AI-enhanced interface for colonic polyp segmentation using DeepLabv3+ with comparative backbone analysis
Abstract Polyps are one of the early stages of colon cancer. The detection of polyps by segmentation and their removal by surgical intervention is of great importance for making treatment decisions. Although the detection of polyps through colonoscopy images can lead to multiple expert needs and time losses, it can also include human error. Therefore, automatic, fast, and highly accurate segmentation of polyps from colonoscopy images is important. Many methods have been proposed, including deep learning-based approaches. In this study, a method using DeepLabv3+ with encoder-decoder structure and ResNet architecture as backbone network is proposed for the segmentation of colonic polyps. The Kvasir-SEG polyp dataset was used to train and test the proposed method. After images were preprocessed, the training of the proposed network was performed. The trained network was then tested and performance metrics were calculated, and additionally, a GUI (Graphical User Interface) was designed to enable the segmentation of colonoscopy images for polyp segmentation. The experimental results showed that the ResNet-50 based DeepLabv3+ model had high performance metrics such as mean DSC: 0.9873, mean IoU: 0.9751, demonstrating its effectiveness in the segmentation of colonic polyps. In conclusion, our method utilizing DeepLabv3+ with a ResNet-50 backbone achieves highly accurate colonic polyp segmentation. The obtained results demonstrate its potential to significantly enhance colorectal cancer diagnosis and planning for polypectomy surgery through automated image analysis.</jats:p

Kemal Tahir Romanlarında Simmel’in Toplumsal Tiplerini Aramak: Türk İnsanı Üzerine Yeni Bir Yorum
Bahsi geçen karakterleri analiz etmek için sosyolojinin önemli isimlerinden Georg Simmel’in toplumsal tipleri kavramsallaştırma biçimi esas alınmıştır. Amaçlanansa Kemal Tahir’i bu eserleri yazmaya iten şevkin arkasındaki siyasal ve kültürel kodların, toplumsal hayatın inşasındaki etkisini tartışmak ve Simmel’in perspektifiyle Kemal Tahir’in tiplerini değerlendirmektir.Kemal Tahir is a significant novelist who witnessed a critical era, from the late Ottoman Empire to the early years of the Turkish Republic, a time when social and political realities were being transformed. The period he experienced continuous to have sociological, political, and socio-economic impacts that persist to this day. Consequently, his observations on Turkish society remain relevant in many respects. He continues to be an influential intellectual, offering an alternative interpretation of official historiography by blending literature, history, and sociology. His handling of events, versatility, and original perspectives provide readers with unique insights. This study examines seven books by Kemal Tahir between 1955-1980. These books, recently republished in chronological order by Ketebe Publications in 2022 under the series called "1890-1945 Turkey," include; A Castle of Property (Bir Mülkiyet Kalesi), Tired Warrior (Yorgun Savaşçı), People of the Captive City (Esir Şehrin İnsanları), Prisoner of the Captive City (Esir Şehrin Mahpusu), Wolf Law (Kurt Kanunu), Crossroad (Yol Ayrımı), and The Seed in the Steppe (Bozkırdaki Çekirdek). The study focuses on Kemal Tahir's seven novels, totaling over three thousand pages, and the author's characteristics which can be viewed as ‘social types’ representing Turkish people and society. Drawing on Georg Simmel's conceptual framework of social types, the study aims to explore how Kemal Tahir's depiction of characters reflects broader societal norms and values. Additionally, it seeks to analyze the political and cultural influences that motivated Tahir to write these novels and their impact on the construction of social life
Effect of different fixed lingual retainers on tooth mobility: prospective clinical study
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different fixed lingual retainers (LRs) on tooth mobility after orthodontic treatment at the 10-month follow-up. Methods: 72 patients were allocated to three different LR groups (Ortho FlexTech® chain, Bond-A-Braid®, Penta-One®). Additionally, 20 non-treated people were included as a control group. The mobility of six mandibular anterior teeth was measured using a Periotest® device at each time points (before application of LR [T0 ], immediately after application of LR [T1 ] and 10 months after [T2 ] the application of the LR), and at only one time (T0 ) for the control group. Results: The mobility value was significantly lower at T1 and T2 compared to that at T0 (P 0.05). No significant differences in mobility between the T0-T1, T0-T2, and T1-T2 time points were observed across the LR groups (P > 0.05). The mobility of teeth 33 and 43 decreased over time across all study groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Mobility decreased immediately after LR application, but did not change during the 10-month follow-up in the treatment groups. The observed decrease in mobility of canines over time, in contrast to other teeth, suggests a relationship between root size and mobility. Trial registration: The current clinical trial was recorded at clinicaltrials.gov, NCT06284499, 08/02/2024, retrospectively registered
Development of the Digital Transformation Scale: Assessment of Measurement Invariance
The primary aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool that assesses teachers’ perceptions of digital transformation. A total of 828 teachers working in public schools in 2 provinces located in the eastern and southern regions of Turkey participated in the study. The construct validity of the scale was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA). According to the EFA results, the scale has a single-factor structure that explains 67.73% of the total variance. The CFA results indicated acceptable fit indices for the single-factor Digital Transformation Scale (DTS). Criterion validity was evaluated using the 21st Century Technology Literacy Skills Scale (TLSS) and the Resistance to Change Scale (RCS), and it was found that the DTS has a positive relationship with the TCTS and a negative relationship with the RCS. Reliability assessments were conducted by calculating the Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient, test-retest method, and composite reliability values across three different samples, all of which exceeded threshold values. The test-retest analysis confirmed the stability of the scale, while the composite reliability analysis supported its reliability. Item analysis was performed using the “top and bottom 27% rule” and corrected item-total correlations, with both analyses yielding positive results. Additionally, measurement invariance for gender and age variables was established, and the values indicated that measurement invariance was achieved. It was confirmed that the scale provides reliable comparisons between gender and age groups. All these findings support the Digital Transformation Scale as a valid and reliable measurement tool
The Correlation Between Attitudes Towards Health Technologies and Professional Self-Efficacy in Intensive Care Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study
Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the attitudes of intensive care nurses towards health technologies and their attitudes' correlation with their professional self-efficacy.Background: As the impact of digital technology in the field of health is rapidly increasing, intensive care units have become highly technologically advanced. Methods: A total of 90 nurses participated in this study. The data were gathered by using a Personal Information Form, the Health Personnel Health Technologies Assessment Attitude Scale (HPHTAAS) and the Nursing Profession Self-Efficacy Scale (NPSES). The data were analysed using linear regression analysis, ANOVA and t-test.Results: The findings of the study revealed that the HPHTAAS mean score of the intensive care nurses was 97.01 ± 9.23, and their NPSES mean score was 70.40 ± 6.29. The attitudes of the intensive care nurses towards health technologies and their professional self-efficacy were significantly and positively correlated (p < 0.001). In addition, attitudes towards health technologies accounted for 24.9% of the variance of professional self-efficacy.Conclusions: Intensive care nurses' attitudes towards health technologies and professional self-efficacy scores were above average.Implications for nursing and health policy: The evaluation of the effect of health technologies on nurses' self-efficacy can offer significant information to understand the process of their adaptation to technology and the effectiveness of health technologies. However, it is recommended to identify the deficiencies that hinder nurses from integrating new technologies into their professional activities and to organise necessary training programmes in respect thereof.</p
