No full textAnton came from a socialist family, which influenced his views on matters such as Europe and the upliftment of man. He had a passion for reading and ended up at HBS in Schiedam. He also played sports fanatically and was actually still searching for the meaning of my life. During his time at HBS, he chose to study Tropical Forestry in Wageningen, with the ideal of improving the world. Wageningen offered a general propaedeutic year, which offered flexibility. Around the same time, Anton also started the youth exchange in Schiedam.
Although not part of the hippie movement, he was influenced by the spirit of the times that sought change and a better world. The idea was that if people learned about other cultures, there would be no war. He had acquired this feeling strongly from home, both from my grandparents and parents. That's why Anton was open to the idea of going to another country and living with a local family. His first experience with this was near Esslingen, where he stayed with a family and got to know their way of life.
Anton's father played a role in the youth exchange. He was chairman of the royal choir Orpeus and was on the executive board of the Schiedam Community, an organization that was then active with, among other things, the youth exchange. At the time, Esslingen had exchanges with Vienne in France, Udine in Italy, and possibly already with Neath in Wales. Schiedam was added to this and Anton was part of the first group to go to Esslingen as part of this exchange.
He has often participated in exchanges. Getting to know different cultures through youth exchanges had a big impact on him. Each place, such as Esslingen, Neath in Wales, Udine in Italy, and Norrköping in Sweden, offered unique experiences and diverse ways of thinking, unlike Schiedam. These experiences strengthened his conviction of the importance of a united Europe and his opposition to nationalistic ideas.
In the 1960s, after the war, the Germans viewed exchanges differently than other countries. Esslingen was the main initiator. Many people involved had consciously experienced the war, which influenced the atmosphere. Anton's grandfather was one of the first socialist mayors of the Netherlands, just before and after the war, and had a strong aversion to Germany. His grandparents even avoided Germany on their way to Switzerland. Although he was consciously given this, he never had that negative feeling towards Germany. He understood it and I read a lot about it, but it did not influence my experiences in Esslingen or my interactions with Germans.
During Anton's student days he had to gain practical experience for Tropical Forestry. This led to a self-organized world trip of two months in Nigeria, four months in New Zealand, and two months in Fiji, between my candidates and my engineering studies. This adventurous trip partly arose from his previous experiences with youth exchanges from Schiedam to different places in Europe

No full textInterview in het kader van onderzoek naar de voortleving van de herinneringen aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog in drie generaties maar ook over ervaringen met verschillende oorlogen, conflicten en migratie daarna en de invloed hiervan op (familie)relaties, identiteit, psyche en vrijheidsbeleving. De titel van het onderzoek is 'Oorlog en vrijheid in drie generaties: herinneringen aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Indonesië'. Voor dit onderzoek zijn interviews gebruikt van drie generaties van vijf families. De interviews met de eerste generatie, die de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Indonesië en de daaropvolgende migratie naar Nederland zelf heeft meegemaakt, zijn tussen 1999 en 2013 afgenomen in eerdere interviewprojecten (leeftijd geïnterviewden: 68-90). De interviews met een kind (59-70) en kleinkind (19-49) van de oorlogsgetroffene zijn in het kader van dit onderzoek afgenomen. No full textDuring Rein’s time at the HBS (Higher Burgerschool), Rein was quite social thanks to his father's involvement in clubs like the Tafelronde and Lionsclub in Schiedam, which organized activities for children. Their strong Catholic background, attending church weekly at Liduina church, greatly influenced Rein. The Schiedamse Lawn Tennisvereniging (SLV) was exclusively for Catholics, with no Protestants or others allowed to join.
The discussion of the emerging ‘counterculture’ within the Catholic context was almost non-existent and not accepted. Rein’s biggest act of rebellion was not to attend church every Sunday. During this period of anti-sectarianism, there was also an increase in interaction with other cities and peoples. This led his parents and Rein to gradually become more open to new ideas.
During his time at school, he participated in the Schiedam youth exchange program, for which he was asked to organize activities. The hosting of participants could easily take place at home because his parents encouraged him to interact with foreigners.
Participants in a youth exchange would just come for a two-week visit in Schiedam, and they had to get to know the people, and had to learn their language for a month at home were only English and German was spoken. Overall, it went very well. However, Rein’s grandfather was killed by the Germans. And his family lived with the grandmother in the grandparenmtal house, as was quite common at the time. The grandmother actually didn't want them to associate with the Germans or have them come to their house. Rein’s mother, in particular, pushed for it.
The Netherlands is a very small country surrounded by large countries like France, Germany, and England. The entire trade was with these countries. he doesn’t see a youth exchange as the expression of a European ideal, but rather as a way for cultures to get to know each other better. The European aspect for Rein was primarily the need to learn languages. During the exchange programme, Rein doesn't recall discussing serious European politics, but they did talk about bringing together people who had fought in wars years ago to create a more peaceful environment. This was easier for the English than for the Germans.
Early exposure to various people at different levels allowd him to navigate social situations. As a boy of fifteen, Rein talked with mayors, with company directors. He could ask questions and communicate effectively, and that has stayed with him my whole life. The ease with which you learn to communicate, looking back on youth exchanges, is incredibly helpful, according to Rein
FAIR Photos - CLARIAH FAIR Data Call 2023
No full textThe collection of Fotopersbureau De Boer is particularly notable for its abundance of subjects and size. It contains valuable material for research on current topics such as environment, energy, and social inequality, and provides a glimpse into the everyday lives of people.
The 'FAIR Photos' project has enriched the metadata of the collection by linking them to thesauri of locations, persons, and keywords in order to further open up the collection for use in research and the cultural heritage sector. This newly added information is reintegrated into the archive's collection management system to ensure long-term storage sustainability. This data deposition contains the enriched metadata in both CSV and RDF formats.

Data
The data are available in CSV and RDF Turtle format. Due to their abundance, the HisVis AI tags are only available in the RDF. Please note that at the moment of deposit, the URIs prefixed with https://data.noord-hollandsarchief.nl/ are not resolving and it is unclear if this will be made possible in the future. The UUIDs are however stable and should be able to be used to retrieve the resources in the future.
Almost all resources are modelled in the schema.org vocabulary (https://schema.org), with exception of person observations and reconstructions (cf. roar vocabulary, https://w3id.org/roar), and person names (cf. pnv vocabulary, https://w3id.org/pnv). To indicate the certainty of an AI tag, the rico:certainty property from the rico ontology (https://www.ica.org/standards/RiC/ontology) is used.
Where the schema.org vocabulary is not specific enough, other vocabularies are used to attribute a concept from the AAT (https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/aat/) or GTAA (https://www.beeldengeluid.nl/kennis/kennisthemas/metadata/gemeenschappelijke-thesaurus-audiovisuele-archieven) is attributed using the schema.org/additionalType property.
Only person data (observation and reconstruction) from 'public persons' are included. It may lead to URIs in the report data (via a schema:about property) that do not carry any other information. These can be filled in later (once the person is set to 'public', e.g. through disambiguation).
