    Translating Humorous Literature : Translation Strategies in “Come vivere in un appartamento” by K. R. G. Browne and H. W. Robinson

    How to Live in Flat is a book written in 1936 by Kenneth R.G. Browne and illustrated by Heath W.  Robinson, a well-known artist of the age, famous for having illustrated Andersen’s books but also for his sketches and drawings of fabulous machines and gadgets invented to solve every day little problems in a cumbersome and improbable manner. This book is the first of a series produced by the two artists; each volume of the series has the form of a handbook full of suggestions and advice for specific hobbies (How to Make a Garden Grow, 1938) or to deal with the problems related to marriage and married life (How to be a Perfect Husband 1937). Translating these texts tackles three types of difficulties and constraints: first, their chronological and cultural distance (England between the two World Wars); secondly, their humorous and ironical style used by Browne, as a writer, and by Robinson, as an illustrator; finally, the presence of illustrations which depict episodes of the narrative, thus creating a sort of dialogue between the written and the pictorial texts. This study stems from the translation of the first book of the series, How to Live in a Flat, and intends to discuss and explicit the translation choices made in order to recreate the equivalent humorous effect in the target text and on the target audience, which are both culturally and chronologically distant from the source text

    In the field of academic discourse analysis close attention has been paid to the study of metadiscourse and to the analysis of recurrent sequences of words, variously called phraseology, lexical bundles or formulaic language. In particular, multi-word units have been comparatively explored in writing by both native vs. non-native speakers of English, and novice vs. expert authors. Although the native/non-native divide has been questioned in favour of novice vs. expert distinction and expertise as more important aspects affecting language patterning, extensive research has considered academic writing by native English speakers vs. English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Based on the assumption that native student writers and English learners have different levels of literacy in English and do not face the same difficulties in utilising formulaic language, the present study sets out to investigate the metadiscursive constructions most frequently used in academic writing by Italian EFL vs. L1 English students. The non-native material consists of theoretical and empirical essays in English Linguistics and Translation written by third-year students graduating in Foreign Languages at an Italian University. With regard to the native-speaker material for comparison, part of the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus was utilised, and essays written by L1 English students of linguistics were selected. With the support of corpus linguistic tools, recurrent metadiscursive bundles were identified in the two databases and examined both quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysis points to and discusses aspects of convergence and divergence between Italian EFL and L1 English student essays in the use of metadiscursive constructions

    Magyd Cherfi\u27s La part de sarrasin and Mohammed Aïssaoui\u27s Les Funambules open up various questions about the identity of children from the Algerian immigrant community in France, «at the crossroads of cultures and generations».     In A Bend in the River (1979) V.S. Naipaul rappresenta uno stato dell’Africa centrale che cerca vanamente di affrancarsi dal dominio coloniale. Il punto di vista è quello di Salim, un giovane che lascia la costa orientale per stabilirsi nel cuore del continente. Il senso di dislocazione del protagonista, acuito dai ripetuti tentativi di modernizzazione del paese perpetrati dal dittatore e conclusi con violenze e ribellioni, è accresciuto dalla presenza di alcuni elementi naturali. La foresta, il fiume non sono solo entità fortemente segnate dallo sfruttamento coloniale, come l’ecocritica contribuisce a evidenziare, ma anche strutture intertestuali e simboliche.In A Bend in the River (1979) V.S. Naipaul depicts a central African state vainly trying to free itself from colonial rule. The focaliser is Salim, a young man who moves from the east coast to the heart of the continent. The protagonist’s sense of dislocation, exacerbated by the violence and rebellions following the dictator’s attempts to modernize the country, is also increased by some natural elements. Not only are the forest and the river natural entities strongly marked by colonial exploitation, as ecocriticism contributes to pointing out, but they are also intertextual and symbolic structures

