Keynote Presentation: Jackie Weaver, Associate Professor of Art

Void is a proposed exhibition that collects modern and contemporary artworks that surround the idea of being nothing and something at the same time. It is full of pieces of art that are paradoxes, unorthodox in their creation or being, who at first glance may look like they have nothing to say, but at the same time, are saying everything. They are filled to the brim with unknowns, dark corners, empty spaces; places where you, as the viewer, are allowed and encouraged to step in, to fill in that silence, and occupy that space yourself.

but tangible? How do you speak about nothing? 
When is the moment nothing becomes something; 
becomes everything? These described are moments of 
becoming, when something takes itself up -
and becomes something else.

What is nothing when it is something?
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
Void is a proposed exhibition that was created for 
Modern and Contemporary Art, where we were to 
create an exhibition based around a theme and 
collect modern works that contributed towards our 
chosen theme.
● Art that subverts the modern popular ideas of 
what art is usually expected to be: 
consumable, classically aesthetically “pretty”, 
and most importantly, easily understandable 
and approachable.
The exhibition would serve as a place made for questioning, 
for looking and paying attention to the actions made in the creation 
of each piece, the focus on meaning, and especially on what cannot 
be found in the collected works, where artists did not follow 
expectation.

This is when we search for
color to transform cold grey.
Rainfall begins its magic 
high lighting sky blue.
We see stacks of luminous clouds
as plants pop out and forsythia 
bursts into sparkling yellow stalks.
Just today a breath of warmth
brought alive crepe myrtle buds.
Aromatic lilac bushes cluster in
soft bunches while birds and bugs
encircle them.  Ten pretty trees
all dressed up in lustrous greens
boogie through noontime breezes.
Get ready for this blast-off of spring!

                The Moon                                                                                            Ethan Kagin
The moon stands tall with beauty
Casting her lunar beams
She breaks the midnight air,
Whispers to the stars
She leaves her waxing task and casts her tranquil stare upon the pond
Shimmering bright, her beauty wanes
The stars are comforted by a friend in the dark
Her pearly beams of light dance in owl’s eyes
The silver shadow of the moon walks in peace
In her shoon upon the water,
Walks the moon
In a thousand breaking lights the moon’s reflection grows slowly bright
In early midnight’s, milky light

You can call me Rebekah Elizabeth Malbach. 
Records destroyed. 
Remember my name.
Day 1826, Inescapable captivity, 
torture, experimentation, 
hard labor, forced
sterilization, rape
Whispers of liberation always wafting through the air, teasing my ears. 
Sixth straight day
no food no water no matter.
With a dried tongue
I lick my palm, smooth my hair. Forgive my appearance and my dress, 
rather, undress.
Expected tears. Shame, 
in and out of reach, trickles through my bony fingers.
Roll Call.
Time for a long-awaited 
shower before the Liberators arrive. I can 
finally drink.
Escorted to the Woodshed, 
my hop-drag-hop-drag tempo angered Guard Müller. 
My hip is out of joint.
A jab to my back. 
I stumble.
All in. A longer than normal creak, 
a glance toward the door, 
Guard Müller’s tilted head, 
piercing blue eyes haunt.
Slam, lock.
Vapors dispersing. No water. 
Coughs, screams, cries, 
prayers, songs, hugs
Overcome.
Lips tightly pursed, short breaths in, short breaths out.

The Liberators arrive. Too late for many.
Bodies stacked outside the Woodshed, 
limbs facing every direction.
Rigor mortis sets in
Organic, human sculpture for the world to witness.
The Liberators force Camp guards to detangle the sculpture and inhume 
bodies in mass grave.
Too many bodies. Bulldozer needed
before guests arrive.
Weimar villagers with effervescent strides
enter the Camp gates. 
Suum Cuique.
Greeted with lampshades of skin
                 shrunken heads
portraits of high-ranking guards’ wives
                        on skinned canvases.
Stench of death, skeletal remains resting on fire pit, 
human sculptures.
Fainting spells, gasps, stone faces, 
head-shaking disbelief,
Smiles.
To alleviate their distress, they were invited into 
the Woodshed.
Guard Müller and I meet again. Guard Schmidt joins her. 
Schmidt grabs both legs. 
Müller oddly grabs one arm, turning her head left and right, refusing to see 
me.
My contorted body not carried but dragged. Face down, 
right arm above my head clawing the earth.
My nose and mouth shovel and inhale dirt, 
my head rises and falls over
uneven, 
hastily prepared mounds.
We arrive at the open pit,
With a slight lift and effortless swing, my naked body prepares for its 
mouth.
Thrown over the edge, right arm trying to grab anything it could.
Hard landing on pile, 
lime spread over me.

Privilege as in he can love with the mask off.
Whereas the ‘coach’ demands that I keep mine on  
like a uniform,  
to keep up appearances.
Maybe that is why I only love men in masks.
They know the lonely that comes with the facade,
but who knows what really lies beneath?
In the shadows they could be anyone or anything,
safe in the dark to love  
without fear of losing.
