Truman Capote’s Mid-Century Subversive Celebrity: A Spectacle of Queerness
Truman Capote is one of the most controversial American writers of the post-WWII years, gaining more attention and fame for his persona than for his literary output. Though his celebrity has lasted for decades and has grown at each new project, this paper concentrates on the years preceding – and the time of – the publication of his first novel in 1948. Portraying explicitly gender-bending characters, Other Voices, Other Rooms has fallen into the category of Southern Grotesque, a style that has sheltered his and other Southern writers’ output from the ostracism met by Gore Vidal’s contemporary gay-themed novel, The City and the Pillar. The paper thus addresses the nexus between sexuality and celebrity at a time when homophobia, in the United States, was at its highest peak. Capote’s exploitation of his personal queerness, mirrored in the novel, has granted him fast-track fame, confirming his ability to capitalize on the spectacularization of queer elements
I sovrani d’Europa in visita a Venezia nel dicembre 1822
Riassunto: Dopo la conclusione del Congresso di Verona l’imperatore d’Austria Francesco I e lo zar di Russia Alessandro visitano Venezia in forma ufficiale, il re di Napoli e il re di Prussia in via privata. L’imperatore trasmette precise istruzioni circa i festeggiamenti, da fare in grande economia. Si fanno un corteo acqueo, un’opera alla Fenice, un ricevimento in Palazzo Reale e altri spettacoli. L’imperatore e la moglie visitano molte istituzioni, lo zar anche, con la guida di Perucchini. Venezia appare ancora bella, ma avvilita e impoverita dai tristi anni della dominazione napoleonica.
Abstract: After the conclusion of the Congress of Verona, the emperor of Austria and the tsar of Russia visit Venice in an official form, the kings of Naples and Prussia privately. The emperor gives precise instructions about the festivities, to be done in strict economy. A pageant of boats is organized, there are an opera at the theatre La Fenice, a reception in the Royal Palace and other events. The emperor and his wife visit many institutions, the tsar too, with the guide of Perucchini. Venice appears still beautiful, but morally and materially impoverished by the sad years of the Napoleon’s domination.

Beziehungskommunikation in der Translation von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur: Selbstübersetzung als Sonderform kultureller Mediation
The translation of children’s and young adult literature shows notable parallels to translation of texts for an adult audience: every act of translation entails modifications of the original linguistic structure and thereby complicates the relational-communicative function of literature. The aim of this paper is to examine to what extent this interpersonal communicative function can be preserved in cases of self-translation. Using Eugene Yelchin’s historical narrative for children and young adults Breaking Stalin’s Nose (2013) as a case study, the analysis explores the strategies the author employs to maintain closeness, authenticity, and cultural connectivity between the source and target texts. Die Übersetzung von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur weist Parallelen zur Translation für ein erwachsenes Lesepublikum auf: So geht eine jede Übersetzung mit Modifikationen der originalen sprachlichen Verfasstheit einher und erschwert dadurch die beziehungskommunikative Funktion von Literatur. Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags ist es zu prüfen, inwieweit in Fällen der Selbstübersetzung die beziehungskommunikative Funktion literarischer Texte aufrechterhalten bleibt. Anhand des historischen Narrativs Breaking Stalin’s Nose von Eugene Yelchin (2013) wird untersucht, welche Strategien der Autor einsetzt, um die Nähe und die Authentizität sowie die kulturelle Anschlussfähigkeit zwischen Ausgangs- und Zieltext zu bewahren
Negating Multilingualism: Anti-mimetic Speech Representation in Terézia Mora’s Seltsame Materie and Alle Tage
Unlike much contemporary literature that ties multilingualism to migration or interculturality, Terézia Mora employs it as a formal and thematic device to express existential alienation. Drawing on key concepts from multilingual literary studies – especially Robert Stockhammer’s taxonomy – the article analyzes multilingualism in Seltsame Materie (1999) and Alle Tage (2004), introducing the new concept of “negating multilingualism”. This term captures both the apparent absence of overt multilingualism in parts of Mora’s work and its alienating role within the narrative structure, thus expanding the scholarship on literary multilingualism and its analytical categories.A differenza di gran parte della letteratura contemporanea che collega il plurilinguismo alla migrazione o all’interculturalità, Terézia Mora lo impiega come dispositivo formale e tematico per esprimere l’alienazione dei suoi personaggi. Partendo da concetti chiave degli studi sulla letteratura plurilingue – in particolare dalla tassonomia di Robert Stockhammer – il contributo analizza il plurilinguismo nelle opere Seltsame Materie (1999) e Alle Tage (2004), introducendo il nuovo concetto di “negating multilinguism” (plurilinguismo negante/negato). Nella sua ambivalenza questo termine cattura sia l’apparente assenza di plurilinguismo in alcune parti dell’opera di Mora, sia il ruolo di fattore di esclusione e alienazione che ricopre nella struttura narrativa, andando ad ampliare le attuali categorie analitiche del plurilinguismo letterario

