The Environmental Crisis and Art: Thoughtlessness, Responsibility, and Imagination
No full textClimate change is a defining issue of our time for which the immediate as well as potential future scope causes enormous impediments to human understanding and comprehension. It is argued here that humans ought to make wise use of their capacity of thinking, language, and communication in working on the task of responsible action. Required is nothing less than moving out of “thoughtlessness”, an unresponsiveness and ignorance in particular towards certain environmental problems. As human beings, we are a species on this planet that is uniquely capable to think and foresee potential consequences and hold power to induce change on our actions. It is up to human beings to confront challenges such as climate change, to consider what has been critically assessed in thought and reflect on potential responses. Crucial in this dialog is the ability to take the standpoint of the other –– including that of species as well as ecosystems –– in human imagination. It also means to develop a sensibility for the other in making sense of the world that today is largely shaped by humans. Throughout history, narratives, stories, images, artistic expressions have all played a key role for imaginative ventures that allow the mind to imagine the past, present, and the future. Language and communication can serve comprehension of an issue like climate change and provide a path in developing responsible responses to abstract problems of complex global future dimensions
Aspekte der Psychoanalyse und der Subjektivität in Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’
No full textDer vorliegende Artikel untersucht zwei Frauenfiguren aus der Erzählung ‘Sonja’ der Autorin Judith Hermann, die über ihr Sprechen Einblicke in die Verfasstheit ihres sprachanalog organisierten Unbewussten ermöglichen. Dabei deutet das volle Sprechen der Figur Verena auf eine erfolgreiche Subjektwerdung; das Sprechen der Figur Sonja hingegen auf eine erfolglose, die die Figur jedoch mehrmals mithilfe des namenlosen Ich-Erzählers nachzuholen versucht. Diese Versuche bleiben insgesamt erfolglos und Sonja verschwindet aus dem Leben des Erzählers, der für sie nicht mehr nutzbringend ist. Mithilfe der Arbeiten des Psychoanalytikers Jaques Lacan und des Ethnologen Claude Lévi-Strauss arbeitet der Artikel heraus, dass die Verwendung von Sprache in Hermanns Erzählung ein sprachanalog organisiertes Unbewusstes der Figuren impliziert. Weiterhin spielt Sprache durch diese Organisationsform der Figurenpsyche eine zentrale Rolle in der Konstitution der Figurenidentität. Nach Lacan besteht die menschliche Gesellschaft aus Strukturpositionen, an denen die einzelnen Subjekte zueinander in Beziehung treten, und die den Signifikanten und ihren Beziehungen untereinander ähneln, wie Ferdinand Saussure sie fasst. Die einzelnen Subjekte sind nach ihrer Strukturposition, nicht nach ihren Eigenschaften definiert. Diese Positionierung in dieser Struktur der menschlichen Gesellschaft und somit die Subjektwerdung findet in der Kindheit durch den Übergang aus dem Imaginären in die symbolische Ordnung statt. Wer nicht aus dem Stadium des Lacan’schen Imaginären in das des Symbolischen übertritt und seinen Platz in der Struktur findet kann keine Subjektivität herausbilden. Dies spiegelt sich auf der Oberflächenebene wider: Die subjektlose Figur der Hermann‘schen Erzählung Sonja kann in keine Beziehung zu dem Ich-Erzähler treten, sie bildet keine Identität aus, bleibt dem Gegenüber un(be)greifbar

Get PDFThis article investigates affinities in George Eliot’s “Felix Holt: the Radical” and Theodor Fontane’s “Frau Jenny Treibel.” Both texts present suggestive narratological and thematic affinities in how the 19th-century female identity is articulated within the socio-political framework of society novels. This analysis interrogates the boundaries of a ‘sentimental education’ to uncover deeper layers distinguishing Bildung from Herzensbildung, thereby placing greater emphasis on women’s romantic education in the public performance of identity.

Get PDFDeutsch ist offizielle Amtssprache mehrerer europäischer Länder und Regionen. Doch selbstredend sprechen im amtlich deutschsprachigen Raum nicht alle Menschen genau gleich. Sprachliche Vielfalt findet sich aber nicht nur auf der Ebene von Dialekt und Regiolekt. Varietäten und Varianten zeigt sich auch in der mündlichen und schriftlichen Standardsprache – also in derjenigen Sprachform, um die es im Deutschunterricht ja üblicherweise geht.
Wie lässt sich die Diversität des Standard- bzw. Hochdeutschen im DACH-Raum linguistisch beschreiben und erklären? Hört man, ob jemand aus Deutschland, Österreich oder aus der Deutschschweiz kommt – auch dann, wenn der/die Sprecher/in auf einem schriftlichen Text basiert und bewusst langsam und deutlich spricht, wie es z. B. in Lehrbuch- oder Prüfungsdialogen oft der Fall ist? Und was bedeutet die variationslinguistische Vielfalt der deutschen Sprache grundsätzlich für das Lehren und Lernen von Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF)?
Bisher scheint die Fachwissenschaft die Unterrichtspraxis mit dieser Frage eher allein zu lassen. Auf theoretischen Grundlagen aus der Variationslinguistik ebenso wie auf empirischen Daten aus einem Online-Quiz basierend, befasst sich der vorliegende Beitrag mit einem regionaler und nationaler Variation im Deutschen – und damit mit einem Thema, das in einem komplexen Spannungsfeld zwischen Linguistik und Didaktik, Norm(en) und Fehler, Regeln und Ausnahmen, Sprache und Kultur, Identität und Nationalität oszilliert, was es für DaF sprach(en)politisch, ausund weiterbildungsbezogen, methodisch-didaktisch ebenso wie unterrichtspraktisch potentiell relevant macht
Art History Cannon Project
No full textMy project seeks to explore lesbian representation throughout three distinct periods of art history: 1300-1600 CE, 1600-1850 CE, and 1850-Present. I analyze three artworks, one from each era, in terms of both its formal qualities and its context within a larger lesbian history. These artworks include Gabrielle d\u27Estrees and one of her sisters (1594), The Sleepers (1866), and Brooklyn and Regina, Brooklyn, NY (1979). Each individual piece conveys the different ways in which lesbians interacted with each other and how the general public perceived these sapphic interactions. Together, the works speak to a broader, dynamic definition regarding what it means to be and to be seen as a lesbian.

Early Childhood Education: The Foundation of Our Nation
No full textStudents were tasked with creating their own mini-documentary based on reflection and research they did over the semester. Their inspiration stemmed from watching another documentary, Raising of America . For this project the students met with a librarian to learn how to research specific topics and they also met with the Media Lab staff to learn how to use a variety of media equipment. In addition to writing a research paper, their culminating project was a mini-documentary highlighting the main points of their research. The goal of this project was to put the importance of advocating for quality early childhood education into the spotlight.
