Impartial humour in war times: global and national cartoons on Russian full-scale aggression in Ukraine

    No full text
This article examines the use of impartial humour in political cartoons on the Russian-Ukrainian war. The dataset includes 18 political cartoons from Australia, the USA, Algeria, Morocco, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Greece, Taiwan, Qatar, Iran, Ukraine, and Russia. This dataset is a selection from a corpus of 3,780 political cartoons from 65 countries in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa, and Australia as a part of the research project “Laughter During the War: Russian Aggression in Ukraine in Political Cartoons and Memes”. The analysis of impartial humour is based on the corresponding parameters of political cartoons (goal-target, frame of reference-focus, and means-presentation) supplemented by two criteria: a) the author’s attitude toward the conflict parties and b) the author’s position toward the war and its consequences in general. Methodologically, it is supported by quantitative content analysis (MAXQDA2024). It highlights the unique characteristics of this humor and its significance within the study of political cartoons. The authors conclude that even if political cartoonists do not take a clear stance on the conflict parties, their work still reflects a vision of war as a global evil without borders. The paper offers insights into political cartoons as a vital element of modern culture, providing a platform for dialogue and discourse.</p

Climate and Energy Policy Proposals in the Manifestos of Polish Parliamentary Parties (2005–2019) (social network perspective)

    No full text
These are tabular data presenting the presence or absence of specific climate-related policy proposals in the electoral programs of political parties in Poland between 2005 and 2019.Each row corresponds to one party in a given election year (e.g., PO 2005, PiS 2011, Lewica 2019).Each column represents a specific climate or energy policy proposal (e.g., “reduction of CO₂ emissions,” “phasing out coal,” “renewable energy sources,” “support for energy-intensive industries”).The value “1” indicates the presence of a given proposal in the party’s program, while an empty cell means its absence. The categorization key is a framework used to classify the content of electoral programs with regard to climate-related issues. Its purpose is to capture not only explicit references to climate policy (e.g., CO₂ reduction, renewable energy development, or opposition to EU climate regulations) but also broader programmatic proposals in areas such as economy, transport, housing, or agriculture, whose implementation could indirectly affect the climate. The key consists of four main categories:Mitigation measures – proposals directly aimed at protecting the climate (e.g., greenhouse gas reduction, energy transition, renewables, energy efficiency, afforestation, sustainable development, circular economy, low-emission transport).Adaptation measures – proposals enabling society to adapt to climate change impacts (e.g., water retention, adaptation plans, risk mapping, climate education, blue-green infrastructure, reducing urban heat island effects).Measures explicitly counteracting mitigation – proposals rejecting or undermining climate action (e.g., climate change denial, questioning human impact, opposing international climate agreements, arguing that Poland’s actions are irrelevant compared to major emitters).Measures indirectly counteracting mitigation – proposals driven by other policy goals, but which hinder emission reduction (e.g., subsidies for fossil fuels, support for energy-intensive industries, tax breaks for motor fuels, promotion of car and air transport, expansion of road and airport infrastructure). This coding scheme enabled the systematic identification of climate-relevant content in party programs and served as the basis for subsequent tabular coding and network analysis.</p

The effect of artificial and natural immunostimulants on the hemocytes of Steatoda grossa (Theridiidae) spiders exposed to cadmium

    No full text
The dataset provides insights into the effects of long-term exposure to sublethal concentrations of cadmium on the hemocytes of adult female Steatoda grossa spiders. The study investigated both quantitative and qualitative degenerative changes in hemocytes following six months of exposure through a cadmium-contaminated prey model (Drosophila hydei). Additionally, it examined the responsiveness of hemocytes to artificial and natural immunostimulants, including 12-myristate 13-acetate phorbol (PMA) and bacterial suspensions of Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (Gram-negative).The dataset includes:Cellular composition of hemolymph determined via flow cytometry using a FACScalibur (BD Biosciences) with CellQuest software. Three primary hemocyte subpopulations were analyzed: small, non-granular cells; large, non-granular cells; and large, granular cells. Hemocyte morphology was also assessed using an inverted microscope.Qualitative assessment of hemocyte condition, conducted through transmission electron microscopy (TEM; Hitachi H500).Metallothionein (MT) levels, measured using Indirect ELISA with a protocol optimized for spider samples. A mouse MT monoclonal antibody (Stressgen; 1:1000, 100 µL) was used as the primary antibody, while a goat anti-mouse IgG polyclonal antibody (AP Conjugate, Stressgen) served as the secondary antibody. A comparative analysis of MT levels in midgut cells was also performed.</ul
