Finnish Energy Attitudes 2015
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin väestön suhtautumista energiapoliittisiin kysymyksiin. Kysymyksillä kartoitettiin vastaajien mielipiteitä erilaisista energia-asioita koskevista käsityksistä, kannanotoista, mielipiteistä, uskomuksista, arvostuksista, asenteista ja tiedoista. Aluksi vastaajalta kysyttiin mielipiteitä eri sähköntuotantomuotojen käytön lisäämisestä tai vähentämisestä ja tiedusteltiin suhtautumista ilmastonmuutokseen. Seuraavaksi vastaajalle esitettiin väittämiä energia-asioista, kuten niiden ympäristöhaitoista ja ydinvoiman vastuullisuudesta. Väittämissä käsiteltiin ensimmäistä kertaa tarkemmin vesivoimaa. Lopuksi vastaajaa pyydettiin arvioimaan eri tahojen tietolähteiden luotettavuutta keskusteltaessa sähköntuotannosta ja energiapolitiikasta. Taustamuuttujina ovat sukupuoli, ikäryhmä, asuinkunnan koko, maakunta, peruskoulutus, ammatillinen koulutus, ammattiryhmä, talouden vuositulot ja poliittinen suuntautuneisuus. The survey investigated Finnish attitudes and opinions on energy policy. The questions charted the respondents' conceptions, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes, and knowledge regarding energy issues. The respondents were first asked whether Finland should increase or decrease the use of certain energy sources (e.g. coal, peat, natural gas, nuclear power, hydroelectric power, wind power, solar power) in electricity generation. Their attitudes toward climate change were also examined. Next, the respondents were asked to what extent they agreed or not with a set of attitudinal statements on, for instance, the environmental impact of different energy sources, the safety and responsibility of nuclear power, and the effectiveness of utilising solar energy with current technology. More detailed questions regarding hydroelectric power were included in the survey for the first time. The respondents were also asked if the use of nuclear power was justifiable to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and if they would be willing to pay a higher price for electricity if it decreased the environmental harm or dependence on nuclear energy. Finally, the respondents were asked to evaluate the trustworthiness of a variety of information sources regarding energy production and energy policy, including the Ministry of the Environment, the Government, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, different energy companies, and the press. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, type of municipality of residence, region of residence (NUTS3), level of education, economic activity and occupational status, household gross income, and political party preference
Youth Media Participation in Argentina, Egypt, Finland and India 2009-2011
Aineiston tarkoituksena on kartoittaa nuorten mediaosallistumista. Mielipiteiden julkaisemisen lisäksi tiedusteltiin, julkaisevatko nuoret omia (luovia) tuotoksiaan, kuten tekstejä, musiikkia, piirustuksia, videoita tai tietokoneohjelmia esimerkiksi jossakin edellä luetelluista medioista. The aim of this study was to chart the media participation of adolescents in Argentina, Egypt, Finland and India. The questions surveyed personal, social and public use of media as well as media literacy. First, the respondents were asked what media equipment (e.g. newspapers, radio, television, mobile phone, music players, video game consoles, computers) they had access to at home or somewhere else, and how often the respondents used them. They were also asked if a variety of media-related services were offered in their community/neighbourhood (e.g. libraries, movie theatres, internet cafés). In addition, the survey examined respondents' opinions on a variety of statements relating to matters such as media skills, rules for media use in the family, interest in media content, and fandom. Next, the respondents were asked which media they used for information-seeking regarding schoolwork, practical everyday matters such as timetables or the weather, current events and politics, puberty and sexuality, products and services, and which media they used for e.g. contacting relatives and friends, searching for a romantic partner, or contacting celebrities. They were also asked if they used media together with their families, friends, partners or virtual friends. It was asked if the respondents published their opinions via different media channels about social, political, cultural and environmental matters or human rights matters. The respondents were also asked if they would have liked to publish their opinions more often and why they had not done so. In addition to publishing opinions, they were asked if they published their own creative content, such as text, music, drawings, videos or computer programmes. Regarding media literacy, opinions were examined on the reliability and truthfulness of news articles, television programmes, internet pages, and advertisements. It was also surveyed whether the respondents thought that young people should be discussed more often in the media. They were also asked if the media often portrayed a distorted image of foreign countries and cultures. Next, the respondents' interest in a variety of themes was examined (both in "factual" and in "fictional" media), along with whether they published opinions or content regarding these themes or discussed them with other people (the themes included e.g. news, politics and society, the environment, human rights, sports, beauty and fashion, art, science, history, technology, and celebrities). The respondents were also asked if they had ever been interviewed for a newspaper article, a radio or television programme or some other medium, and to what extent it was possible for young people to have their opinions heard. The survey also charted respondents' experiences of limitations set on media use by e.g. governmental authorities or legislation, religion, school, family or friends. Finally, the respondents' internet use was surveyed with regard to how often they used the internet in different places (e.g. at school, at home, at a friend's home, in public or on a mobile phone) and for different purposes (e.g. information-seeking, e-mail, shopping, instant messaging, social media, gaming, or watching videos/movies). The respondents' mobile phone use was also examined with regard to how often they used a mobile phone for phone calls, SMS messages, gaming, listening to music or radio, using the internet, taking photos and watching videos, among others. Background variables included age, gender, country, type of neighbourhood, parents' occupations (categorised), ethnic group as well as the language spoken at home and the language used for responding to the questionnaire (mother tongue/English)
