Psychometric validation of the Turkish version of the personalized psychological flexibility index (T-PPFI) in disaster search and rescue volunteers

This study aimed to perform an across-cultural adaptation of the English version of the Personalized Psychological Flexibility Index (PPFI) into Turkish. It was conducted among 604 disaster search and rescue volunteers who participated in the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Turkey. The exploratory factor analysis showed that the T-PPFI consisted of 3 factors, comprising 15 items. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the 3-factor structure fits well. The convergent and divergent validity results performed to test the comparative validity of the scale with similar and different scales found a positive correlation between T-PPFI and The Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Process (CompACT) and a negative correlation with Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ II) and Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21). T-PPFI had high internal consistency (all alpha and omega values were found to be above 0.70) and test-retest reliability (r=0.962). The results of the measurement invariance tests showed that the T-PPFI scores were comparable between genders. Based on the hierarchical regression and higher-order EFA, the T-PPFI demonstrated greater discriminative validity than the AAQ-II and DASS-21. The results suggest that the 15-item T-PPFI is reliable and valid for measuring psychological flexibility in Turkish disaster search and rescue volunteers.

The Role of Exercise in Combating Neurodegenerative Diseases

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s statement, “A healthy mind resides in a healthy body,”

emphasizes that mental and physical health are complementary elements. Data

obtained from scientific studies support this notion, suggesting that regular exercise

has a significant effect on the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases

(Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and Huntington’s) and on

slowing their progression. Elderly individuals are considered a high-risk group for

neurodegenerative diseases. Due to the increasing mortality rates associated with

these disorders, there is a growing search for new treatment methods. In this context,

the aim of this study is to examine the effects of exercise, a non-pharmacological

intervention, on neurodegenerative diseases.

The prevalence and impacts of violence in community pharmacies: a cross-sectional and qualitative study

Background/aim: Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in community pharmacies are at risk of workplace violence, which can adversely affect job satisfaction, productivity, and mental health. This study investigated the prevalence and impacts of violence in community pharmacies in Ankara using a mixed-methods approach that combined cross-sectional survey data with qualitative insights.

Materials and methods: The target population included pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. We examined demographic factors, psychological outcomes, and the nature of violent incidents. From a sample of 355 pharmacies, data were collected via a 39-item survey and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), supplemented by qualitative interviews with 12 pharmacists.

Results: A total of 242 participants took part in the study: 174 pharmacists (71.9%; median age 46.0 years) and 68 pharmacy technicians (28.1%; median age 35.0 years). Overall, 63.2% reported at least one violent incident (58.0% of pharmacists; 76.5% of pharmacy technicians). Verbal violence was the most common form, and technicians reported significantly more violence than pharmacists. Perpetrators were typically patients or their relatives; societal violence and problems in the health system were frequently cited contributors. Many participants did not pursue legal action, citing burnout and a perception of violence as an occupational norm. DASS-21 findings indicated higher anxiety among technicians. Exposure to violence was associated with lower stress and depression scores among pharmacists but not among technicians.

Conclusion: Violence in community pharmacies is common—particularly verbal abuse—and disproportionately affects pharmacy technicians. Addressing this problem requires enhanced training, support, and security measures, and extending White Code legal protections to community pharmacies to improve safety and service quality.

Designing ZrO2-blended nanocomposite MIM capacitors for future OFET applications and their characterizations

