This paper discusses linguistic data collected with ethnographic tools from Cypriot classrooms, and it examines aspects of code-switching (either between different languages or between different varieties of Greek) during learning activities in the school context. An attempt is made to show that code-switching, which takes place regularly and systematically despite the fact that the stated aim of the particular education system is the fostering of monolingualism in Standard Greek, is not an aspect of an implicit pedagogy of translanguaging, but, rather, that it reproduces dominant language ideologies and (pedagogical) practices. A comparison is attempted with ethnographic data from a pedagogical intervention focusing on translanguaging as a literacy learning tool, the ultimate aim being for the data from this particular educational context to shed some light on aspects of the occasionally complicated and uneasy relationship between the theoretical constructs of code-switching and translanguaging
Muslim Greek citizens living in Western Thrace are entitled to bilingual, minority education, where both Greek and Turkish are used to teach the curriculum (grades 1-6). In the last few years, however, a growing number of parents have been sending their children to mainstream primary schools, where all subjects are taught in Greek and there is no provision for Turkish language courses. This paper reports on the findings of a smallscale study where interviews with eleven parents were used to collect data on their language practices, language ideology and beliefs, and language management, following Spolsky’s (2004) approach to the Family Language Policy framework. The main issue discussed here is how parents’ language ideology and beliefs are related to their choice of monolingual, mainstream education for their children
When the drama conventions are integrated with the learning context, they can transform the dramatic context into teaching-learning one. The dramatic activities are organized basically upon the learning objectives, creating an excellent environment for the authentic assessment’s application. The paper’s aim is to enquire the process of dramatic - pedagogical activities’ assessment in the teaching environment. In the beginning, the article refers to the dramatic conventions and their importance in learning procedure. Then, a complete dramatic- pedagogical model of learning assessment (bodily-scenic expression, communication, cognition, psycho- dynamic creation) is proposed, where the teacher chooses the objectives which are considered to be more appropriate, according to the kind and the context of the dramatic- learning activities. Finally, there is a description of the conventions used for the activities’ assessment (self- assessment, conversation- reflection, rubric and students’ portfolio). When the drama conventions are integrated with the learning context, they can transform the dramatic context into teaching-learning one. Gamification is the application of digital game design techniques to non-game problems, such as buisiness and social impact challenges (Werbach, 2014). Gamification can accentuate the user experience by introducing a level of interactivity and practice. This reduces the burden on the instructor who instead has to keep the attendees motivated and involved. The current article starts by discussing the origin and the explanation of gamification and the underlying concepts. Then we focus on the use of it in education. At this point we discuss the positive effects it has for the student’s participation. Finally we suggest why and how it can be used by teacher.Gamification is the application of digital game design techniques to non-game problems, such as buisiness and social impact challenges (Werbach, 2014). Greek Foreign Policy: the De-Europeanisation Impact of the Economic Crisis
Greece is a particularly interesting and controversial case for the discussion of foreign policy-Europeanisation. The conventional view of Greek foreign policy contends that a completed process of Europeanisation, both in form and in substance, has occurred. That there has been a clear shift from “nationalist”, “pessimistic”, “defensive” and ethnocentric” positions to a ‘realistic’, ‘optimistic’, ‘active’ Europeanisation. This may have happened to a certain extent but, enthusiastic views about the Europeanisation of Greek foreign policy seem not to take into account a number of issues that existed before the economic crisis, but which have intensified since then. This paper, therefore asks how the economic crisis has affected the Europeanisation process of Greece’s foreign policy. Focusing on the case of Greek economic diplomacy it demonstrates how Europeanisation since 2008 through demanding austerity measures along with strict structural reforms in Greece’s institutions has been perceived as an “imposed Europeanisation”. It is thus argued that Greek foreign policy has not been Europeanised in form or in substance in relation to economic diplomacy. Far from being a completed process, the Europeanisation of Greek foreign policy is a rather superficial development which has only so far, and only partly, affected the elites in Greece as well as Greek public opinion. The economic crisis has further delegitimised any progress achieved so far in terms of the Europeanisation process and has affected in negative terms the way Greeks feel about the European Union
The Global Financial Crisis and the De-Europeanisation of Turkish Foreign Policy
The 2008 global financial crisis, which Turkey has managed to sail through with atonable damages, has equipped Ankara with a sense of overconfidence which led to faulty decisions and misjudgments to the extent that de-Europeanization has recently become a more prominent phenomenon in the foreign policy domain. Notwithstanding the role of individual and state-level factors, it is argued in this article that the crisis, as a systemic factor, has triggered Turkey’s drift away from Europe. In this regard, this article is divided into three sections. In the first section Europeanization as an output will be examined under three subheadings including the changes in the institutional and bureaucratic structure of foreign policy, the changes in Turkey’s approach in handling foreign policy agenda issues, and the changes in the politics of foreign policy. In the second section, the causal relationship between the 2008 global financial crisis and Turkey’s drift away from Europeanisation will be evaluated. In the third section, de-Europeanisation as an output in Turkish foreign policy will be discussed through relevant case studies
