Unveiling Resistance Mechanisms to Fusarium Wilt Through Transcriptome Analysis between Cicer arietinum and Cicer reticulatum
<p>Developing resistant chickpea varieties is crucial for combating <em>Fusarium</em> wilt, caused by <em>Fusarium oxysporum</em>, a disease leading to chickpea yield loss. Our transcriptome analysis revealed gene expression changes in resistant and sensitive genotypes of <em>C. arietinum L</em>. and <em>C. reticulatum</em> chickpeas upon <em>Foc</em>0 inoculation. RNA sequencing revealed that sensitive genotypes exhibited a significantly higher number of differential expressions. Genes for defense were activated in all plants upon infection. However, resistant plants specifically upregulate genes acting outside the cell while downregulating internal functions, unlike sensitive plants. Sensitive chickpea plants showed a preference for specific isoforms of 6 genes compared to resistant ones. These genes encode E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase, plastid-lipid-associated protein 11, callose synthase 5-like, enoyl-acyl-carrier-protein reductase, and cell division cycle-associated protein 7-like.Notably, a gene linked to leaf rust resistance (LOC101515334) also exhibited isoform switching. These findings shed light on chickpea Fusarium wilt resistance and open doors for breeding-resistant varieties.</p>
Non-stationarity assessment of intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves of standard duration rainfall in the Eastern Black Sea Region, Türkiye
<p>Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves used in the design of hydraulic structures are traditionally based on stationary frequency analyses with fixed parameters. However, temporal changes in extreme rainfall caused by climate change have made the validity of the stationary approach questionable. Recent studies have focused on updating IDFs under non-stationary conditions to understand the time-varying behaviour of extreme rainfall better. In this context, this study, which aims to examine the hydrological impacts of climate change in the Eastern Black Sea region, estimated IDF curves by performing non-stationary frequency analysis for six stations. Both stationary and non-stationary models of the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution were used to determine extreme rainfall intensities, and the results of both models were compared in terms of the effects of non stationarity on infrastructure design. It was concluded that the stationarity assumption is still valid in stations such as Akçaabat, Giresun, and Ordu. At the same time, the effects of non-stationarity are evident in Bayburt, Gümüşhane, and Hopa stations.</p>
Superconducting Properties of Welded Three Top-Seeded YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-<i>x</i></sub> Produced with NdBCO/YBCO/MgO Thin-Film Seed
<p>This study investigates hollow single-crystal top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO or Y123) samples welded with Ag-added TSMG YBCO solder materials produced using NdBCO/YBCO/MgO thin-film seeds. Three main samples and one solder material are produced by the TSMG method. In order to increase the dimensions of the bulk YBCO superconductor, two slices of the solder material and the main samples are stacked on top of each other with the c-axis parallel and welded at 1030 degrees C. X-ray diffraction patterns, polarized optical photographs, and SEM micrographs are taken to determine the structural properties of the samples. A preferential orientation in the c-axis is observed with a good connection. Low-temperature resistance and magnetization measurements are made for the specimens taken from the welding region. A sharp superconducting transition occurs at 0 T around 93 K for welding regions of W-ab and W-bc specimens. The critical current densities (Jc) are high as in the main samples. At the same time, the Jc values at 77 K and 0 T are found as 1.54 x 104, 1.98 x 104, 2.21 x 104, 2.31 x 104, and 2.36 x 104 A cm-2 for the W-a, W-ab, W-b, W-bc, and W-c specimens, respectively. The single-grain feature is not impaired; thus, the absence of additional grain boundaries facilitates the current passage.</p>

Modeling the mood state on thermal sensation with a data mining algorithm and testing the accuracy of mood state correction factor
<p>Psychology is proven as an influencing factor on thermal sensation. On the other hand, mood state is one of the significant parameters in psychology field. To this aim, in the literature, mood state correction factor on thermal sensation (Turhan and Ozbey coefficients) is derived utilizing with data-driven black-box model. However, novel models which present analytical form of the mood state correction factor should be derived based on the several descriptive variables on thermal sensation. Moreover, the result of this factor should also be checked with analytical model results. Therefore, this study investigates the modelling of mood state correction factor with a data mining algorithm, called Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). Additionally, the mood state is also taken as a thermal sensation parameter besides environmental parameters in this algorithm. The same data, which are collected from a university study hall in a temperate climate zone, are used and the model results are compared with the thermal sensation results based on mood state correction factor which is driven via black-box model. The results show that coefficient of correlation "r" between the MARS and black-box model is found as 0.9426 and 0.9420 for training and testing. Hence, the mood state is also modelled via a data mining algorithm with a high accuracy, besides the black-box model.</p>
Potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for prediction of acrylamide formation in French fries in the potato breeding process
<p>Breeding goals of potatoes for deep-frying purposes include high starch contents, good suitability for long-term storage, and low tendency to form reducing sugars as acrylamide precursors. Due to the extensive number of samples, an accurate analysis of acrylamide in French fries and its precursors in tubers is difficult to implement in the breeding process. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the suitability of NIRS measurements after minimal sample processing for the prediction of reducing sugar contents in the tubers or acrylamide contents in French fries. An external validation with more than 650 samples consisting of 194 potato genotypes resulted in a prediction accuracy of 51 % for acrylamide and 76 % for reducing sugar content. RPD values of less than 1.5 for acrylamide and between 1.64 and 2.23 for reducing sugar prediction rendered low medium to medium model quality. Nevertheless, acrylamide prediction models based on NIRS measurement of mashed tubers categorised over 80 % of unknown samples correctly as being below or above the European threshold value, indicating suitability as rapid test procedure in the breeding process.</p>
Novel asymmetrical oxime ligand-based coordination compounds in conducting copolymer as a useful electrodes for electrochemical supercapacitors
<p>The combination of oxime compounds with conducting polymers shows great potential in improving supercapacitor technology. This research examines the combined impacts of oximes and copolymers in composite electrodes by systematically exploring electrochemical methods. At the first stage of this work, novel Vic-dioxime-based oxime compounds were synthesized and named as [Ni(LoxH)2], [Cu(LoxH)2] and [Co(LoxH)2].2H2O. They were incorporated into copolymer matrices through electrochemical way simultaneously with copolymer production. Analysis of the electrode materials through spectroscopic (FT-IR), microscopic (SEM-EDS) and electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltametric scan rate optimization, galvanostatic charge-discharge tests at different currents, long-cycle stability test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy before extended cycling) provided insights into the structural and electrochemical characteristics of the composites. Areal capacitances at 10 mV s-1 were determined as 488.4 mFcm-2, 286.0 mFcm-2 and 260.9 mFcm-2 for [Cu(LoxH)2]@PGE/(PAn-co-PPy), [Ni(LoxH)2]@PGE/(PAn-co-PPy) and [Co(LoxH)2]@PGE/(PAn-co-PPy), respectively. Capacitance retention was 95% at the end of 1000 cycle in [Cu(LoxH)2]@PGE/(PAn-co-PPy) electrode.</p>

The effect of MWCNT concentration on the electrical resistance change characteristic of glass/fiber epoxy composites under low cycle fatigue loading
<p>In this study, the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotube concentration on the electrical resistance change characteristics of multi-walled carbon nanotube filled glass/epoxy composites under low-cycle fatigue loading was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, multi-walled carbon nanotube concentrations of 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4wt.% within composites were utilized to ensure electrical conductivity. The rectangular specimens for fatigue tests were manufactured by vacuum bagging method. The fatigue tests were conducted in a load-controlled manner with an ultimate strength ratio of 0.6 and at a stress ratio of 0.1. The results showed that the alteration in electrical resistance within the composites experiences a sharp and exponential rise when the concentrations of multi-walled carbon nanotube reach 0.2 and 0.3wt.%, whereas the rate of this increase in electrical resistance is more gradual at 0.4wt.%. multi-walled carbon nanotube concentration. The electrical resistance change curves of multi-walled carbon nanotube filled composites at various fatigue life levels were determined for statistical analysis using the Weibull distribution method. Finally, the average stiffness loss and the average residual fatigue life were determined at the electrical resistance changes corresponding to 95, 80, and 50% Weibull reliabilities at various fatigue life levels and various multi-walled carbon nanotube concentrations.</p>
Reaching millions: Water, substitute infrastructure, and the politics of scale in Kenya
<p>This article analyzes the politics of scale in global development by focusing on a sanitation program in western Kenya. It follows the daily work of a nongovernmental organization that seeks to provide access to chlorine dispensers to millions of people for the purpose of disinfecting water. By engaging with literatures on development and infrastructure, this article proposes reach as an analytic that jointly attends to the aspirations, labors, and uncertain outcomes embedded in scale work. An ethnography of reach emphasizes the temporality of off-grid infrastructures to capture the ambivalent relationships between aspirations and results and between standardization and adaptation, as well as the unstable nature of care. This proves useful to theorizing expansion as potentially generative of, rather than only inimical to, the good life-thereby troubling the vision of scale making as replication often used to understand development projects and their consequences.</p>
