«Quest’Arena musicale»: Rossini a Verona prima del Congresso

    No full text
Abstract: During Verona’s Congress, Gioachino Rossini was the protagonist of musical events. His presence was strongly desired by Metternich. The composer’s operas and cantatas performed in the city between September and December 1822 shed light on peculiar features of the Restoration, such as the reference to figures representing regality or to political issues considered sensitive (if not problematic) during the period of the Congress. Linguistic-Cultural Transmission and Mediation between Parents and Children in Montecore. En unik tiger by Jonas Hassen Khemiri and De kaller meg ulven by Zeshan Shakar

    No full text
The object of analysis are the novels Montecore. En unik tiger by Jonas Hassen Khemiri and De kaller meg ulven by Zeshan Shakar, which explore some of the conflicts, negotiations, and ambivalences that are taking place in Sweden and Norway in relation to migration phenomena. In both cases, it is possible to identify a tendency typical of postmigration literature, namely a retrospective glance by the younger generations at their parents’ migration experiences. The relationship between father and son is fundamental in both novels, and language takes on central importance, becoming an expression of specific identity projects or of a heritage that is feared to be lost with the passing of generations. By analyzing the two novels in parallel, the aim is to show the wide range of forms of multilingualism and the different functions that language can take on in diasporic contexts

A Messy Language. The Linguistic Conflict in Modern Lebanese Literature

    No full text
The article analyzes the linguistic conflict in modern Lebanese literature as a reflection of the nation’s fragmented identity. Between Arabic, French, English, and the Lebanese dialect, language becomes both a site of tension and a tool of creation. Through the works of Farjallah Hayek, Amin Maalouf, Wajdi Mouawad, and Morice Awwad, the study explores how multilingualism shapes literary form, ideology, and self-representation. Each author reveals a distinct negotiation with linguistic plurality – through hybrid syntax, voluntary grafting, universalizing abstraction, or rebellious dialectal expression. The analysis argues that Lebanese literature transforms linguistic disorder into aesthetic harmony, asserting a unique “Lebanophone” voice that transcends identity conflicts.L’articolo analizza il conflitto linguistico nella letteratura libanese moderna come riflesso della frammentazione identitaria della nazione.

Communicating Social Equity and Environmental Protection on the Corporate Websites of Gap Inc. and House of Hermès

    No full text
This paper looks into the impact that business model, history and corporate culture might have on sustainability communication (Dunphy et al. 2000) and transparency (Wehmeier 2018; Rawlins 2009; Graafland and Nihof 2007; Graafland et al. 2004) in the fashion industry (Koskela and Crawford Camiciottoli 2020). The aim of this study is to identify (dis)similarities in selecting, presenting and communicating online contents about corporate sustainability on Gap Inc.’s international corporate website and House of Hermès, or Hermès International A.S.’s e-commerce and corporate website. In their sectors and segments (middle-mass/trendy vs. old luxury-super-premium/classic) Gap Inc. and Hermès are among the relatively high scoring companies on the Fashion Transparency Index 2020 (FTI 2020); the former is based in the USA, the latter in France. Whereas the analysis is embedded in the context of current discussion on organizational and communication transparency in business settings, we set the groundwork for a unified account of transparency in corporate website communication. Accordingly, we bring together insights from discourse studies, the tools of corpus linguistics for the digital written text around sustainability and related words in the domains of social equity and environmental protection on the one hand, and insights from research in webpage usability (Nielsen-Norman group) and multimodal studies (Bateman 2014) for content- and interface-design features, layout and text-image meaning co-construction on the other

Figurative Language between Transparency and Persuasion: A Multimodal Analysis of Transport for London Instagram Posts

    No full text
This paper examines the use of figurative language, specifically metaphors and metonymies, in Transport for London (TfL)’s Instagram profile. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980) and Radden and Kövecses’ (1999) taxonomy, the study investigates how figurative language possibly contributes to transparent communication and engagement in the TfL’s Instagram posts. The advent of social media platforms has transformed the way public bodies, such as TfL, engage with citizens, stakeholders, and the wider public. This research aims to provide insights into how public bodies use figurative language on social media platforms, focusing on verbal and visual modes of communication. Results reveal that TfL strategically employs metaphors and metonymies to promote services and shape brand image. Metaphorical imagery, such as tube stop symbols representing locations, serves to showcase TfL’s extensive network and to encourage user interaction. Therefore, figurative language seems to be primarily used for promotional purposes, rather than to provide information about the services. The study emphasises the importance of integrating figurative language with factual information to enhance transparent communication

The Rise of the “New Depression” in the Harper’s essay and in The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen

    No full text
In his 1996 essay “Perchance to Dream: In the Age of Images, a Reason to Write Novels,” Franzen makes a public call for highbrow novels to rise to the challenges posed by the ‘therapeutic’ culture of the late twentieth century. As he explains, this culture is characterized by the tendency to pathologize psychological or emotional problems, which come to be regarded solely as symptoms to be treated with an instantaneous biochemical remedy. This phenomenon has induced an over-reliance on new-generation antidepressants. Such circumstances, I argue, are cleverly parodied in Franzen’s third novel, The Corrections (2001).

The Translation of Horror Splatter for Children in Italy: Darren Shan and his Demonata Saga in Translation

    No full text
Shavit (1986) pioneered in treating children’s literature as texts received in the context of target literature, highlighting the specific constraints this genre faces and how these constraints lead to deviations from the source text. Taboo topics, such as sex and violence, are often excluded from children’s literature within a given society. Central to Shavit’s historical argument is the assertion that modifications to source texts align with prevailing notions of what is deemed educationally ‘beneficial for the child’ in the cultural context of the time. In recent decades, translators have tended to place greater trust in children’s ability to engage with differences; however, the adaptation of cultural details remains apparent, particularly in the translation of cultural references (e.g., food). What remains crucial is the role of the intended child reader in the translation process (O’Sullivan 2005) and its impact on the final product. In contemporary contexts, deviations from the source text have diminished, as exemplified by the Demonata Saga by Irish author Darren Shan, translated into Italian between 2007 and 2010. Unlike the Goosebumps series by American author R. L. Stine, Shan’s novels draw inspiration from splatter horror, and their success suggests that Gothic elements which gained popularity in adult culture are beginning to influence children’s literature as well (Buckley 2017). Shan utilizes tropes and imagery from splatter supernatural narratives, including demons that torment humans, themes of madness, and unsettling visions. This paper examines the translation of the first book, Lord Loss (2005), noting that it underwent no adaptations, which likely contributed to the series not being fully published; only six of the ten books in the series were translated. This assertion is supported by an interview with the author and the fact that the books are now out of print

The ‘Transparency Effect’ in Pharmaceutical ESG Reports

    No full text
As the pharmaceutical sector has become increasingly competitive, companies have adopted a plethora of strategies and practices not only to publicise their products but also to be perceived by stakeholders as transparent and, by way of implication, honest and ethical. Drawing on a corpus of English-language Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reports, this study investigates the complexity and dynamism of the discursive strategies used by leading pharmaceutical companies listed on the stock exchange to build and enhance an image of transparency and credibility. By distinguishing between the level of the utterance – what is being communicated – and the enunciational level (Greimas & Courtés 2007; Greimas 1983), which regards the writer and the context of enunciation, this paper conducts a semio-linguistic analysis in an attempt to explore different construals of transparency and opacity. The discourse of pharmaceutical companies is revealed as a sophisticated communicative construct, where various strategies are employed to create meaning effects that are used to foster an image of transparency and boost stakeholders’ trust
