    The influence of aquatic activity on osteoarthritis

    Introduction. In 2020, osteoarthritis (OA) affected up to 595 million people in the world, which is 7% of the population. Three quarters of them are over 55 years old and 60% are women. The pathophysiological basis of degenerative disease is a disturbance in the balance between the processes of formation and degradation of articular cartilage. Additionally, degeneration processes affect other elements of the musculoskeletal system, such as the synovial capsule, ligaments and muscles around the joint. Due to the severe pain, degenerative disease leads to a significant reduction in the quality of life and limited mobility. In the final stage it leads to disability. Arthritis most often involves the knee, hip joints, arms as well as vertebral column. To slow down the degenerative processes and minimize the complications of the disease, effective preventive methods should be implemented as soon as possible. Especially since there is currently no effective drug available for this disease. A popular method of combating pain is aquatic activity. The physical properties of water have a positive effect on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. This review article assessed the effectiveness of aquatherapy depending on risk factors and the stage of osteoarthritis. Aim. Review and presentation of the current state of knowledge about water exercises on the course of osteoporosis, taking into account groups at risk of degenerative disease. Material and methods. Analysis of the studies available on open access sources at PubMed, Google Scholar, National Library of Medicine and Coachrane. The research was conducted through word analysis key words such as: “arthritis”, „aquatic activity”, „osteoarthritis”. Selection criteria for articles included consideration of their title, abstract, and publication date, with a focus on English-language publications. Conclusion and Results.This article demonstrates the positive impact of water exercises on the course of osteoporosis, as well as their preventive effect. The relationship between hydrotherapy and OA in individual risk groups was presented. Aquatic activity has been shown to be effective in inhibiting degenerative processes, reducing joint stiffness, improving walking distance, and mental condition

    Therapeutic and skincare products used in hirsutism and hypertrichosis

    Introduction. Hirsutism is a disorder manifested by excessive hair growth in the telogen phase in androgen-dependent areas: on the face, lower back, thighs and breasts in women with hormonal disorders. Hypertrichosis is excessive hair covering the entire skin surface or limited to certain areas of the skin, independent of androgens. It may occur in both men and women and is not limited to androgen-dependent areas. Hormonal disorders are not observed in hypertrichosis. It may be genetically determined or caused by medications taken by the patient: minoxidil or cyclosporine A. Hypertrichosis most often occurs on the arms and lower legs. Aim. The aim of the study was to identify the therapeutic and skincare products used in hirsutism and hypertrichosis available on the Polish market.Material and methods. In 2022 and 2023, therapeutic and skincare products used in hirsutism and hypertrichosis available in 10 randomly selected pharmacies and 10 drugstores in the Lubelskie Voivodeship in Poland were analyzed. Results. Together 53 therapeutic and skincare products used in hirsutism and hypertrichosis were found. The therapeutic products were available with doctor’s prescription only (Rp.), while the skincare products were available without prescription, like cosmetics. In the analyzed preparations for hirsutism, the most frequently used active substances are dienogest and cyproterone acetate.  Conclusion. The most commonly used form of drugs in hirsutism are tablets, and in hypertrichosis – foams that facilitate the removal of unwanted hair. The new promising formulas for treatment of hirsutism and hypertrichosis contain eflornithine, acyclovir, licorice and vitamin D

    The impact of preparing food in aluminum cookware on human health – a literature review

    Introduction. Aluminum is an element commonly found in the environment. It is used in various industrial sectors, for example as a manufacturing material for food-grade utensils. Aim. The aim of this scientific paper is to answer to the question of whether people expose their health to the harmful effects of aluminum by utilising these types of items for preparing and storing food.  Description of the state of knowledge. Aluminum has a proven noxious impact on the human body. Due to its neurotoxic properties, it may induce clinical symptoms. Excessive exposure to this element is also associated with the occurrence of bladder and lung cancer, while the connection with breast tumours remains debatable. Additionally, aluminum can be harmful to our health, as a component of some medical preparations. Conclusions. It is crucial to emphasise the necessity of complying with the amounts of aluminum consumption recommended by international institutions. Short-term use of aluminum pots does not pose a threat to our well-being. Also, long-term usage in most cases does not lead to exceeding the aluminum consumption standards, although children may be at risk. However, it is good practice to avoid cooking acidic products in aluminum utensils. Furthermore, it is worth washing the dishes according to the manufacturers’ recommendations and replacing them with new ones every few years. In addition, some scientists suggest choosing pots made of different materials, e.g. titanium. Moreover, a noticeable decrease in the levels of vitamin B1 and C in food prepared in aluminum dishes may be one of the reasons for their lower nutritional value, however this issue should be examined further