Citizen Deliberation on the Swedish Language and Swedish-speaking Minority in Finland: Control Survey 2014
Tutkimus kartoitti suomalaisten mielipiteitä ruotsin kielen asemasta Suomessa. Vastaajien luonteenpiirteitä kartoitettiin kysymällä miten he toimisivat tietyissä tilanteissa sekä pyydettiin heitä väittämien avulla kuvailemaan omia luonteenpiirteitään. The study, which included three separate surveys as well as group deliberation sessions, charted Finnish opinions on the role of the Swedish language in Finland. This final survey in the study was used as a control and the results of the actual study were compared with it. The respondents were asked to what extent they agreed with a number of statements about Swedish and the Swedish-speaking population in Finland. The statements covered the status of Swedish in the Finnish society, compulsory Swedish at school, advantages of a bilingual society, and views on Swedish-speaking Finns. The control survey also included questions about political views, such as interest in politics, importance of different areas of politics, frequency of discussing political and social issues with other people, and civic engagement. Police Barometer 2016
The survey studied Finnish public opinion on the role and services of the police, feelings about safety and security, fear of crime, experiences of crime, and trust in the national institutions in crime prevention. First, the respondents were asked how important certain bodies (e.g. the Church, the Customs, schools, the Defence Forces) were to crime prevention and to improving the safety of their neighbourhood. Opinions on the extent to which the police force can prevent civil disorder and maintain safety were charted as well as whether the respondents had experiences of international crime. The respondents were asked how important certain things were in terms of maintaining public order and safety by the police, for instance, that the employment situation would improve, people suffering from substance abuse would receive treatment, prostitution would be prohibited and that the police would adopt zero-tolerance towards law-breaking. Views were probed on which tasks of the police were important. One theme examined the ways and means of improving road safety. Sense of security and fear of crime were studied by asking how worried the respondents were about certain things (e.g. assaults, housebreaking, drink driving, sexual harassment, Internet data security). Some questions focused on how safe the respondents felt at home during the day, in the city centre after dark, in their neighbourhood late at night, etc. The respondents were asked whether they themselves had become victims of certain crimes, whether they had notified the police, and if not, why. Further questions surveyed whether the respondents had been eyewitnesses to any crimes (e.g. burglaries or car theft) or witnesses/complainants in a criminal procedure, and whether they had experienced a threat or pressure from somebody subjected to a criminal procedure. In addition, measures taken by the respondents to reduce the risk of crime (e.g. using a security alarm system or avoiding the city centre after dark) were charted. Opinions on the accessibility and visibility of the police were examined by asking what the distance was from the respondent's home to the nearest police station, how long they thought it would take for the police to respond to an emergency, and whether the respondents had used the online services of the police. The quality of police services were assessed with questions about the last time the respondents had contacted the police, reasons for doing so, and how they had been treated. The respondents also rated how well the police had succeeded in solving crimes, preventing crime, providing help quickly, etc. Opinions on the attitude of the police towards people from different ethnic backgrounds were studied. The survey also charted opinions on the development of the services provided by the police as well as trust in various institutions, such as the police, emergency and protective services, private security guards, the Border Guard, courts, the Customs, and the Defence Forces. Opinions on the likelihood of police corruption were surveyed. In conclusion, the respondents were asked how long they had lived in their municipality of residence, how often they travelled abroad, and what means of transport they used in the population centre of their municipality and other municipalities in the evening or at night. Background variables included, for instance, the respondent's gender, age group, economic activity and occupational status, level of education, mother tongue, Internet use, household composition, number of children living in the household, gross annual household income, type of neighbourhood, and municipality and region (NUTS2 and NUTS3) of residence

Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin myös halukkuudesta osallistua varsinaisiin keskustelutilaisuuksiin. Lisäksi aineistossa on tutkijoiden muodostama muuttuja vastaajan valikoitumisesta keskusteluun. The study, which included three separate surveys as well as group deliberation sessions, charted Finnish opinions on the role of the Swedish language in Finland. In this stage of the study, a survey was used to examine which of the participants were suitable to participate in the deliberation sessions. First, the respondents were presented a number of statements about Swedish and Swedish-speaking people living in Finland. The statements charted views on, among others, the role and significance of Swedish in the Finnish society, compulsory Swedish in basic education, benefits of being bilingual for Finland, Swedish-speaking people in Finland, and service provision in Swedish. The data also contain a variable on whether the respondent was selected for the deliberation. The researchers wanted to include in the deliberation those respondents who had clear views either for or against Swedish. Participants were selected by excluding respondents with no clear opinion on the topic or extreme opinions out of all the respondents who had indicated that they wished to participate in the deliberation. Background variables included the respondent's gender, year of birth, education, employment activity and occupational status, and region of residence
