Ode to Time
Sarah “Sadie” 
Dalla Costa
Folded into the mold of the earth 
Encases time passed and time forgotten, 
In a treasure chest filled with golden worth, 
In a trunk spilling with secrets of men, 
Burying underneath the modern world 
As a journal, a rock wearied to sand 
In where vermilion stains and stars combine 
Securing a note furled – 
Spluttered on one corner: Franz Ferdinand, 
And another: Massacre, Columbine. 
  
But maybe in this allegory cave, 
We see the shadows which were seen before, 
So sure that these events came from one wave 
Streaming back to the waters once borne, 
Drinking that on Vasco da Gama sailed, 
Sparkling cave gems now our hands never first find, 
But those that century’s ancestors reveal, 
Past to the present old news trailed 
Raised up to gods as if they’re star-signed; 
Gods yawn like, ‘Saw same from Neanderthal.’ 
  
O time! Wearisome everlasting fate! 
From wilting flowers, you bequeath the land 
To sprouting seeds who bicker and debate! 
With no reason you to us tripped and panned 
Time: our most prominent antagonist, 
Causing us to cower in constant fear, 
But also our greatest healer: 
On our tear-stained cheeks, hope you have kissed; 
Caroling a hymn of remembrance 
As we stare at history’s mirror 
Into our own eyes.

Th e Premature Sap
Tricia Marcella Cimera
Yes, he was young 
 but not inexperienced. 
He’d done this before 
 to much great acclaim. 
Timing it perfectly, 
 to the exact moment, 
causing such sighs, 
 such rapturous cries 
with his performance! 
 Th en this girl blew in, 
skirt blowing up, 
 up in the wind, 
apple-cheeked cheeky, 
 curves round as pumpkins, 
eyes fl ashing heat 
 like bonfi re sparks. 
One glimpse of her, 
 he fell, what a fall, 
trembling and shaking, 
 bending  near breaking, 
he        PEAKED! 
 But too soon. 
Now there he stands, 
 bright blushing red, 
golden head boughed, 
 beside all the others 
swaying tall, in control. 
 He, the fi rst tree 
to burst  with excitement 
 and color 
before Autumn herself 
 fully came.

The stars disappear in blinding light of day. 
Still they shine. 
  
Stars seem invisible. 
They never really go away. 
  
Moon flees from the harsh sun of noon. 
Somewhere, the moon is alive. 
Where does the moon hide? 
We will see it soon. 
  
Shadow and mist blow to a far land. 
Clouds travel far but they return. 
Shades of the elm tree shelter us again 
like a strange, benevolent hand. 
  
We are never totally abandoned. 
We are always watched by someone. 
We are always under something. 
  
We are never fully parted 
from those we love.
Fingers stinging, brow dripping, 
soul singing, notes ripping, 
every word a story about you. 
  
Decipher this code to thoughts swirling like a toilet bowl. 
Nothin’ like you’ve ever heard before. 
  
My turn to speak, so listen here 
this ain’t no lie, and it ain’t no truth, 
but, Baby, ain’t no one hurts like you. 
  
Believe this soul as you hear the melody, 
groove with that smooth clash 
and let the beat fill you. 
  
Eat your deceit and feed your frustration. 
Baby, it’s what you’re best at, 
Just leave me to my music, 
And I leave you to your hate.

Conflict 
Is it courage, then 
To use glass as my cannon fodder 
To use that fragile, see-through pretense of confidence 
Mimicking styles of war I’ve seen used with such ease by ally and enemy 
For whom such interactions come as naturally as breathing 
Mimicking, firing off empty charges that set the ground trembling 
And leading my thunderous, thoughtless armies 
Marching forth into hostile territory— 
A social interaction— 
Destroying the ultimate adversary, my own self? 
Is it bravery to conquer fear and foe 
By means of force, of blast and blade 
To shatter my own silence? 
The price I pay, the blood, sweat and tears shed to do so 
And the cost I see, the solid, jagged fragments of things once stoic and strong 
Choke back the drive and I pause, poised in the face of that after-battle quiet 
Suddenly at a doubt as to whether it need be destroyed after all, 
If the world needs more empires and more empires destroyed 
If mercy is so weak and obsolete in the face of a new world 
Of conquering and constructing. 
I question whether it is valiance to attempt to exchange 
The artillery of words, 
To partake in that cordial warfare 
Though battered by the simplest reply, 
As I know I have no real place among these experts 
And so I allow them to destroy me out of common habit. 
I wonder whether it is with boldness that I plan each formal battle 
Poring for long minutes over the curled maps, 
Weighing every word on a set of balances, 
Then go out and face my opponents, moving deeper, 
But with less care, 
Until I come off as one of these hollow giants 
These masters of war and artists of our natural world 
Providing both the backdrop of small talk, 
Subdued shades of gray and murmured nothings out of focus, 
And the centerpieces of introspection and philosophy, 
Those brilliant tales to mark and mar our history, 
With which I cannot and have no wish to compare. 
I am speechless   
Or simply without mind for speech 
But when in Rome, one must fight like the gladiators-- 
And yet I feel my armies 
Have swelled in number and shriveled in worth.

Is it cowardice, then 
To fly a flag I do not believe in 
And break from isolation into the pretense of a superpower 
I never meant to become, 
To be swept up in that war fever, 
Or to keep my silence and be left behind in sweet but invisible peace, 
Never to fly a flag at all? 
War is not, after all, a spectator sport 
And though unfit, I have no choice 
Except to play and be without meaning 
Or to sink into the battlefield, 
Silence being among the first casualties of this war, 
To go down with my ship and be without purpose.

Rome 
 
I want to see Rome. 
Long to experience its beauty and magic. 
I want to go on a random adventure 
no cares except exploring the world around me. 
I want to really fall in love for the first time, 
this time with someone who won't break my heart. 
I want to be truly happy, 
even just for a moment. 
There are a few things on my bucket list. 
Not very many, but things I've long dreamed to see and feel. 
I want adventure, 
I want to find true love, 
I want to be happy, 
I want to see Rome.

Do you hear voices in your head? 
And I don't mean insanity  
There was just something they said
