Love and Politics: Ibsen\u27s Critique of the Marriage Institution

    No full text
Ibsen\u27s critical take on the marriage institution, which he decried for having "ruined the human race," stands as a corrective to the positive image we currently have about marriage. The extension of the right to marriage to same sex couples is rightly celebrated as an exciting further victory in human rights. Yet politically radical voices within the LGBTQ community warn against seeing marriage as themost socially progressive aim for the movement. Revisiting Ibsen\u27s plays can guide the exploration of the question whether what Nora in A Doll House calls the "miracle of miracles," the radical practice of love, can be made possible within matrimony

Relisant Ibsen. Hier, aujourd’hui, demain… quelques visages du temps

    No full text
Choosing Ibsen, the second most staged playwright in the world after Shakespeare, for a contemporary production is one of the best choices for theater directors today. This article explains why Ibsen\u27s works are able to inspire three female directors in Bucharest to address the issue of women\u27s emancipation in the frame of the Hedda\u27s Sisters project, and at the same time it shows how they can be used by one of the most well-known European directors, Thomas Ostermeier, in order to develop a more complex "sociologicallaboratory." The author also discusses the examples of the Romanian theater and film director Lucian Pintilie who staged the Wild Duck, of the American director Lee Breuer and his company Mabou Mines, with their world famous A Doll\u27s House, of the Romanian born American director Andrei Şerban, who recently staged Hedda Gabler, and makes a leap in time back to Meyerhold\u27s ideas aboutthis Ibsenian character. The final part is devoted to some famous stagings of Peer Gynt in France, thereby emphasizing the relevance of Ibsen\u27s play for contemporary international audiences

SCRIITORUL ȘI REVOLUȚIA. CARTOGRAFII ALE IMAGINARULUI PLATONOVIAN

    No full text
This study analyzes the political imaginary in the literature of Andrei Platonov, highlighting the tension between the utopian momentum of the revolution’s beginning and the absurdity of everyday Soviet existence. Drawing on letters and major literary works (Chevengur, The Foundation Pit, Dzhan, The Juvenile Sea), the essay traces the metamorphoses of Platonov’s imaginary – from a communism infused with humanist ideals to a technologized and violent Bolshevism. In counterpoint to these political projections, Platonov constructs an imaginary world of childhood as a space of resistance and solidarity. The concept of “grey existentialism” proposed here designates the way in which Platonov’s characters embrace the impossibility of existence against the backdrop of a precarious and ideologically oppressive world. The interpretation is brought into dialogue with Sartre’s theories of imagination and with Camus’s ethics of the absurd, suggesting a convergence between Platonov’s universe and the discreet heroism of Camusian figures

. The issue of identity and its loss has often been addressed in émigré literature, as it deals with the inner conflict that individuals feel in relation with themselves and the society in which they live. Thus, many Russian writers at the beginning of the 20th century who experienced emigration turned to literature in order to express their feelings and ideas about integrating in a new environment, but also to represent the impact that this change may have on immigrants’ perception of their own life. The purpose of this article is to analyze the psychological mechanisms through which some of Nina Berberova’s characters (a writer belonging to the first wave of Russian emigration 1920-1940) come to define their identity, attributing their social and professional failures to the changes brought about by emigration. To this end, we will consider the characters’ perspective as well as the narrator’s discourse. We will also analyze the possible causes of the emergence of an identity crisis in the lives of these characters, both before and after their refuge abroad

Analysing smart governance in public service delivery: evidence from 61 smart cities in Indonesia

    No full text
Digital governance transformation has become crucial in Indonesia, in line with increasing urbanisation and technological innovation that drives public demand for better government services. This article examines the evolution of digital public services in 61 Indonesian cities that will become smart cities in 2023. The scope of the research focuses on the use of The study investigates the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in public service delivery. Methods employed are document analysis and review of government sites. Findings indicate that numerous cities have utilised digital technology to manage their populations, licensing, and health service delivery, streamlining service provision and making it more accessible. City types differ in their levels of digital adoption. Adoption rates are higher in metropolitan and large cities than in medium and small cities. The addition of government services to big applications, particularly in large cities, is a significant step for Indonesia’s digital bureaucracy. These platforms reduce the government’s burden and enhance the user experience by enabling one system to do even more. So, one needs to invest in digital technology and gain support from policymakers, while also upgrading skills to overcome it. By building more super apps, we will have smarter governance that is inclusive and effective

Sustaining creative kampong through circular economy: a study on Binong Jati’s knitting industry

