Digital Visual Identifiers for Sound from Palestine: Exploring Less-Charted Areas in Design Discourse

    No full text
Regardless of their ubiquity, the design of digital visual identifiers for sound and music has been disregarded in published discourse that is instead dominated by covers as printed packages primarily dedicated to Anglo-European contexts and the identity of music albums (rather than EPs or single tracks). My research proposes a shift in focus and brings attention to Palestine. It examines two digital visual identifiers for experimental soundtracks by Palestinian artists – Asma Ghanem’s Homeland Is … (2016) and Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s Contingency (2010) – through a representational analysis with an emphasis on semiotics. These case studies indicate ways that digital visual identifiers for sound can significantly contribute to an otherwise delimited discourse. Moreover, this article impacts the field of design studies by providing groundwork and paving the way for further research.https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17547075.2024.2446753Publishe

Comparative Civil-Military Cooperation Impact on National Security: Options for Lebanon

    No full text
Throughout history, nations have faced a variety of challenges, ranging from crises to civil wars, and economic collapses. Addressing such societal discontent requires strategic governmental intervention. One effective approach involves engaging the military to support civilian needs, a practice commonly referred to as civil-military cooperation. Military personnel have been crucial in crisis, offering both short-term assistance and long-term recovery support. This paper explores the implementation of civil-military cooperation in countries such as Somalia, Rwanda, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. By analyzing these examples, we aim to draw parallels and examine how this strategy has been applied in Lebanon. Specifically, we assess the extent to which civil-military cooperation has contributed to Lebanon’s national security and stability

Shia Mobilization in Lebanon: A Focus on Socioeconomic Grievances and Political Identity in Sectarian Politics

    No full text
Shia mobilization in Lebanon is profoundly interlinked with religious identity and economic grievances, which are both influenced by the sectarian political system of the nation. This thesis investigates how religious and economic mobilization intersect within the Shia Muslim community. The focus of the study is on economic-motivated protests such as the 2015 “You Stink” movement and the 2019 October Revolution, and religious-motivated protests illustrated by the Ashura commemorations and Martyr's Day. The thesis employs a qualitative comparative case study method, assessing how socioeconomic grievances instigate social movements that last in the short run while religious rites sustain collective identity among the Shia Muslims and political influence in the long run. The paper also assimilates comparative insights from the mobilization of Sunni Muslims in Iraq and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. The thesis contends that whereas economic mobilization usually faces difficulties in attaining long-term political transformation, religious mobilization usually lasts longer owing to its entrenched sectarian networks and institutional support. Policy recommendations comprise addressing existing socioeconomic inequalities, nurturing sectarian cooperation, and enhancing the engagement of global financial institutions to promote both economic and political stability in the nation

Quiet Quitting in the Digital Age: The Impact of Technostress and Workload on Emotional Exhaustion leading to Withdrawal, with Supervisory Coaching as a Moderator

    No full text
Emotional Exhaustion has been on the rise as a result of increased workload and technostress in the workplace. The purpose of this research is to explore how emotional exhaustion influences employee withdrawal behaviors both physical and psychological; and whether supervisory coaching moderates this relationship. It also adds to the limited literature on supervisory coaching in business organizations, specifically, in relation to its impact on withdrawal behaviors. To test the hypotheses set for this study, data was gathered through a survey shared via email, WhatsApp and other social media platforms. The data was then analyzed using SPSS. Results show that technostress and workload both increase emotional exhaustion leading to increased withdrawal behaviors. Also, supervisory coaching moderates the relationship between emotional exhaustion and physical withdrawal but not psychological withdrawal behaviors. Managerial implications, limitations and future research direction are also addressed

Molecular Docking Analysis of GSTP1 Variants with Paclitaxel and JNK: Exploring Chemoresistance and Detoxification in Cancer

individualGSTP1 I105V polymorphism's impact on detoxification of paclitaxel and chemoresistance is studied through molecular docking and computational modelling. The interactions between Isoleucine (Ile105) and Paclitaxel showed a higher binding affinity than that of the Valine (Val105) variant, leading to higher enzymatic activity and decreased intracellular drug levels. Furthermore, docking simulations with glutathione (GSH) revealed similar interactions levels between the two variants. Also, protein-protein docking of GSTP1 with the JNK signaling protein with ClusPro, HDOCK, and HADDOCK servers, indicated negligible binding differences between variants. The findings can hint how GSTP1 polymorphisms can potentially play a role in changing the levels of hematological and neurological toxicities during paclitaxel chemotherapy. These results highlight the relevance of GSTP1 genotyping in chemotherapy dosage optimization and dose delay

Motivated & Engaged: Leveraging Gamification to Reduce Employee Burnout

    No full text
Purpose – Gamification has emerged as a strategic tool to enhance engagement and foster collaboration within non-game contexts. This study aims to develop and validate a structural framework examining how gamification mediates the relationship between employee engagement, motivation, and burnout within the Lebanese workplace context. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative approach was employed using a structured questionnaire targeting employees aged 18 to 64 across multiple sectors in Lebanon. Data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Measurement and structural models were assessed to evaluate reliability, validity, and path significance. Mediation analysis was performed to test the interaction effect of gamification. Findings – The results confirmed that employee engagement and motivation are both negatively associated with burnout (β = -0.7866, p < 0.01). Importantly, gamification was found to significantly moderate the engagement-burnout relationship (interaction term β = -0.2529, p < 0.05), indicating that individuals with high engagement levels experience significantly lower burnout in the presence of gamified elements. The overall model explained 71% of the variance in burnout (R² = 0.710), reflecting a strong predictive power. Research limitations/implications – The sample was collected using snowball sampling and self-reported measures, which may introduce response bias. Additionally, the current level of gamification adoption in Lebanese organizations remains low, potentially affecting generalizability. Practical implications – The findings offer actionable insights for HR professionals and organizational leaders seeking to mitigate employee burnout. Gamification can serve as a non-monetary motivational lever to boost engagement, enhance productivity, and reduce turnover-related costs. Originality/value – This research adds to the limited empirical evidence on gamification in emerging markets by validating its moderating role in reducing burnout. The study advocates for gamification as a viable tool in employee experience strategies, particularly in resource-constrained environments