Abstract: Nautical motifs are key elements in understanding Dickinson’s poetic world view, which suggests that humans are inferior to nature. This paper offers close-readings of Dickinson’s poetry under the three topics of longing, death, and navigation to come up with the conclusion that water is the eternal realm of yearning and trust – even though humans as creatures of land are destined to fail. This paper uses an ecofeminist approach to suggest that navigating through sea is a metaphor to satisfy inner longing.
Riassunto: I motivi nautici sono elementi chiave nella comprensione della visione del mondo poetico di Emily Dickinson, che suggerisce che gli umani sono inferiori alla natura. L’articolo si propone di offrire un’analisi della poesia di Emily Dickinson secondo le tre tematiche del desiderio, della morte e della navigazione per arrivare alla conclusione che l’acqua è il regno eterno dello struggimento e della fiducia – anche se gli uomini come creature terrestri sono destinati a fallire. La prospettiva ecofemminista dell’analisi conduce a considerare che la navigazione attraverso il mare è una metafora per soddisfare il desiderio interiore.

Il Romanticismo serbo e il mare
Riassunto: Il romanticismo serbo, seppur più tardo rispetto al romanticismo europeo, condivide con quest’ultimo le sue principali caratteristiche che si riflettono sia nei generi che nelle idee. Lo stesso vale per il motivo del mare, nonostante la Serbia ottocentesca (come pure l’odierna) non avesse uno sbocco sul Mar Adriatico. Anzi, era impegnata nelle lotte per l’indipendenza dagli Ottomani, lotte che si iscrivono bene nel contesto dei risvegli nazionali ottocenteschi. Questa costante memoria patriottica, insieme alla tradizione popolare e ai maestri del romanticismo europeo, sarà il faro in mare aperto dei romantici serbi i quali, seppur non cresciuti sul mare, sapranno cantarlo o evocarlo a modo loro. In questo lavoro saranno presentati i principali tratti del romanticismo serbo e sarà analizzata la presenza del mare in alcune opere dei romantici serbi più famosi: Branko Radičević, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, Đura Jakšić e Laza Kostić.
Abstract: Serbian Romanticism, although later than European Romanticism, shares with it the main characteristics which are reflected in genres and ideas. This is also true for the motif of the sea, despite the fact that nineteenth-century Serbia (as the actual one) did not have an outlet on the Adriatic Sea. Indeed, Serbia was engaged in those struggles for independence from the Ottomans that fit well in the context of the nineteenth-century national awakenings. This constant patriotic memory, together with the popular tradition and the masters of European Romanticism, will be the lighthouse in the open sea of the Serbian romantics who, although not grown up on the seaside, will be able to sing it or evoke it in their own way. In this work the main features of Serbian Romanticism will be presented and the presence of the sea will be analysed in some works of the most famous Serbian romantics: Branko Radičević, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, Đura Jakšić and Laza Kostić.