    Application of natural polymers in mucosal diseases of the oral cavity

    The mucous membrane of the oral cavity is susceptible to various pathological conditions, such as ulcers, inflammations, or tumors. Traditional methods of treating these diseases can come with limitations or trigger undesirable effects. Biopolymers, due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, and ability to regulate regenerative processes, can offer alternative therapeutic approaches. Among the natural polymers used in the treatment of oral mucosal diseases are hyaluronic acid, chitosan, cellulose, and collagen. PubMed and ResearchGate databases were included for a thorough analysis of applications of biopolymers in the treatment of oral mucosal diseases. Biopolymers have a wide range of applications in dental practice. They can be used in the form of gels, creams, rinses, and patches. Natural polymers are utilized as matrices for drug creation and transport. Thanks to their antibacterial, antifungal, and antiinflammatory properties, they are employed in the treatment of conditions like recurrent aphthous stomatitis, lichen planus, and periodontal diseases. Their potential in alleviating symptoms and enhancing wound healing in ulcerative oral cavity diseases has been demonstrated. Biopolymers have also found use in the treatment of oral cancer by increasing the apoptotic index and sensitizing tumors to radiation and chemotherapy. Biopolymers, due to their advantages and multifaceted effects, can serve as alternative methods for treating oral mucosal diseases compared to traditional approaches. In order to confirm their effectiveness, safety, and practical application, further research and assessment of their long-term effects are necessary

    Wstęp: Telefony komórkowe są powszechnie używane na całym świecie, a ich liczbę szacuje się na 7,26 miliarda użytkowników. Zastanawiające jest na ile częstotliwość korzystania z telefonów komórkowych ma wpływ na zdrowie i codzienne życie użytkowników. Istotnymi problemami związanymi z korzystaniem z telefonów komórkowych są dzwonki fantomowe (ang. phantom ringing, PR), wibracje fantomowe (ang. phantom vibration, PV) lub mruganie fantomowe (ang. phantom blinking, PB), które zbiorczo określa się mianem fantomowej sygnalizacji telefonicznej (ang. phantom phone signaling, PPS). Celem poniższego przeglądu systematycznego wg PRISMA było zebranie istniejącej literatury w zakresie fantomowej sygnalizacji telefonicznej PRS i PVS w celu zidentyfikowania potencjalnych nowych obszarów badawczych. Materiał i metoda: Przeszukiwanie literatury przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem baz danych Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO i Google Scholar do 3 marca 2023 roku. Dodatkowe wyszukiwanie przeprowadzono 21 stycznia 2024 roku. Warunki selekcji spełniły 34 artykuły, które zostały przeanalizowane pod kątem aspektów demograficznych oraz psychologicznych. Dyskusja: Zjawisko PR, PV lub ogólnie PPS jest odwrotnie skorelowane z wiekiem respondentów. Wyniki badań wskazują, że liczba i intensywność odczuwanego PV są związane z miejscem, w którym dana osoba nosi telefon. Edukacyjny lub komunikacyjny cel korzystania z telefonu mają związek z doświadczeniem PPS. Literatura wskazuje także na korelację między uzależnieniem od telefonu a PV, PR i ogólnie PPS oraz związek między depresją i lękiem, a doświadczeniami fantomowymi. Wnioski: PPS jest zjawiskiem, które wydaje się związane z uzależnieniem. Przyszłe badania warto przeprowadzić na innych, większych grupach badawczych. Dodatkowo można rozważyć przeprowadzenie badań podłużnych.Introduction: The common usage of mobile phones, with an estimated number of 7.26 billion users, raises the question about their impact on health and daily life. Significant problems with the use of mobile phones are hearing phantom ringing (PR), phantom vibration (PV), or phantom blinking (PB), which collectively refer to phantom phone signaling (PPS). The following systematic review aimed to gather existing knowledge in PRS and PVS phantom phone signaling to identify potential new research areas. The PRISMA systematic review aimed to gather existing knowledge in PRS and PVS phantom phone signaling to identify potential new research areas. Methods: The literature search was conducted using Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO, and Google Scholar databases to retrieve publications up to March 3, 2023. An additional search was performed in January 2024. The selection conditions were met by 34 articles that analyzed demographic and psychological factors. Results: The phenomenon of PR, PV, or PPS in general is inversely correlated with the age of the respondents. The results indicate that the number and intensity of perceived PV are related to where the person carries the phone. Educational or communication purposes of phone use are associated with the experience of PPS. The literature also indicates a correlation between phoneaddiction and PV, PR, and PPS in general and between depression and, anxiety and phantom experiences. Discussion: The PPS is a phenomenon that appears to be related to addiction. Future research is worth to be conducted on other and larger research groups. Additionally, longitudinal research could be considered

