    Get PDF
The objective of this work is to describe a synthesis of the foundations, concepts and principles that articulate and give meaning to the existential phenomenology of Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) establishing as a central axis of investigation his work and phenomenological production. To fulfill this general objective, first of all, the concept of intentionality will be reviewed, in light of the distancing our author takes from the father of phenomenology Edmund Husserl (1859-1938). This will serve as a ground of meaning for our second task, namely: to review and analyze the intimate relationship between the reformulation of intentionality, the ontological preeminence of the pre-reflective cogito and the constitution of the imaginary. It is important to carry out this step, since, as will be seen, it is fundamental for the future of Sartrean philosophy. In this way, we will be able to approach our third objective, to sustain and deepen our analysis toward the most radical thesis in Jean-Paul Sartre’s thought, namely: the absolute freedom of an existing conscience. Finally, we propose a synthetic review of the main precepts of Sartrean existential phenomenology, highlighting its links with the concepts addressed throughout the research. In other words, we will review the relationship between what Jean-Paul Sartre calls pour-soi, en-soi and néantisation.

Japanese philosopher Kitarō Nishida (1870-1945) understood consciousness as the ultimate “place” or basho (in Japanese) that encompasses the individual places of each of the phenomena that we understand as constituting the reality. In his view, consciousness also possesses a force – or rather has a force in it– that binds the plurality of basho together despite their uninterrupted movement and change. Basho, as a “place [tokoro or sho] in a field [ba]” is a “force field” while the “field of consciousness” is both constituted by the “field of forces” of all the basho that exist in it and a “force field” in itself. For Nishida, basho is not merely the location that a thing occupies in space, or even in the consciousness, but is rather an active field that exercises a force on the medium where the object is projected and, at the same time, gives unity to things that are placed in it. The “field of consciousness” acts as a force that makes it impossible for any thing inside of it to move outside, much as Einstein’s “gravitational fields” bind the universe together and prevent the bodies from moving away from each other at the same time as it provides the force that gives unity to a particular body.

    Get PDF
The historical and musical conditions of the Chicanos and Cubans interrelate during the mid-twentieth century. Both groups perceive the expanding musical and ideological influence by the United States as dangerous, which is exposed through the same song-artefact: a split song. The structure and lyrics in “Elvis Pérez” and “Debo partirme en dos” show the authors’ divided nature, a division that stems from their resistance towards the strategical machinery of capitalism during the Cold War. Authors Lalo Guerrero and Silvio Rodríguez, as founders of their own musical genres, Chicana and Nueva Trova, use their songs as a means to unveil their in-between position, the American harassment, and the author´s commitment towards its art and community.

    Get PDF
Eighteenth-century France is characterized by two different directions in the artistic creation. On the one hand, the Enlightenment, and on the other, the texts and plastic works considered as “libertines.” Defining the aesthetic process of the libertine model will lead us to analyze the body pleasures and their embodiment in a representative text such as Le Sopha (1742), written by Crébillon fils. Furthermore, the libertine power over space facilitates for him and his pleasure companions the exaltation of each of the five senses: a feast that incorporates from taste to smell. This article tracks these “pleasures of the mouth” that develop in the frame of the aforementioned oriental tale of Crébillon fils.

This article ponders on the research process and critical effects of an Interdisciplinary Seminar on Critical Thought and contemporary crisis, during far more than fifteen years. It shows the ways and process of an autonomous struggle for taking the floor on cognitive and political terminology brought by women debate communities and among diverse feminist activisms and the humanities. It aims to offer a new collective critical vocabulary to resolve or dissolve actual discussions about violence against women, and how to describe it and visualize its many effects on bodies through a political take of stand and floor.

Philosopher Simone de Beauvoir was one of the first to observe and to criticize, within philosophical discourses, monistic approaches from which the feminine presents itself as absence or negativity. However, in Plato, I find traces of an ontological vision that escapes a monistic or dualistic determination of Being and that allows for an understanding of gender in terms of equality and difference.

Since the 1970s translation theories have benefitted from their contact with social movements and theoretical and critical views from other disciplines. Such is the case of their links with different lines of feminist thought, gender studies, and queer theory, as well as feminist and LGBTIQ+ movements. Those links have reinvigorated the role and scope of translation in different social scenarios, and have supported self-reflection, the rise of other theoretical and critical ways of explaining the translation phenomenon in general, and its concrete outcomes. This article, as the beginning of a theoretical exploration, offers some views on translation as seen from performativity, particularly from repetition and difference—performativity taken as rising from speech acts and used in feminist and queer discussions that have provided them with immediate social, political, and theoretical meanings and uses as regards gender construction. Two elements are added to performativity—the body and emotions, which, taken from Douglas Robinson and Sara Ahmed’s work, turn out to be complementary just as they are crucial to approach gender and translation. Putting these elements together points at the possibility of a more flexible theoretical view of translation, and the recognition of the active role of the reader and, more importantly, of the translator as agents in a performative process that can have an impact on social and cultural transformations. Likewise combining those terms and mechanisms allows for the resignification of traductological jargon and of concepts that define translation itself as a discipline and an activity, something that can lead to its redefinition as a field of knowledge, study, and practice.
