Enhancing NASA\u27s Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator Using Highly Efficient Thermoelectric Materials
This project proposal aims to enhance NASA’s Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) by identifying and analyzing new material technologies that have been researched for their excellent thermoelectric properties at higher temperatures. By choosing the most efficient thermoelectric material available, the MMRTG’s energy conversion efficiency will be greatly improved as thermoelectric generator efficiencies are largely determined by the properties of the materials within the thermocouple devices used to convert the heat into energy. A project that focuses on enhancing the MMRTG is imperative for the future of space exploration as there is global shortage of plutonium fuel production, limiting future missions to available supplies. A more efficient generator will minimize the use of this fuel while maximizing power output, allowing for increased mission capabilities and better conservation of the scarce plutonium fuel. In this report, lanthanum telluride, Yb14MnSb14, and a multiple-filled skutterudite (SKD) compound are analyzed for their excellent thermoelectric performance. The multiple filled SKD compound is chosen as the ideal material to enhance the MMRTG based on the low cost and low risks associated with the material while producing a nearly identical efficiency relative to the other candidates. Language Imperialism in French Algeria
As the post World War II period saw the rapid dismantling of Europe’s colonial empires, few nations clung to their overseas territories with as much zeal as France. Immediately off the heels of its failure to maintain control in Indochina, and facing national shame and embarrassment for military shortcomings there, France launched into a second full-scale war to hold one of its most valued colonies, Algeria. A French territory for over 100 years, Algeria faced unparalleled efforts to alter its society and subject its people to French rule. Attempting to subvert the existing culture in Algeria, the French saw language as a primary target in the battle for cultural dominance. Systematic efforts were made by French authorities to restrict and limit indigenous tongues, such as Arabic and Berber, and impose the French language as a means to subvert and supplant existing Algerian culture with that of metropolitan France. An examination of Algeria’s colonial history, its special status within the greater French imperial system, French attitudes regarding their society and culture, as well as the perspectives of Algerian’s opposed to French rule, provides a greater context that can simply be described as a policy of cultural domination
An Exploration of the Nascent AI Race Dynamics Between the United States and China
This study examines the ongoing competition between China and the United States (US) within the field of artificial intelligence (AI) development and implementation. It further inspects this competition as a potential site of a developing security dilemma between the two states. While the academic literature surrounding the politics of AI focuses primarily upon the military and economic applications of AI, very few have examined it as a site of great power competition between China and the US. Relying upon a content analysis of speeches, governmental policy, and think tank reports, this study aims to inspect three primary elements of AI competition: military applications, economic applications, and its ethical or regulatory consequences. Upon close examination, this study finds that Sino-US competition over AI does not presently constitute a security dilemma, however the nascency of the field and the likelihood of a near-term offensive advantage suggest that one may still be likely to emerge