    Introduction: The gut microbiota plays an important role in regulating the function of the gut-brain axis. Incorrect dietary habits promote the development of metabolic syndrome, which negatively affects the biodiversity of the microbiome. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the gut microbiota on the function of the gut-brain axis and the development of mental and neurodegenerative diseases. Material and methods: A review of available literature was performed by searching the official databases PubMed and Google Scholar using the following keywords: metabolic syndrome, gut microbiome, metabolic microbiome, mental illness, neurodegenerative diseases with reference to original papers, meta-analyses and reviews in Polish, Ukrainian and English published in scientific journals and articles. Results: Studies evaluating the role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases show promising results, suggesting that gut microbiota influences brain function by modulating the gut-brain axis, the immune system, and neurotransmitter production. Despite the growing evidence implicating microbiota in the development of diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer\u27s disease, and Parkinson\u27s disease, study results often remain inconsistent, which may be due to methodological differences, heterogeneity of study populations, and sample size limitations. Conclusions: Further research on the influence of gut microbiota on the development of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases may contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders and the discovery of new strategies for their treatment and prevention. Further research in this direction is needed to better understand the influence of gut microbiota on psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.     Knowledge of the sign prohibiting alcohol consumption during pregnancy among medical students in Poland – a survey study

    Signs, including pictograms, present in public space are intended to enforce a specific behavior. Due to their simplicity and unambiguity of the message, they can be an effective tool of public healthcare. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge referred to the meaning of the sign prohibiting alcohol consumption during pregnancy among first-year medical students who do not have vast knowledge at present level in this field. The study was conducted among academic youth in Poland, and assumed a 5% risk of error, hence, for p <0.05 the differences were considered statistically significant. Out of the total number, there were 1,123 questionnaire forms correctly completed and these were further selected for the final analysis, which comprised of 751 by women and 372 by men. Among the respondents, over 92% properly recognized the sign warning against the use of alcohol during pregnancy. Moreover, more than 45% declared previous contact with this sign and above 53% claimed that they already had knowledge of the sing’s meaning. The graphic form of the sign allows for its correct interpretation, thus products which may become harmful especially to pregnant women and fetus can be clearly and legibly marked

    L-cysteine sequestering methyl glyoxal prevents protein glycation: a combined in vitro and in silico evaluation

    Reactive carbonyl species such as methylglyoxal (MGO) act as potent glycating agents that are implicated in several oxidative stress-induced diseases, including, but not limited to, cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer\u27s and Parkinson’s diseases. In the present study, a combined approach of initial computational studies and in vitro analysis was utilized to investigate the therapeutic benefit of L-cysteine (CYS), a thiol-containing compound. Based on the reactive analysis using global and local density functional theory (DFT) descriptors, the data reported here has revealed that CYS matches its electron-donating capacity with the electron acceptor, methylglyoxal, making the former a good candidate sequestering agent for the latter. Furthermore, in vitro analysis shows that CYS exhibits significant inhibitory effects towards damaging protein structural alteration and formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Such assessment came about through Congo red binding Assay and Antiglycation Assay using BSA-MGO and BSA-glucose model systems. Additionally, CYS also demonstrates a significant protective effect towards MGO-induced oxidative stress in mouse C2C12 myotubes. Therefore, this thiol-containing compound is a promising therapeutic tool for several glycation or AGEs-induced pathological conditions. The use of more relevant cel­lular and animal models of desired disease studies is recommended to better understand the mechanistic basis of CYS’s potential therapeutic effect. This study utilizing the com­bined approach of computational and in-vitro analysis, provides helpful data to maximize the potential impact of CYS by designing related molecules that could serve as novel treatment strategies that are effective, safe, and accessible to all in the future

    The multi-sided damages caused by the large-scale invasion of Russia has become a great challenge for the medical care system of Ukraine. This research is aimed at studying, analyzing and summarizing data from scientific publications, personal experience, and open sources of relevant information concerning changes that occur in the work within Ukraine’s healthcare system and the activity of medical staff due to the Russian invasion. Special attention has been paid to processes related to relocations of medical staff and health care establishments, field hospitals as an important tool during martial  law, as well as for the different types of support provided by the international partners of Ukraine. Data concerning demographic shifts in Ukraine due to the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war are also presented.     Gender dysphoria and incongruence - neurophysiological diversity and genetic factors

    Introduction: Transgender people may experience gender dysphoria, which is defined as the distress and impairment associated with a person\u27s perception of a marked incongruity between their gender identification and their sex assigned atbirth. The aim of the study is to understand the neurophysiological diversity of people with and without dysphoria, as well as to assess the genetic, endocrine and biological basis of the development of dysphoria. Material and methods: A review of the available literature was performed by searching the Google Scholar and PubMed databases using the keywords: dysphoria, gender incongruity, neurophysiology, neurophysiological diversity and dysphoria, gender dysphoria and genetics. This publication is based on a literature review covering the years 2015 - 2023. Works published before 2015 were excluded from the analysis. The SANRA scale was used to maintain the high quality of the narrative review. Results: Gender dysphoria has a polygenic basis, involving interactions between various genes and their polymorphisms. Endocrine factors are also important, so the most complete picture of the neurophysiological basis of gender dysphoria can be obtained by adding brain imaging tests and measurements of sex hormone concentrations to genetic tests. Conclusions: Determining what biological factors contribute to gender dysphoria may have a positive impact on the mental health of transgender people. Moreover, this knowledge can be used to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment of these people. Therefore, there is a clinical need to conduct further research in this field
