No full textA partir del periplo del protagonista de Adramón, un libro de caballerías castellano manuscrito de comienzos del siglo XVI, se propone una reflexión sobre el papel que las ciudades, ampliamente representadas y descritas en la trama, juegan en el desarrollo del personaje principal de esta obra. Se destaca, además, el interés del autor anónimo por configurar un mundo literario realista, propuesta de ficción que encuentra fundamento en las herencias de los libros de viaje medievales y de las cuales se vale el escritor para crear el entorno urbano en el que se desenvuelve el caballero.Adramón, a manuscript romance of chivalry written at the beginning of the 16th century, gives rise to a reflection on the role that cities play in the development of the main character of the work, widely represented and described in the plot line and issues. In addition, the anonymous author’s interest in configuring a realistic literary world marks out a work that finds its foundation in the legacies of medieval travel books which are used by the author to create the urban environment in which the protagonist develops

Scopo del contributo è analizzare, attraverso i due romanzi, la fisionomia di un corpus letterario sviluppatosi al di fuori dei paradigmi novecenteschi, cercando di individuare le cause dell’estraniamento e dell’alienazione che ancora gravano sulle macerie della vecchia Heimat.Focusing on the debut novels by Helene Hegemann (Axolotl Roadkill, 2010) and David Lopez (Fief, 2017), the article aims to shed light on the still ambiguous features of 21st century European Literature. «Not A Coming Or A Going At All». Looking for Home in Amitav Ghosh’s «The Shadow Lines»
No full textThe article considers the complexity of the concept of “home” in Amitav Ghosh’s novel The Shadow Lines (1988). I will examine how matters of migration and homesickness intersect a contemporary idea of a global borderless space, as well as the interrelationships and the exchangeability among topics like border, space, and home in Ghosh’s work. I will demonstrate that different characters of the novel correspondingly embody different ways of perceiving home and themes of crossing-borders: the narrator’s grandmother Tha’mma is the fictional representation of an ancient conceptualisation of borders and geo-localisation, while the narrator himself and his uncle Tridib are emblems of an innovative perception of space.Also, the relationships between characters consequently produce an idea of home in movement. This may lead to a significant change in the ancestral perception of home seen as a supportive milestone for human life: borders, space, and home are exploited by Ghosh in a sort of unceasing circle in which each element influences and completes the others. After all, the task that primarily concerns Ghosh is, as well, «not how to arrive, but how to move, how to identify convergent and divergent movements; and the challenge would be how to locate such events, how to give them a social and historical value» (Carter 1992, 101)
Dostoevsky in Polish Post-War Humanist Reflection
No full textA reflection on Dostoevsky’s place in post-war Polish literature and science. Constantly present and free from ideological and political pressures in émigré literature, it endured limitations typical of all communist countries, especially in the Stalinist era. The problem of Dostoevsky’s attitude towards Poles bothered (and still bothers) contemporary Polish researchers. It is difficult to identify an important author in Polish émigré literature who did not refer to Dostoevsky. The writer appears in various ways in essays (Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Czesław Miłosz, Aleksander Wat, Józef Czapski, Józef Wittlin), in diaries (Lechoń, Gombrowicz, Bobkowski, Herling-Grudziński), in fictionalized accounts of Polish prisoners of the Gulag (Stanisław Swianiewicz, Wacław Grubiński), which significantly related to Notes from a Dead House. Dostoevsky returned to the official culture of People’s Republic of Poland with the ‘rehabilitation’ of metaphysical and experimental literature in the late 1950s. But until the fall of communism, Polish Dostoevskyologists had to deal with censorship pressure, with the awareness of possible interference. Nevertheless, the most important achievements of the period of the thirty years 1957-1989 in the reflection on the Russian genius will certainly remain in the Polish humanities forever.Keywords: Dostoevsky in Poland, Polish-Russian literary relationship, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Czesław Miłosz, Witold Gombrowicz, Andrzej Walicki, Ryszard Przybylski, Andrzej de Lazari

Showcasing Motorbikes and Sewing Machines: Promotional Language on Husqvarna Websites
No full textHow do companies that produce highly diverse merchandise promote their different goods and how do they target them to their consumers? The Husqvarna brand is known for containing several divisions that manufacture a wide range of products from motorbikes to chainsaws and sewing machines. Each of these companies has its own dedicated webpage, which represents an important space for self-promotion and presentation of the characteristics of their products. However, while Husqvarna has been widely studied in terms of marketing and corporate social responsibility, whether the brand’s promotional strategies relative to the diverse products are more or less the same or change accordingly remains to be investigated. The present study sets out to fill this gap by examining how motorbikes and sewing machines are described and promoted on the respective Husqvarna websites by looking at branding, targeting, and promotional language. In order to carry out our analysis, we created two corpora from the official US Husqvarna Motorcycles and Sewing Machines websites. The two corpora have been analysed following both a quantitative and qualitative approach, combining corpus linguistics and appraisal theory (Martin and White 2005). This case study will yield insights on how multidivisional companies promote their different products and how they target them for their different audiences
Re-enacting the American Frontier in Contemporary Popular Culture: The Western Fantasy of “Red Dead Redemption II”
No full textGrounded in the theoretical framework of adaptation theory (Hutcheon 2006; Flanagan 2017), the present paper discusses the transmedia recreation of the myth of the Western frontier in American contemporary culture. The case study of the blockbuster video game Red Dead Redemption II (Rockstar Games 2018) will help illustrate the enduring success of the Western mythology, whose pervasiveness in American history and 20th-century popular culture cuts across different media and artistic forms (Slotkin 1992; Rosso 2010; Moretti 2018). In fact, Red Dead Redemption II can be understood in terms of creative reinterpretation and interactive counterpart of the literary tropes pertaining to the Western imagery and its representation, a “postwestern rewriting” construed upon textual, rhetorical, and socio-cultural layers (Cawelti 1999; Rosso 2008 and 2016). Defined in a review by The Washington Post as “jaw-dropping,” Red Dead Redemption II simultaneously contains narrative elements (Juul 2001), and matches a kind of “aesthetics of excess” deeply rooted in the late 19th-century literary imagination, which ranges from dime novels to naturalistic fiction (Denning 1998; Newlin 2011; Rosso 2014). At the same time, Red Dead Redemption II represents a transmedia storytelling of the American frontier, whose ‘history’ and experience the player can interactively rewrite. Thus, in its economic and artistic value, this video game renegotiates a cultural myth still appealing to the entertainment industry and its marketplace
