Nesting success of Sharpe’s Longclaw (Macronyx sharpei Jackson, 1904) around the grasslands of lake Ol’bolossat Nyandarua, Kenya
Sharpe’s Longclaw Macronyx sharpei is an endangered Kenyan endemic bird restricted to high-alttude grasslands with long
tussocks. The species occurs on the grasslands surrounding Lake Ol’Bolossat in Nyandarua, Kenya, an area that is globally recognized
as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. The grasslands receive litle conservaton measures, which have led to the decline in the
populaton density of Sharpe’s Longclaw. Nestng success in birds is crucial for their populaton growth. The daily survival rate for natural
nests of Sharpe’s Longclaw in the grasslands of Lake Ol’Bolossat had not been systematcally assessed prior to this study. Natural nests
were actvely searched during the breeding seasons of March–May 2016, while artfcial nests were constructed using dry grass containing
artfcial eggs made of cream modeling clay. Natural nests had a higher daily nest survival percentage than artfcial nests. The highest
daily nest survival rate was 40% and the lowest 0.01%. Predators, livestock grazing and fres greatly reduced the survival of nestlings. We
recommend intensive ecological management of the high-alttude grasslands of Lake Ol’Bolossat
Compensation
Relating to human resource function, compensation (often referred to as pay, wage, salary) is the monetary and non-monetary reward offered to an employee in exchange of their contribution to labour. The contributions can be their time, knowledge, skills, abilities and commitment to an organization or certain temporal work. Whereas people traditionally work to get paid, people are increasingly considering non-monetary benefits that ensure stability in the long run e.g. having health care plan, long-term disability protection, and retirement plans (See figure 1). This has led human resource managers to come up with attractive compensation packages for different employees they recruit. Human resource total compensation remains the largest expense for many organizations hence having a good compensation plan helps to strike a balance between employee satisfaction and maintaining overall human resource strategy of minimizing costs
Bleisure typologies
The origin of tourism dates back to the end of the 18th century when the western tradition organized travels to support infrastructure and sight-seeing in the cities of ancient Greece and Rome. In the 21st century modern tourism has taken a different shape being an intensive commercially organized with a business – oriented activities. The shift of the tourism from the pre-industrial view to modern view has resulted to development of new concepts and new typologies of tourists. The grand tours by the young nobles between the 16th and 18th century was a precursor to the modern bleisure tourism since it involved those in corporate status taking leisure through travels. The change of the overall lifestyle from a non- working society to a working society has come along with new life adaptation skills to the changing times. The increase in demand to work and the resulting reduction in the free time has led to development of new terms in the tourism including ‘bleisure’ This definition will guide future scholars who wis
A systematic literature review on security indicators for open-source enterprise resource planning software
Open-source enterprise resource planning (ERP) software has become a preferred alternative for modern organizations due to its affordable cost, availability and ease of access. Open-source software allows access to customizable code which in most instances may have security loop holes due to the nature of its releases. The study is motivated by need for accountability and security assurance by stakeholders and the need for justification of investments towards information security. The objective was to analyse security indicators for open-source resource planning software. Papers and journals published between 2017 and 2021 from IEEE, ACM, Springer, arXiv, Wiley online library and EBSCO were reviewed. Out of the publications generated through the Google search, 62 publications were selected by reading the title, abstract, introduction and full text. Results indicate un-updated software, full access rights, inadequate training, failure to comply, single authentication and unauthorized software as some of the factors that indicate open-source enterprise resource planning software security. In conclusion effectiveness of mitigation measures to address these factors shows security or insecurity. Notably, there is need to institute security control measures and metrics for the identified factors to help assess security posture of enterprises during ERP software implementation. We recommend the design of security a measurement framework and definition of a metrics suite for assessing open-source ERP software security
Science Self-Efficacy and Career Decision Making: A Study Among Secondary Students in Murang’a County, Kenya
Self-confidence in science enhances the pursuance of science-related fields. Low self-belief in students’ ability to perform in science subjects has been cited as a factor that has led to declined examination grades. Consequently, impeding admission of students in Murang’a County, into career courses that require science subjects. This study embarked on investigating students’ selfefficacy in science and career decisiveness among students in secondary schools in Murang’a County Kenya. The study explored the cognitive domain of the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). Correlations were established between the variables. A sample population of 498 form three students in public schools was derived by Cochran’s sample size formula. The sample included boys, girls, and coeducational schools, selected using purposive and proportionate sampling. The science self-efficacy scale and career decision scale (CDS) were utilized to collect data. Inferential data was analyzed by SPSS determining associations between the variables. Positive relationships were realized between low science self-efficacy and Career decision making. High science self-efficacy had a negative correlation with students’ ability to decide on a career option. The findings suggest the significance of science self-efficacy in stimulating students’ decisions in science
Stakeholders’ Role in the Adoption of Green Practices among Star Rated Hotels along Coastal Kenya: Partnerships and Collaborations
The hospitality and tourism industry is one of the key economic sectors expected to take a leadership role in transforming the emerging green economy. Climate change impacts on ecological sustainability alongside considerable growth in the industry have raised critical concerns through increased emission of greenhouse gases, water, and energy consumption, and vast volumes of food waste. A rapid move from carbon and material-intensive ways of delivering visitor experiences with an emphasis on stakeholder involvement and ecosystem wellbeing makes tourism a leader in transforming the emerging green economy. This paper aims to determine the role of stakeholder engagement in the adoption of green practices by star-rated hotels along the Kenyan Coast. A cross-sectional survey design was applied in this study. Sample hotels for the study were identified using stratified random selection. Stratification of management tiers for selecting general managers and heads of sections was applied. Data from heads of sections were obtained using a semi-structured questionnaire while semi-structured interview schedule was used for general managers. Analysis of data included descriptive statistics in determining the frequencies, means, standard deviations, and percentages for each survey item. One sample t-test was used to test the statistical significance of Likert scale responses. Hypothesis testing was conducted using a multiple linear regression model. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that stakeholders’ engagement contributes significantly to the adoption of green practices (p=≤0.000≤0.05). Stakeholder’ engagement was also revealed as a key predictor of adoption of green practices in star rated hotels (β= .760, P - value<0.05). The study concluded that stakeholders’ engagement provide new ideas, define performance indicators for monitoring, auditing, comparison, and reporting green practices adopted by the star-rated hotels. The study recommended that hotel managers, hotel associations, and government agencies need to enhance green practices by strengthening the capacity of existing institutions to partner and collaborate with key stakeholders, mobilize green climate funds, develop and review curricula, training resources, and short courses in hospitality, tourism, and environmental studies
