THE IMPORTANCE OF SEMANTICS IN THE TEACIllNG OF LANGUAGE

    No full text
Many linguists have adopted the name semanticsto refer to the study of meaning of natural languages.Specialists in differentflelds have recognized the rolesemantics plays in language. At the same time othernoted scholars have expressed different views aboutthe place of semantics in the study of the grammar ofa language. There are argumentsfor and against theimportance of the meaning componnnt of the naturallanguages which were expressed by the structural, transformational generative, and semantic schools. The views presented in each of these cases seem tooppose one another even after some have revised theiroriginal ideas. These and the impotant role semanticsplays in the communication process have verysignificant pedagogical implications to the practisinglanguage teacher

MACHINE LEARNING BASED CONTAMINATION DETECTION IN WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

    Get PDF
Water is a necessary component of all human activities. According to the United Nations World Water Assessment Program, every day, 2 million tons of sewage, manufacturing, and agricultural waste are discharged into the world's water. Due to population demands and dwindling clean water supplies as well as available water pollution management mechanisms; there is an urgent need to use computational methods to intelligently manage available water. This paper proposes artificial neural networks, specifically, Convolutional Neural Networks, for automated water impurity detection. To refine the model, the picture of turbid water in the pipe was used to detect events. The algorithm of deep learning achieved 96.3 percent accuracy after extensive training with a dataset of 4220 images reflecting various levels of contamination. This shows that, the model can be used in water system pollution detection

Experience and the Growth of Understanding: A Book Review

    Get PDF
The book Experience and the Growth of Understanding was written by David W. Hamlyn (1924-2012), who was a professor of philosophy at the University of London at Birkbeck. Organized under 11 chapters, the book presents a critical examination of diverse issues pertinent to experience, understanding, learning, and knowledge. A close look at the124 pages of the book reveals that the author’s work could be put under two general themes. The first general theme, which is discussed in chapters one to four, was concerned with an assessment and critics of the author concerning the major epistemological views. Here he tried to thoroughly investigate great works of scholars with regard to the source of knowledge. In the second general theme, which is presented in the remaining chapters of the book, Hamlyn proposed his own views and suggestions on major issues of experience, and its relationships with understanding, knowledge, and learning. With an intention to ameliorate the “ego-centric view” of both traditional and modern theories of knowledge, Hamlyn explicates his own positions on diverse issues of knowledge and understanding

The study makes a brief Teview of the literatuTe on the conceptsof ethnic groups, ethnicity, family and conflicts. Then it presents the methodof data collection followed by the findings of the survey study, whichinvolved the largest nine ethnic groups in Ethiopia. About 2, 165 familyheads (52.98% males and 47.02% females) of which the Amhara (373subjects), Oromo (360), Tigraway (217), Guragie (177), Somale (206),Sidama (181), Wotaita (249), Hadiya (212) and Afar (190) ethnic groupsparticipated in the study. A questionnaire consisting of items on varioussocio-economic issues was completed for each participant in 1995/96. Twoof the main issues studied were causes of conflicts and methods of conflictresolution in the family. The results show that money and economic issues, misconduct of one of the partners and jealousy are the first, second andthird ranked, respectively, causes of c.onflicts in famifies. Sexualincompatibility and financial problems are the main causes for conflictsbetween husbands and wives. However, some ethnic groups such asTigraway, Amhara and Guragie considered marital infidelity and sexualincompatibility as the main causes of marital conflicts, while Oromo, Somaleand Afar indicated that not bearing a child as the first ranked cause ofconflict. Mediation and arbitration by a third party (elders, relatives, friends)and accommodating the disagreements and conflicts (living with it) aresome of the main techniques of conflict resolution in most families. Corporalpunishments (physical fights) have a/so been reported as techniques ofresolving conflicts
