Compelled Mysteriously 
I am led by something felt
on the wind, something unseen in the stars.
Silver jewels hang so close they almost
drop in my boat – yet they
remain out of reach.
Why do I row toward Hawaii?
I am driven by secrets
in the salt breeze, mysteries
glinting on the waves.
My grandfather never came to Kauai
yet his wandering ways
run deep in my blood. Like him
I sail west toward the golden sunset
coming closer to a far-away dream. 
Ahead looms the volcanic mountain
where Goddess Pele of fire and passion
lives in her burning home.
I stare until I become
part of the mist-entrapped mountain.
Something pulls me…
something written on the wind,
something moving
under the silk scrolls of the ocean.

A Garden Party on Friday
Mid-afternoon, the sun yet to fall 
over the ridge of trees that kept 
the sanctuary safe from street 
sounds and industry. Bejeweled 
and properly hatted, the ladies 
arrived, placed like the stone 
cherubs they came to admire. 
Block wood framed an oversized 
swing reminiscent of the metal 
structure from an old neighborhood 
park. Not aged by years, her face, 
was that of joy and wonder as she
trapezed over freshly mown grass 
and summer blooms.
I teared a bit for one muse.
Her corner, with babes and winsome blooms. 
I recall in detail her flamboyance and thirst 
for an uncommon life. 
St. Francis tucked in tree bark.
Droplets stepping from pebble to pebble.
Pocket shrines for the sick and lonely. 
Every affliction prayed for and honored. 
Late afternoon, the sun to fall past 
tree lines guarding this refuge, 
the ladies prayed. 
They prayed for the past.
They prayed for the future. 
They drank wine and buttered bread.
And, while the world spun around them,
they were saved in the garden on Friday.

Colophon
Twice a year, College of DuPage invites all COD students, faculty and staff, 
as well as the entirety of District 502 to submit original literature and 
artwork for publication in the community liberal arts journal, the Prairie 
Light Review. This year Prairie Light Review accepted works of original 
fiction, nonfiction, essays, drama, poetry, graphic essays, photography, 
and 2D or 3D artwork of any medium to be considered for publication. 
Students enrolled in English 2210 worked as student editors to read 
and evaluate all submissions through a fair and anonymous system of 
evaluation. The class was guided by our faculty advisor, Adam Fotos, who 
oversees class proceedings, leads hiring decisions of class officers, and 
advises on creative and technical decisions of all varieties. 
Throughout the semester, our officers- Editor in Chief, Production Editor, 
and Marketing Editor- serve pertinent roles in ensuring the quality of 
our publication. Our Marketing Editor manages all of our social media 
and community connections, ensuring that the public is aware of the 
opportunities available to them, and the details of upcoming events. 
The Production Editor creates the overall design of the journal, deciding 
formatting, color scheme, piece placement, and other technical decisions. 
The Editor in Chief supervises all operations of the team, makes executive 
decisions on submissions, and advises Assistant Editors in their work. 
Final edits are approved by our entire team before the finished publication 
is sent to the printers.

The People’s Resource Center addresses both food insecurity and poverty. The PRC has a long history of serving those in need since 1975. They have a multitude of programs including a food pantry and a clothes pantry. It is through our services that those experiencing food insecurity and poverty can get their necessities, even without having as much money.

Other Efforts
Even though we have made progress in decreasing the 
overall food insecurity rate, the amount of people under 25 
living below poverty has been gradually increasing.

Background Information
• The People’s Resource Center was founded in 
1975.
• Founded by Dorothy McIntyre, Father Tom 
Peyton, and others.
• Wanted to overcome poverty in the suburbs.
• Started as a small house in Wheaton, IL.
• Shared food with 125 local families in the first 
year.
• One of the largest food pantries in suburbs.
• Helps about 30,000 low income DuPage County 
residents (About PRC).
History
Over the years the People’s Resource Center has 
introduced several programs to help overcome the 
effects of poverty. These programs include:
• 1975 - Wheaton food pantry
• 1985 – DuPage P.A.D.S sheltering program
• 1988 – DuPage Community Health Clinic (now 
independent)
• 1996 – Dental Clinic
• 1997 – Computer access and training program
• 1997 – Literacy classes for GED and citizenship 
tests
• 1997 – Art Program
• 2006 – Jobs program
• 2008 – Second location in Southeast DuPage
• 2015 – Westmont location to better provide 
services to Southeast DuPage (PRC History).
Food Insecurity
• 62,420 people in DuPage County experienced 
food insecurity in 2017.
• This represents only 6.7% of the population of 
DuPage County (Map the Meal Gap).

DuPage County. It is through our services that the 
percentage of people that experience food insecurity is 
decreasing (Food Insecurity Rate).

The Prairie Light Review is the liberal arts journal of the College of 
DuPage. This biannual journal seeks to showcase the diverse work 
produced by creative individuals surrounding us. Our publication 
exists entirely because of our loyal community, as we only accept 
submissions from District 502 and rely on our team of student 
editors to edit, format, and produce the literary journal. Each piece 
submitted is evaluated anonymously in order to ensure objectivity.

Scholarship Info
The Budilovsky Literary Scholarship provides one $500 award per 
semester in conjunction with being published in the College of 
DuPage’s Prairie Light Review. To be considered for this award, the 
entrant must remain a student at COD the following semester and 
have written a quality piece of any type (i.e., essay, poem, short story, 
etc.). Preference will be made to pieces that are autobiographical in 
nature.
