Senses of the Ending: Immaginazione letteraria e politica della crisi ambientale
The principles of hypostasing eternity in the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky The Brothers Karamazov
The article examines Dostoevsky’s attitude to eternity, as well as how this phenomenon is “depicted” (hypostatized) in the artistic world of The Brothers Karamazov. An attempt has been made to recreate the scientific paradigm of criteria, or principles, that make it possible to accurately reveal the only (singular) text zone in the novel, in which the characters as well as readers meet “other worlds” and communicate with eternity.

Item Writing and Dyslexic Students: Promoting Best Practices
In language testing, item writing is an important process which can be creative, rewarding but also challenging and sometimes frustrating. Quality items are fundamental for test validity and item writers can be formally trained in order to improve what they write (Rossi and Brunfaut 2019). The present study analyses some items specifically written for dyslexic students as part of a high-stakes, Internet-based B1 English test administered to undergraduate students in an Italian university, namely the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where the number of dyslexic students enrolled has increased exponentially in recent years. The aim was to investigate whether the accommodations suggested by the item reviewer succeeded in removing unnecessary barriers which represent an unintended bias, while preserving the test construct and consequently its validity (Pelleriti 2018; Kormos and Smith 2012).For the present investigation, a questionnaire was devised, and four certified dyslexic students were interviewed on a voluntary basis. The data collected during the semi-structured interviews confirmed that some of the suggested accommodations would be beneficial, whereas others would be detrimental to candidates with dyslexia. As a consequence, some conclusions have been drawn, with the aim of sharing best practice among the language testing community—in particular language testers, test developers, and item writers. Nevertheless, this research has also confirmed that item writing undoubtedly deserves more scholarly attention, in an attempt to shed light on this pivotal aspect, which is at times neglected despite being one of the pillars in language testing

Scripting the Communication Strategy for Mineral Water Advertising in the USA: A Multimodal Textual Analysis
The discourse of advertising, along with its functions and structure, has been studied for many years from several points of view. Modern communication relies both on explicit messages and, more frequently, implicit messages, which can be more effective in delivering an intimate promotional essence. The germinal idea behind this paper stems from the prototype theory—formulated by Rosch (1978) and developed by a number of other scholars (e.g., Geeraerts 2006; 2016; Ross and Makin 1999; Aitchison 1994)—and, more specifically, from the prototypical paths it generates (scripts). We explore the possibility of applying scripts to advertising. Of particular interest are the effects that changes to the script produce in terms of the promotional message and consumer perception of the advertised product. The advertising sphere chosen for this study is the US mineral water market; a corpus of Instagram advertisements, retrieved from the pages of the main US producers of bottled mineral water (2,223 tokens), was selected and both their verbal and non-verbal aspects were analyzed. The results confirm our hypothesis of the presence of script change in advertising: such results offer a basis for further research to establish a predictive model for advertising communication that can be applied to various advertising channels (commercials, digital advertisements, etc.) and different products
From Within Outwards: Self-Culture and Social Reform in “Woman in The Nineteenth Century”
This article examines the use of self-culture in Margaret Fuller’s Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1845) and sees it as inherently related to the calls for social reform that pervaded the works of American literary Romanticism from the 1830s to the start of the Civil War. Fuller’s Woman, now considered a manifesto of American feminism, is a unique example of transcendentalist ideas applied to gender issues. By exploring Fuller’s application of the concepts of self-culture and self-development, this essay wants to demonstrate that she uses this rather abstract notion to analyze and propose a solution to the condition of women in Antebellum America, thus advocating for a change that was meant to affect society and the nation as whole. I argue that her feminist self-culture is to be interpreted not as an end, but rather as a part of a circular process that aims at fostering social reform, thereby resolving the perceived opposition that seems to exist in Transcendentalism between individualist stances and communal reform efforts
Job or Jonah? Re-elaborating and Overcoming Biblical Paradigms in Philip Roth’s “Nemesis”
As commentators like Coetzee, Batnitzky and Stangherlin have already stated, Philip Roth’s 2010 novella Nemesis can be read as a complex reconfiguration of some tropes belonging to Greek mythology juxtaposed to a rewriting of the Jewish Biblical tradition: embracing features from Oedipus, Prometheus, and Job, Eugene “Bucky” Cantor is the result of Roth’s “audaciousness of combining the characteristics of a fundamentally Judeo-Christian figure with that of the Greek tragic hero withing a single character” (Stangherlin 2016, 75). However, as regards his pervasive and conflicted relationship with God, I believe an examination of Bucky Cantor through the lenses of the Jewish Biblical tradition may shed new light on Roth’s peculiar characterization of the novella’s protagonist. Building on contributions by the abovementioned authors, I argue that Bucky Cantor can be investigated as the point of intersection between two different Biblical models, Job and Jonah, and that his character overcomes the archetypical status of each of his paradigms. Although Bucky is immediately associated with the Joban themes because of his extreme position as regards theodicy, his sudden abandonment of the playground students—considered by Bucky as his responsibility and mission at the beginning of the narration—reminds the reader of Jonah’s rejection of God’s will. Ultimately, Bucky’s ‘whale’ consists of his role in the spread of the polio epidemic, which is also the pinnacle of his religious crisis: “God gave me polio that I in turn gave to at least a dozen kids, probably more” (Roth 2010, 263)

Imperfect Fictions: Rabelais, Cervantes, Aristotle, and the Ambiguity of the Novel
The contribution investigates from a theoretical perspective the primacy of Rabelais and Cervantes in the birth of the modern novel.