    No full text
Waste management is a considerable urban challenge which remains difficult to resolve. To address inadequate waste management, the widespread introduction of circular economy principles can function as a viable solution, particularly in developing countries with potential for economic growth through creative villages (Creative Kampong). This study aims to support the sustainability of the knitting industry centre in Binong Jati by minimising waste problems through the implementation of circular economy principles. Issues such as waste accumulation in Greater Bandung Urban areas negatively impact the environment and community well-being in Bandung, affecting Creative Kampong Binong Jati. This research studies the implementation of the circular economy to enhance the sustainability of Creative Kampong Binong Jati. Utilising a qualitative method and the 9R strategy to measure the level of circular economy implementation, alongside environmental indicators to assess sustainability. The study concludes that the adoption of a circular economy solution has reached the highest level of the 9R strategy, although further improvements in implementation and community knowledge are needed. The data collection method includes a literature review of similar case studies, interviews with creative industry stakeholders, and direct observation. Most environmental indicators have been met, indicating the village\u27s overall environmental sustainability. Recommendations include increasing the frequency of urban waste collection, raising community awareness about waste management, more routine socialisation of the Kang Pisman (Reduce, Separate, Utilise) programme, and promoting supply chains that support sustainability from local governments. Implementing these recommendations is expected to support the sustainability of Creative Kampong Binong Jati comprehensively

Assessment of urban sprawl, land use/land cover changes and land consumption rate in Hisar City, Haryana, India

    No full text
Keeping in mind the detrimental effects of sprawl on the urban landscape, an accurate and thorough analysis of the spatiotemporal growth pattern is necessary for well-organized and sustainable urban progression. This study mainly focuses on urban sprawl and land use/land cover changes (LULCC) in Hisar City of Haryana, India. The extent of urban sprawl and changes in different land utilization over 30 years have been assessed using Shannon’s entropy technique. Additionally, the land consumption rate and landabsorption coefficient are introduced to support the quantitative evaluation of changes. Finally, the accuracy assessment (producer’s, user’s, and overall) with the Kappa coefficient was applied for spatial accuracy valuation to confirm the land use/land cover (LULC) reliability based on Landsat multi-temporal satellite data from 1991 to 2021. The study deals with water bodies, open/bare land, vegetation, agricultural lands and built-up area as LULC categories for changes evaluations. As per findings, the built-up area has increased more than twice (2,826.72 hectares) by the total area throughout the studied period, whereas farming land has lost almost half part (3,497.94 hectares). The urban sprawl and LULC change mechanisms have directly influenced other natural resources, including farming land. The increasing entropy values also confirm the sprawl or fragmented development in the city, mainly from the centre to the periphery. This unrestricted expansion has changed the geography of the concerned region and surpassed the land use plans. The suggested policy options may assist decision-makers in resolving the urban impediments, minimizing the additional loss of peripheral landscape, and achieving longterm urban growth planning in the study area

Does the digital divide matter? Comparison between Java and the rest of Indonesia in developing smart villages

    No full text
Indonesia faces development disparity issues, particularly between Java and the rest of the country. This uneven development has resulted in a digital divide between these regions. This study examines the digital divide in Java and the one outside Java through the perspective of smart village, which positions technology as an enabler for development, and identifies the contribution of smart village to village development outcomes in Indonesia. The Spearman Rank test is used to determine the correlation between the factors shaping the smart village concept in Indonesia and the Village Development Index. The main factors that influence smart villages in Indonesia are ICT and internal village factors. Findings showed that overall, smart village factors are significantly and positively correlated with village development, although the correlation is weak. However, there is a difference in the contribution of ICT factors to village development in Java and outside it. ICT factors significantly and positively correlate with village development outside Java, but the opposite is true in Java. This indicates that the smart village concept offers more significant benefits for outside Java regions through its role as a connector between regions with spatial inefficiencies and low population agglomeration

Vision and Indifference: Writing Perceptions of the Petroglyphs of Murujuga1

    No full text
The rocky hills of Murujuga in the Pilbara region of Western Australia host approximately a million petroglyphs or stone carvings. The petroglyphs have been extensively catalogued and studied in recent years. Contemporary scholarship relating to this rock art is broadly positivist in approach. This essay draws on this existing research yet argues that an over-emphasis on information gathering and on the formulation of testable hypotheses in recent scholarship has led to a tendency to overlook the importance of Murujuga as a landscape. Inspired by Griselda Pollock\u27s attentiveness to the influence of ways about writing about art upon its reception and interpretation, the essay outlines some of the drawbacks of these approaches. For Pollock, art history does not simply document the art of the past – it also works to produce that art. Using Pollock\u27s ideas about art and culture as well as those of Michael Baxandall, Johannes Fabian and Tim Ingold as methodological touchstones, the essay seeks to indicate some of the pitfalls accompanying current approaches towards the study of the petroglyphs and urges for greater thinking about the roles of the making of the petroglyphs and of their geographical context as aspects of their enduring significance

    Imaginea arde
