Assessment of the Effect of Consumption of Lake Rice on Food Security of Households in Lagos State, Nigeria

    No full text
In Nigeria, food insecurity is still a critical challenge among rural and urban households. To enhance the country’s food security status, a novelty was introduced to the nation’s drive towards self-sufficiency in food production in 2016 when Lagos and Kebbi States launched the much-awaited Lagos-Kebbi Rice, christened LAKE RICE. Thus, this study assessed the effect of the consumption of Lake Rice on food security of households in Lagos state, Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used to pick 200 farming households for this study. The analytical tools include: descriptive statistics, likert scale, food security index and logistic regression. The result implied that majority of the sampled respondents were male with an average household size of 6 persons. The food insecure and secure households’ were 26% and 74% respectively when Lake Rice was consumed. On the other hand, the percentage of food insecure and secure households was 29.5% and 70.5% respectively when other rice was consumed. The result indicated that the introduction of Lake Rice has to certain extent reduced the food insecurity of households. This is probably because Lake Rice is readily accessible, available and highly consumed than other rice. The logistic regression suggested that age of the respondents, family size, income and amount of Lake Rice consumed were the critical determinants of food security among households. The most effective coping strategies adopted by the respondents are reduction in daily/monthly spending. The government should encourage the production of Lake Rice by given soft loans to farmers. Policies and strategies that reduce household size should be enthusiastically pursued to reduce food insecurity

Effect of International Remittance Inflows on Investment and Economic Growth in Ethiopia

    No full text
According to the World Bank migration and development report, Ethiopia is among the top remittance-receiving countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. But little attention was given to evaluating the effect of remittance inflows on the Ethiopian economy. Therefore, this paper investigated the relationship between international remittance inflows, private investment, and economic growth in Ethiopia over the year 1991-2020. This study has applied ARDL methods of co-integration to explore the relationship between these economic variables. The result from the econometric analysis indicated that international remittance has a significant positive effect on both private investment and economic growth in the long run. But its effect was found to be statistically insignificant in the short run, though the coefficients are positive. The descriptive analysis also clearly shows that remittance inflow to Ethiopia continuously declined after 2014, though the total number of migrants leaving the country is increasing. This could be mainly because of political instability and the current COVID-19 pandemic effect

The traffickers or brokers used central areas like Addis Ababa and its surrounding cities as depository spaces to recirculate illicit SALW to areas where there are high needs in the country. Study also revealed that illicit SALW trafficking leads to increment of armed groups and number of conflicts to broke out. As a result, many people were injured, and loss life and millions were displaced from their homes. It also triggered the impediment of peace and security; psychological impact and threat; socioeconomic obstruct; political instability and fueled the commission of firearms supported crimes like homicide, robbery and kidnapping in the study populations. Therefore, the study recommends that the security sectors should aware and updated of modus operandi used by illicit SALW traffickers through continues trainings; porous and wide border of the country should subject to regular control and inspections through advanced technology products; there should be regulation that governs antisocial behaviors (i.e. harmful networks and corruptions) of law enforcement organs used to permit inflow of illicit SALW to the country; and creating awareness to all concerned law enforcement agents and stakeholders on the consequences of illicit SALW trafficking to the country.&nbsp

Ethnic Peace vs. Ethnic Conflict: A Tale of Two Resorts from Experiences in Tanzania and Ethiopia

    No full text
While questions of identity more define politics in the twenty-first century than economic or ideological concerns, what leads some nations down a spiral of violence/’ethnic conflict’/ while others can foster peaceful coexistence/’ethnic peace’/ is an unsettled issue. Much has been documented as to the negative impact of ethnicity and its politicization in Africa. But, are any arrangements more likely than others to contain and defuse or reduce the destabilizing political and social tendencies of ethnic pluralism in ethnicallysplit African societies? This article, by exploring the experiences of two purposefully selected case studies (Ethiopia and Tanzania), strives to locate factors that lead these nations to an opposite outcome in their ethnic pluralism. The study relied on extensive secondary sources and employed an interpretative approach. The study’s finding shows that Ethiopia’s and Tanzania’s marked difference in patterns of violence and instability in SubSaharan Africa is not just a coincidence. Instead, the different choices in their ethnicity handling during their critical juncture were pivotal to the opposite outcome. Based on lessons from the two countries, the article made imperative the importance of re-constituting ethnic relations and crafting a civil society to foster peaceful co-existence

Aspects of Traditional Culture in Modern Ethiopian Novel in English: with reference to Shinega’s Village and The Afersata

    No full text
This paper examines some prominent aspects of traditional Ethiopian culture depicted through modern Ethiopian long fiction in English. Ethiopia has a long history of literary tradition in its indigenous languages, mainly in Geez and Amharic. However, the history of Ethiopian creative literature in English is slightly over half a century old. In this sense, it can be considered as a more recent development when compared to the tradition of Ethiopian literature written in Geezand Amharic. Moreover, the output of literature in English in Ethiopia is quite scanty, compared to the output in other African countries such as Nigeria and South Africa, for instance. Although limited in quantity, Ethiopian literature in English comprises important works in fiction, poetry, and drama. One striking feature of Ethiopian creative literature in English, particularly that of long fiction is its fusion with aspects of indigenous traditional culture. This article attempts to explore some salient aspects of Ethiopian traditional culture reflected in Ethiopian literature in English through the analysis of two novels by Sahle Sellassie Berhane Mariam, namely Shinega’s Village and The Afersata. Textual analysis has been used as a basic method to explore the aspects of traditional culture in the novels. A close reading and analysis of the novels revealed four major aspects of traditional culture. These are mystical world view, traditional dispensation of justice, infusion of folklore, and a sense of continuity

Pandemic Schooling and Teachers’ Professional Identity in the Era of COVID-19 in Ethiopia: Summer-in-Service Trainees in Focus

    No full text
The global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in widespread school closures, impacting teaching and learning across countries. At the epicenter of the virus, in Ethiopia, students and teachers were obliged to stay at home where remote learning was not arranged well. After a few months of school closures, classes were reopened with emergency measures in place. However, the teaching and learning process faced significant challenges, and the professional identity of teachers was adversely affected during the pandemic schooling. This study aims to explore the professional identity of in-service teachers in this context. The study utilized a narrative inquiry approach and involved purposefully selected summer-in-service teacher trainees based on three criteria. Data were collected using four instruments: documents, in-depth interviews, reflective journals, and a questionnaire. The findings indicate that the arrangements made for remote teaching or e-teaching had a detrimental impact on the effectiveness of pandemic schooling. Teachers' adoption of pedagogy suitable for the pandemic was also found to be limited. The study further confirms that COVID-19 has influenced the identity formation of teachers, as they experienced concerns and panic regarding their health security. Based on these results, conclusions were drawn, and implications for teachers' professional development programs were presented
