Second Generation South Asian Female Immigrants and Colorism in American Society
This presentation evolved from a literature review that assessed current knowledge on colorism in India and the United States for South Asians. Cultural identity, the marketing methods of skin-lightening products, and the sociological implications of “fairness” in women were explored to suggest future research for second-generation immigrants in the South Asian community. This paper was written in hopes that it would instigate a study done on community college students where South Asian American females could be tested on how their cultural identity, ascribing beauty standards, and the world around them influences their self-concept. The true goal of exploring this phenomenon is to help everyone understand themselves and each other in a diverse world.