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have been exploited as sensors for a variety of applications due to their excellent advantages over diodes and other electronic devices. Capacitors are one of the key components of the OFET designs that consist of a dielectric layer sandwiched between two parallel metal plates. The dielectric layer should be thin and/or have a high k constant value to achieve a high capacitance value (C-i, areal capacitance), so more charge carriers can be accumulated at the interface between the dielectric and the organic semiconductor, for OFETs to operate under low voltage (< 3 V). In this study, high-k nanocomposites (NCs) of ZrO2 metal oxide ceramic nanoparticles (NPs) in varying concentrations blended in two different polymer matrixes, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and cyanoethyl cellulose (CEC) have been utilised as the dielectric layer in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors. The physical and electrical properties of fabricated MIM capacitors were evaluated. The measured areal capacitance, C-i, values demonstrated a gradual rise with increasing ZrO2 metal oxide content in both polymer matrixes. ZrO2-PVDF-HFP-based capacitors exhibited a two-fold increase in C-i, 91.86 +/- 6.1 nF/cm(2) (a 140 % increase) for 10 wt % NP content. Similarly, areal capacitance values of 76 +/- 3.03 nF/cm(2) (a 45 % rise) was measured on MIMs using CZ10 dielectric layer. High average dielectric constant (k) values of 28.61 and 35.68 for CZ5 and PZ5, respectively) were obtained. As expected, leakage current density increased for higher NP % in polymer matrixes. Nevertheless, all MIMs yielded average leakage current density < 1.75 x 10(-6) (A/cm(2)) at 2 V. Therefore, the reported nanocomposites are suitable dielectric layers for OFETs and as platforms for gas, chemical and photoactivated sensing devices.

Error performance of DF cooperative SMTs with I/Q imbalance over Beckmann fading channels

The direct down-conversion principle, which has generally been used in the design of multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) schemes, including space modulation techniques (SMTs), is attractive to researchers because of its low cost, low power consumption with fewer components, flexible and simple structure. However, hardware imperfections such as in-phase (I) and quadrature-phase (Q) imbalance (IQI) negatively affect the performance of the systems with direct down-conversion in practice. On the other hand, cooperative communication is a promising technology that can be utilized in the design of future wireless networks due to its significant advantages such as increasing system reliability, extending network coverage, reducing channel degradation, and providing high quality of service. In this study, SMT-based methods are integrated into cooperative systems, and a flexible and comprehensive model is presented that is applicable to many channel structures. Specifically, the error performance analysis of space shift keying (SSK), spatial modulation (SM), and quadrature SM (QSM) systems in the presence of IQI in decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative communication is carried out by analytical derivations and computer simulations over generalized Beckmann fading channels. The obtained results show that the performance of SMT-based DF cooperative systems is superior to the conventional schemes, and the effects of receiver IQI can be eliminated by optimal detector designs.

Commonly accepted fallacies in established knowledge as an antithesis to cumulative science

This paper critically examines the concept of cumulative science, arguing that its conventional interpretation can impede genuine intellectual progress. Whilst acknowledging that science builds upon previous work, the author contends that the uncritical perpetuation of commonly accepted, yet potentially flawed, knowledge acts as an antithesis to true scientific advancement. The article highlights a prevailing academic pressure to cite established sources to lend credibility, which can lead to the reiteration of erroneous ideas and stifle original thought. Drawing upon the theory of intertextuality, the author posits that whilst no text is entirely original, this does not negate the capacity for researchers to synthesise unique contributions from their intellectual repository. The central thesis asserts that researchers must move beyond the mere repetition of established fallacies. Instead, they should be encouraged to formulate new theoretical frameworks grounded in their own critical conceptions and experiences. This approach does not advocate for disregarding the foundational work of predecessors, "shoulders of giants" but rather calls for a more robust scientific method. True cumulative progress, it is concluded, is achieved not through the dogmatic repetition of old knowledge, but through the courage to challenge it and propose new, rigorously developed ideas that propel the scientific endeavour forward.

Treatment of pistachio processing industry wastewaters by supercritical water oxidation in a continuous-flow reactor

The objective of the present study is the treatment of pistachio processing industry wastewaters (PPIW) using the supercritical water oxidation method. The experiments were conducted within a 400-600 degrees C temperature range and a 30-150 s reaction time range, while maintaining a constant pressure of 25 MPa and using an O-2/COD ratio of 1:1. To observe the effects of the initial PPIW and O-2 concentrations on the treatment efficiency, experiments were also conducted with O-2/COD ratios ranging from 0.5 to 3, while maintaining a constant reaction temperature and time of 500degree celsius and 60 s, respectively. The influence of reaction temperature, reaction time and O-2/COD ratio on the total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) contents of the liquid PPIW effluents were investigated. Treatment efficiencies up to 99.75% regarding TOC conversion and 78.72% regarding TN conversion were obtained in very short reaction times. Additionally, the kinetics of oxidation of PPIW was studied, and reaction rate expressions based on TOC and TN were proposed.
