Volume 2: Empowering educators mastering online Hackathon
This volume serves as a comprehensive guide for educators seeking to design, implement, and facilitate online hackathons in higher education. Developed through the HACK-IT project, it provides a step-by-step methodology—from preparation and technical setup to facilitation and evaluation—rooted in best practices and practical experiences. It emphasizes the importance of digital competencies, highlighting how tools like Zoom, Discord, and collaborative platforms can be leveraged to create engaging, flexible, and impactful learning environments. The guide explores the evolution and structure of hackathons, presenting them as pedagogical tools that promote innovation, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration among students.
Through detailed chapters and supporting resources, the book equips educators with strategies to foster creativity, manage virtual teamwork, and guide participants through a dynamic, problem-solving journey. It also discusses how to evaluate hackathon outcomes, gather meaningful feedback, and celebrate participant achievements. By focusing on inclusive, scalable approaches and digital literacy, this volume empowers educators to embrace hackathons as a transformative practice in contemporary teaching and learning
Curated Database of Pathological Speech Parameters
The cured database was built in (Fernandes, et al., 2019) taking into account the sounds available in the Saarbrucken Voice Database (SVD) (Barry, et al.).
Included in this cured database were 19 diseases and control subjects. It has a total number of samples of 707 pathological subjects (distributed by the various diseases) and 194 control subjects, and for each subject there is a sentence and three vowels /a/, /i/, and /u/, each vowel with three tones: high, low and normal.
In the cured database there is an initial page containing the id of each subject, the age, gender, characterisation group that corresponds to the subject and the abbreviation that is used for this group.
For each group there are 3 pages.
The first page of each group includes the parameters: absolute jitter, relative jitter, absolute shimmer, relative shimmer, HNR, NHR and autocorrelation. For each subject, the subject's age and gender are also identified, as well as the vowel and tone to which the parameter corresponds.
The second page lists the MFCCs of the recorded sentences, in this there are 13 cepstral coefficients throughout the sentence, making a total of 50 sentence segments.
Finally, the third page lists the MFCCs for the vowels. This parameter was also extracted with 13 cepstral coefficients for each vowel and tone. However, for the vowels the sound was not segmented as happened for the phrase, extracting a value per coefficient for the whole sound.

Fall Videos with Thermal Camera
[NOT PUBLIC DATASET]
This dataset consists of 30 thermal videos capturing fall events, recorded using a thermal camera under controlled conditions. The dataset was created with the participation of 10 volunteers, who performed the action of falling. The objective was to collect thermal video data that can be used in the development and evaluation of fall detection systems, particularly in contexts where visual privacy is a concern and thermal imaging offers a non-invasive alternative.
All recordings were carried out in an indoor environment with consistent conditions. Each participant contributed to multiple recordings, and different types of falls (e.g., forward, backwards, lateral) were performed to provide variability within the dataset.
The videos were recorded at a resolution of 640 × 480 and a frame rate of 30fps, using a Seek Thermal Compact Pro camera. All data was collected with the informed consent of the participants. The dataset aims to support research in areas such as elderly care, health monitoring, and intelligent surveillance.
All recordings were conducted in Bragança, with data collection completed on June 2023

Data supporting "Reactive Materials and Solutions Towards Treatment and Reuse of Waters with Contaminants of Emerging Concern"
This dataset supports the book chapter “Reactive Materials and Solutions Towards Treatment and Reuse of Waters with Contaminants of Emerging Concern” (Elsevier, 2024). It contains the experimental data presented in Figures 1–3 and Table 1 of the chapter. The Excel file includes: (i) FTIR spectra of different catalyst materials (PCLAY, CNT@PP, and CoFe@C); (ii) textural properties, specific surface area (SBET) and total pore volume (VT); (iii) normalized H2O2 and pollutant (PCM) concentration profiles during catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) reactions using distinct catalysts; and (iv) PCM removal efficiencies and iron leaching values. The dataset provides data used to build the reported figures and tables, supporting reproducibility and further analysis of catalyst: activity relationships in CWPO systems for the degradation of emerging contaminants in water
Chestnut Blight BioCare - Dictis
How propagules of biological control agents (BCA) are dispersed and distances over which they are disseminated determine the efficacy of the biocontrol strategy. The dataset includes georeferenced points of the BCA (Dictis) applied at a relevant geographic scale in 2023–2024 for chestnut blight biocontrol. It will be updated with data on its efficacy and dispersion
Outlier Detection Dataset for Robotics Applications
This dataset was developed to facilitate the training and evaluation of computer vision models for obstacle detection in robotics. Images were captured in a controlled environment, specifically on the competition floor used in the RobotAtFactory 4.0 (RAF) competition, to resemble the expected future application scenarios of the algorithm closely. The data was collected using a mobile platform with two cost-effective cameras: the Raspberry Pi Camera Module v2 (RaspCamV2) and the ESP32-CAM (EspCam).
The dataset comprises 2,907 images at a resolution of 640x480 pixels. Among these, 1,638 images contain annotations of obstacles represented by mannequins, while 1,269 images depict backgrounds without them. Annotations were performed using the LabelImg software, ensuring compatibility with the YOLO model.
This dataset is well-suited for object detection tasks in robotics, providing a diverse array of scenarios that support the training and benchmarking of machine learning algorithms, particularly in environments similar to those encountered during the RAF competition
Integration Techniques - MathE
This repository contains a database of questions on Integration Techniques, part of the MathE project (https://mathe.ipb.pt/), a mathematics teaching platform that offers personalized and dynamic learning paths for each student. The platform has 1849 students distributed across 72 universities in 27 countries, and has a total of 1874 questions registered, covering various topics and subtopics that cover the entire range of higher education content.
The database consists of questions and supporting materials, such as links to videos and PDF files, with the aim of facilitating the learning process. This set of information can be used both for training Large Language Model (LLM) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), as well as for advances in the development of intelligent and adaptive platforms
Volume 1: Hack your teaching through Community of Practice (CoP)
This volume explores the integration of Communities of Practice (CoPs) within higher education as a means to enhance teaching innovation and foster professional development. Developed through the HACK-IT project funded by the European Commission, the publication outlines how CoPs serve as collaborative platforms where university educators can share experiences, co-create knowledge, and adopt modern pedagogical practices such as hackathons, design thinking, and gamification. The guide details the conceptual foundations of CoPs, their structure, participant roles, and the benefits they bring in terms of knowledge exchange, mentorship, and reflective teaching practices. The HACK-IT CoP specifically utilizes the Discord platform, emphasizing accessibility, collaboration, and the application of digital technologies in education.
Through practical guidance and real-world examples, the publication highlights how CoPs can stimulate continuous learning and support the digital transformation of higher education. It emphasizes the importance of building trust, ensuring ethical data management, and promoting inclusive participation. The handbook aims to inspire educators to engage in dynamic, peer-supported learning environments that respond to the challenges of today’s VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) educational landscape. Ultimately, the HACK-IT initiative illustrates the power of community-driven innovation to enhance both teaching quality and student learning outcomes across institutions
