Poster: First Love: Persephone
No full textIn A.E Stallings poem “First Love:A Quiz,” she represents and shows how easy it is for a man to lure and kidnap a girl. This is a free verse poem and Stallings writes it in a form of a quiz. We believe she writes this in a quiz form because you usually see these types of quizzes in teen magazines like Cosmopolitan. We feel that her intention was to get the attention of young girls and bring attention to these kinds of problems. She uses your typical clichés to show what someone will say or do to show they are of good intentions. Stallings writes, “He offered me a ride--/dinner and a movie, with a wink at the cliché (Lines 6-8). This is the typical way someone asks for a date and it all seems innocent. We learned that Stallings uses Greek myths in her poems and with this poem she\u27s telling the story of how Hades the king of the underworld kidnaps Persephone. She tells this story in a modern way; Stallings writes, “He was my uncle, the one who lived in the half-finished basement, and--/he took me by the hair” (Lines 15-16). The “half-finished basement” represents the underworld and she writes “her uncle” because Persephone\u27s father is Zeus and Hades is his brother. He took her by the hair because she was forcefully taken. Stallings wrote this poem to show how men seem innocent when they\u27re not and helps brings awareness towards this kind of abuse.