    Nell’articolo si riflette problematicamente sull’idea di genere letterario in relazione alla forma romanzo. Partendo dalle considerazioni di un saggio di Enzo Melandri e in considerazione delle più recenti attitudini teoriche, si analizza la possibilità di risalire lungo i processi storici del romanzesco attraverso un’archeologia paziente che aiuti nel recupero dei testimoni testuali; si ipotizza l’impossibilità intrinseca di arrivare alla scaturigine originale di ciò che è romanzesco ma si prospetta l’ipotesi del romanzesco come modello a sé legato a strutture profonde e radicate nel tempo. In questa ottica, la divisione di compiti tra le più recenti indagini sperimentali e la critica letteraria sul campo devono procedere come due fasi e con due strumentazioni diverse, ma comunicanti e sodali e con momenti e punti di contatto.El artículo reflexiona problemáticamente sobre la idea de género literario en relación con la forma novela. Partiendo de las consideraciones de un ensayo de Enzo Melandri y considerando las actitudes teóricas más recientes, se analiza la posibilidad de rastrear los procesos históricos de la novela a través de una arqueología paciente que ayude en la recuperación de los testimonios textuales; se hipotetiza la imposibilidad intrínseca de llegar a la fuente original de lo ficcional pero se plantea la hipótesis de lo ficcional como modelo en sí mismo ligado a estructuras profundas enraizadas en el tiempo. Desde este punto de vista, la división de tareas entre las investigaciones experimentales más recientes y la crítica literaria debe proceder en dos fases, pero comunicantes y con momentos y puntos de contacto.The article reflects problematically on the idea of ​​literary genre in relation to the novel form. It starts from the considerations of an essay by Enzo Melandri and taking into account the most recent theoretical attitudes, analyzes the possibility of tracing the historical processes of the novel through a patient archeology that helps in the recovery of textual witnesses. The intrinsic impossibility of arriving at the original source of what is fictional is hypothesized, but the very hypothesis of the fictional as a model in itself, linked to deep structures rooted in time, is proposed. From this point of view, the division of tasks between the most recent experimental research and literary criticism in the field must proceed as two phases and with two different instruments, but communicating and companions and with moments and points of contact

    En este trabajo se analiza la materia caballeresca que aparece en el teatro de Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla. En su corpus dramático encontramos dos obras, Los celos de Rodamonte y El jardín de Falerina ⸺esta última escrita en colaboración con Antonio Coello y Calderón⸺, que se inspiran en fuentes caballerescas, en particular, de los poemas caballerescos italianos de Boiardo y Ariosto. Se estudian estas dos comedias en relación con sus fuentes y se recogen al final alusiones ocasionales a personajes caballerescas que se encuentran en otras obras de Rojas Zorrilla. This paper analyzes the chivalric matter that appears in the theater of Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla. In his dramatic corpus we find two works, Los celos de Rodamonte and El jardín de Falerina ⸺the latter written in collaboration with Antonio Coello and Calderón de la Barca⸺, which are inspired by chivalric sources, in particular, from the Italian chivalric poems of Boiardo and Ariosto. These two comedies are studied in relation to their sources, and occasional allusions to chivalric characters found in other works by Rojas Zorrilla are collected at the end.Il presente articolo analizza il materiale cavalleresco che compare nel teatro di Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla. Nel suo corpus drammatico troviamo due opere, Los celos de Rodamonte e El jardín de Falerina ⸺quest\u27ultima scritta in collaborazione con Antonio Coello e Calderón⸺, che si ispirano a fonti cavalleresche, in particolare dai poemi cavallereschi italiani di Boiardo e Ariosto. Queste due comedias sono studiate in relazione alle loro fonti, e alla fine sono incluse occasionali allusioni a personaggi cavallereschi presenti in altre opere di Rojas Zorrilla

    “The Effervescence of a Moment”: Hawthorne, Poe, the Penny Press, and the Manifold Temporalities of Antebellum Short Fiction

    This article suggests that the rise of the new journalism of the penny press during the antebellum America constituted an inescapable reference point and challenge for Poe and Hawthorne, for its emergence radically transformed the context and the course of the early phases of their careers and needs to be examined as a fundamental component of their literary visions. To illustrate that, the article focuses on the ways in which the penny press reverberates in Hawthorne’s and Poe’s fictional temporalities. In fact, their works seem to respond to the new regimes of time that were being introduced by the rise of daily newspaper that was booming in the 1830s, forming the framework within which the two writers’ construction of their authorial figures took shape. Centering primarily on the writings of the early phase of their careers, the article retraces the repeated and central appearances that news and the newspaper make in the writings of Hawthorne and Poe, suggesting how their responses to the manifold temporalities in which they were imbricated were key to the development of their different literary conceptions and authorial figures
