of non-Greek parents and children living in Greece towards the use of Greek, which is the dominant language of the host country, and towards English, which is the main language of children’s school education. In particular, those children attend two English language private schools in Athens where classes are held exclusively in English and where Greek is taught as a second language for five hours a week. For the purpose of our study, two questionnaires were employed, one for children and one for parents. These aimed to examine children’s and parents’ profile, their (bilingual) literacy, their competence in the two languages, children’s and parents’ language use, and parents’ language practices. The results of the questionnaires point to interesting differences between this study and previous similar studies in Greece with immigrants who speak lower status languages
