opvallend/bijzonder: Ze heeft een collectie van neksteunen die mensen in Ethiopië en Eritrea gebruiken tijdens het reizen. Haar opa heeft indertijd in de marine gezeten en is daarom ook wel vaker in Nederland geweest. Haar oma heeft een collectie ansichtkaarten, dus toen ze voor het eerst in Amsterdam was, herkende ze wel eens dingen van die kaarten. Haar familie heeft haar geholpen om van Ethiopië naar Eritrea naar Italië naar Nederland te reizen. Ze was kort na aankomst in Amsterdam overgeplaatst naar Hardegarijp in Friesland, op deze periode van eerste opvang kijkt ze heel positief terug, mede omdat er niet zo veel vluchtelingen waren en er dus goede begeleiding etcetera voor haar beschikbaar was. Ze verhuisde naar Groningen om te studeren en is na het behalen van haar diploma naar Amsterdam verhuisd en heeft ook nog eens 8 jaar in Lelystad gewoond. Ze is nu getrouwd en woont samen met man in Amsterdam
RADAR-Old (Research on Adolescent Development And Relationships old cohort)
No full textThe Research on Adolescent Development And Relationships-old cohort (RADAR-old) is an ongoing longitudinal study that started in 2002/2003. RADAR-old focuses on the interactions and conflicts of adolescents with parents and peers, their emotional state, personality, identity, and internalizing and externalizing problem behaviour. RADAR-Old investigates the development of 327 participants from early adolescence into young adulthood (currently, data is available upon request from ages 13-28 years old). Additionally, their parent(s), intimate partner (from W7 onwards), sibling, and (best) friend also participated in the study.

Citizenship Acquisition in Canada & Germany

The dataset is based on a total of 42 semi-structured interviews and consists of audio recordings (40), transcripts (41), note files (41), and interview material (7 documents). The difference in numbers is due to one interview taking place via e-mail (thus no recording was made or notes taken) and one interview not being recorded as requested by the interviewee (thus no recording or transcript).
The interviews were conducted with four sets of interviewees: 1. German naturalized citizens (15), 2. Canadian naturalized citizens (15), 3. German citizenship caseworkers (9), 4. three individuals working for the Canadian government, namely one Canadian Member of Parliament (MP), one employee of the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada department, and one office staff member of a Canadian MP. The interviews of set 1 were conducted in the fall of 2021, set 2 in March to August of 2022, set 3 in the fall of 2022 and set 3 between October of 2022 and March 2023. Interviews with German individuals were conducted in German. Interviews with Canadian individuals were conducted in English.
The interview materials include 4 different interview guides (2 in English and 2 in German) with one per set of interviews, and 3 vignettes based on set 1 and utilized in set 2.
A total of 3031 minutes of interviews were recorded. Interviews lasted between 30 minutes to three hours and were conducted in a place chosen by the interviewee either in-person or via Zoom or Webex. This includes but is not limited to cafes, interviewees' homes, the researcher's office space, parks and interviewees' places of work. The interviews in subsets 1 and 2 were conducted in the district of Cologne, Germany. The interviews in subsets 2 and 3 were conducted in Toronto, Canada and from the Netherlands digitally (2).
Based on the interviews with naturalized German citizens (set 1), the researcher extracted 3 real-life vignettes, which were then used as interview material in the conversations with German caseworkers (set 2). They were given these vignettes and asked to react to them.
Every interviewee gave either written or oral consent before being interviewed

Friends in a Cold Climate: Schiedam-6a
No full textJan worked for the municipality of Schiedam. He started his career in 1975 with the Public Works Department. He later moved internally to the mayor's office, which was part of the General Affairs department, General Affairs Secretariat. In this position he had to deal with "exchanges" and city twinning. As far as Schiedam was concerned, this was still in its infancy.
It started with an exchange between the Royal Schiedams Men's Choir Orpheus and a choir in Esslingen. The mayor of Esslingen proposed that Schiedam should join a circle of partner cities. In the 1960s, this proposal was submitted to the municipality of Schiedam, but the then mayor rejected it due to the war history. Years later the request was made again and exchanges were slowly organized. The Schiedam Community Foundation was commissioned to develop this further, which resulted in several exchanges.
It is doubtful to what extent Schiedam really thought about European unification. It seemed that people mainly enjoyed contacts with partner cities, without the deeper philosophy that cities like Esslingen had. They tried to transfer this philosophy to people who participated in exchanges, which was sometimes difficult. Initially, it mainly concerned young people, students, football clubs, choirs and dance clubs, who especially enjoyed going to Slovenia, for example, for a football tournament or to Esslingen for a singing performance.
Schiedam left the circle of partner cities, just as Neath had done earlier. This happened during a difficult period in Schiedam, when the mayor retired in 2006 after 22 years of service. The new mayor, who took over, arbitrarily ended the partner city projects within a year, because he considered them unnecessary and expensive. This decision was made even though long-term contacts with people from partner cities still existed. Jan states that majors and officials come and go. Carefully built contacts often survive the period that an administrator is active, according to Jan. Although he was given another position within the municipality in 2008, he still receives New Year's cards from Vienne
