Interactive online learning modules are coupled with guided studies 
that students complete for targeted note taking.  Review questions are 
also embedded to give students practice before graded assessments.

knowledge in 
the lab.
Students teach 
peers skills 
learned from 
the videos.  
While working 
on problems,

lead the team 
when their skill 
is required. Students work through application problems using new knowledge and skills to complete tasks “real world” geologists must.  Students 
also bring case studies to expand our work into the world.
Following the start of the
2016-17 school year when
OER development ended,
students are averaging a
93.32% success rate.

Hello Dear Reader, 
This collection has been through a lot to arrive in your hands. Against all odds and setbacks, 
he has made it! Through our vigorous discussion on pieces, through the deadline extension, 
through fights and tears and anxiety, he has made it; he is beautiful. I hope you agree, lovely 
reader. Reader, you are the first person I want to thank. Without you, I fear this journal 
would fall into an existential crisis. I would hate to see eighty-some pages question their 
point of existing. So, thank you for perusing these wonderful stories and art. Hopefully, you 
find something you like. 
Staff, it hasn’t been easy. Now that it’s over, however, there is nothing we could have done to 
create something better. All those hard moments have shaped us just as they have shaped the 
journal. Thank you for your time, your opinions, and your love for PLR. 
Trina, we literally wouldn’t be here without you. You have fought for this club again and

When a Tree Falls
If I were not walking through this oak wood at dawn
would the redwing blackbird sing the sun up over the horizon 
with such resolute faith in its own daily capability?
Would that patch of lavender pansies
nod their broad cheeky faces at each other
with a feisty delight in their mutual beauty?
Perhaps this tall lilac bush would yet flaunt
its perfumed purple tresses above my reach,
attesting the same indisputable poise.
But would the creek still blather about its path
before spilling over that hill of boulders
with as much froth and fervor?
I suppose those wild geese might even gather
to protect their gaggle of feeding young
against the possible intrusion of someone like me
but how could the lake possibly shimmer
as blinding a reflection of morning sun
were I not, this minute, squinting in its direction?

dander
particles airborne like
pollen, soot, skin cells
fibers of fabric
the fluff of feathers
fine matters of earth brought in
by wind, windows, and doors
clouds billowing in from the outside
specks from a storm or smoke from the ashes
ancestors disintegrating under the tomb
contaminants crumbling from the ceiling
soil from our shoes as we walk
insects inching on sleeping bodies
sands from the Sahara creating dry plumes

If the moon is a drowned woman’s face
Sinking slowly beneath the black waters of the night,
Then slowly surfacing the next month,
Only to sink again, and rise, and sink,
Her breath bubbles flickering like the stars
Who say nothing though the astronomical voyeur
Peeps through his telescope and mocks
The shadows and lines, seas and highlands,
Of her face, declares he can see a man
In the near side of the moon, is it so strange
She hides her dark side from the earth?

I enter with a guitar on my back and not even two nickels in my pocket
I open the first door, I feel like sticking my hand in a socket
So many ways to escape the pain
I stayed there until I managed to escape my brain’s chain
I pick my next door with care
Next thing I know, I can’t go into public without a stare!
My guitar is my business
So busy I never made it home for Christmas
Between the next few doors I fly internationally
Until I started to think irrationally
I wanted to go on another kind of trip
So in the next room I put a piece of paper under my lip
The walls disappeared and time was gone
I had finally experienced the beauty of dawn
One last time
I saw the world so sublime
Before I open the last door
And fell into a hole below the floor.
