The World Without: Seeing Grief Through Poets\u27 Eyes

    No full text
These four poets have written book-length elegies about the death of a beloved: Donald Hall, about his wife, poet Jane Kenyon; Tess Gallagher, about her husband, the writer Raymond Carver; Edward Hirsch, about his son Gabriel; Naomi Shihab Nye, about her father, journalist Aziz Shihab. To be in mourning over the death of a loved one is to view the world differently, at least for a time-- perhaps for a long time, perhaps forever. What can poets teach us about facing hard losses and the process of grieving

Gut-Brain Axis: A Comparison of Two Studies

    No full text
This research essay delves into the work of two groups of scientists, studying the effects of the gut microbiota on behavior. The processes in which the experiments were carried out are analyzed, compared, and contrasted. In order to identify which experiment was designed and executed to a higher scientific standard, several aspects were investigated. The methods and materials, such as the data collection procedures, behavioral tests, and study subjects (mice and rats) are examined. The intention is to consider weaknesses and inadequacies, as well as strengths, in both experiments to determine which research is more reliable through a scientific lens. Poster: How Chicago Became a Sweet Home for the Blues

I did research on the historical events that influenced the development of the Chicago Blues. I found that it started in the 1920s during the Great Migration because some blues musicians moved from the south to the north of the United States to have a better life. I went through the 1940s during the Post-Depression Era, which represents an important step for the resurgence and the growth of this particular unique sound. For example, Muddy Waters is one of the most representative musicians by the way that he introduced new elements inside the art form, which influenced the style. Then I moved to the late-20th century to explain how this sound came out and how, even though there was a period of recession and renewal of this sound, this process led to the final, unique sound that everyone knows today. In 2018, our college\u27s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (the international honors society for two-year colleges) explored the ethics behind high school administrative officials reviewing, collecting, and utilizing information posted by high school students online. Through our research, we identified two areas of need: --A significant lack of awareness on the part of high school students concerning the privacy, acquisition, and use of information they post in various forms of social media --A lack of awareness of school policies allowing for and governing the acquisition and use of this information To address these needs, we designed an interactive website aimed at encouraging students to take stronger responsibility when posting information online and ensuring that their school does not use this information improperly. While we experienced significant bureaucratic and logistical challenges in developing our project, we are confident that the work we did will significantly serve our community through encouraging more responsible posting and usage of student information online.
