Learner Engagement and Motivation in The Lebanese Middle School Arabic Classroom
In many Lebanese private schools, students are more frequently exposed to and encouraged to use English or French across academic subjects, often leading to a diminished perception of Arabic as an intellectually or socially valuable language. This dynamic can negatively impact learners’ motivation, engagement, and identity formation around the Arabic language. The study explored the classroom factors, and the levels of engagement and motivation middle school students experience in the Arabic class. The findings of this study offer meaningful implications for Arabic language instruction, particularly in contexts where Arabic, though native, may hold less sociolinguistic prestige compared to other languages such as English or French. The strong predictive role of Subject Perception (SP) and Teacher–Student Relationship (TSR) in this study suggests that when students view Arabic as interesting, useful, and meaningful—and when they feel emotionally supported by their Arabic teacher—they are more likely to be motivated and actively participate in class. Therefore, Arabic instruction should not only focus on linguistic competence but also aim to reframe learners’ perceptions of Arabic by connecting the language to culturally relevant, personally engaging content and affirming its contemporary relevance. Teachers play a crucial role in this process by modeling positive attitudes toward Arabic, creating emotionally supportive classrooms, and promoting intrinsic motivation through innovative, student-centered teaching approaches
Who am I? Teachers’ Identity Vis a Vis Multifaceted Crises: Mixed-Method Study
In crisis-affected situations, teachers serve as instructors and frontline responders, managing multiple tasks under difficult conditions. In Lebanon, recent political, economic, safety, and health crises have affected how teachers conceptualize their identity. This, in turn, can affect their readiness to deal with challenges, their effectiveness in the classroom, and the quality of education. This study aims to understand how teachers conceptualize their identity vis-à-vis Lebanon’s multifaceted crisis, to better identify teachers’ needs. The study uses mixed methods (questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis) to examine the perceptions of teachers in 7 semi-private and private schools around the country. Findings show that most teachers had a positive view of themselves (mean = 4.34/5) as well as their role within the school community and among its main stakeholders. However, interview data revealed a more complex picture of teachers’ identity in relation to their sense of self, their families, society, the government, and the global ecosystem. In particular, teachers reported feeling abandoned by the government and needing more support from the State. The study underscores how a better understanding of teachers' identities can inform the support they need and improve education in crisis affected contexts
The Influence of Individual and Organizational Factors on Performance Appraisal Output
The significance of employee performance assessment within the strategic human
resources management framework is underscored by recent research, which also
outlines the function of organizational context. As a result, the study offers a conceptual
framework for employee performance evaluation that takes contextual elements into
account and emphasizes the need for human resources management. Emerging
literature underscores the critical influence of organizational context on employee
performance appraisal practices (e.g., DeNisi, 2008). The study proposes a model
where organizational culture, communication style, and employee role clarity influence
appraisal outcomes. Information will be gathered via a survey of cross-sector workers
in Lebanon. This work is among the few that consider several contextual aspects along
with some of their combinations. To ensure maximum variety in a short amount of time,
250 employees will be sampled from various departments, age groups, genders, and
levels of expertise. Structured questionnaires will be used to gather data. After
gathering questionnaire responses, the data will be analysed and entered into SPSS.
After that, the data will be analysed using regression techniques to test the effect of
individual and organizational factors on performance appraisal outcomes
Therapeutic Impact of P-PENT, P-HEX and 5CLSS (IV) Platinum (IV) complexes on Acute Myeloid Leukemia in vitro and in vivo
Platinum (II)-based complexes, such as cisplatin and carboplatin, are widely known for their
anticancer activity against various types of cancers. While resistance has limited their efficacy, a
growing interest in platinum (IV) complexes has recently grown to overcome this challenge. The
present study investigates the anti-leukemic potential of three platinum (IV) complexes, PPENT,
P-HEX, and 5CLSS(IV) in vitro and in vivo. The cytotoxic activity of P-PENT, P-HEX,
and 5CLSS(IV) against WEHI-3 cells was assessed using MTS-PMS kit. All three complexes
caused significant cytotoxicity with IC50 values of 0.12, 0.070, and 0.12 μM for 5CLSS(IV), PPENT,
and P-HEX, respectively. A significant increase in ROS production was also observed upon cell treatment with the complexes. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that treatment with
any of the platinum (IV) complexes induced apoptosis. Western blots analysis confirmed the
involvement of an intrinsic apoptotic pathway (BAX/BCL2, procaspase 3, full length PARP )and
inhibition of the MAPK pathway (P-ERK/ERK) . An advanced and early-stage leukemic mice
models were established using WEHI-3 cells inoculation. Initiating treatment of animals 10 days
post inoculation (advanced stage) showed improved mice survival with any of the platinum IV complexes treatment mainly at the 5 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg doses. While no additional benefit was
observed with increasing the dose to 15 mg/kg, P-HEX at the 5 mg/kg dose exhibited the best mice survival among all groups including the positive controls (cytarabine or cispaltin). Initiating
animal treatment 4 days post inoculation (early stage) using P-PENT or P-HEX at 5 mg/kg once
or twice per week revealed similar engagement of animal survival rate compared to negative
control. Both complexes significantly reduced spleen weight and CD11B expression compared to
untreated leukemic controls. Collectively, these findings suggest that all platinum (IV)
complexes, especially P-HEX exhibit promising anti-leukemic activity in vitro and in vivo,
highlighting their potential as effective therapeutic agents against AML
Co-optation and Counter-narratives: Unpacking the Survival Strategies of Lebanese Political Elites post-October 17
This thesis examines how Lebanon’s political elites have employed strategies of co-optation and counter-narratives to survive the wide-scale uprisings in Lebanon on 17 October 2019. It develops a nuanced approach to understand how political elites engage with contention in ways that are not directly repressive but strategically narrated in their discourses. This contributes to further insights in the field of social movements that uncover how power-sharing systems operate in the face of contention.
Drawing on a multi-phased analysis conducted between October 2019 and May 2022, the thesis examines the rhetoric and discourse of political elites that aim to delegitimize the uprisings, thereby reducing mass mobilization, increasing sectarian tensions, and reconsolidating power within the system. It shows that the co-optation of Lebanese political elites went beyond the adoption of the protesters' demands to include purposeful irresponsibility, political withdrawal performances, strategic ambiguity in discourse, and the scripting of alternative crises. Simultaneously, it reveals that counter-narratives focused on sectarian populism, securitization arguments, a politicization of the protests, and foreign conspiracy theories, which served to delegitimize the uprisings and shift public discourse.
It examines statements from interviews, social media posts, and speeches of Lebanese politicians such as Samir Geagea, Samy Gemayel, Gebran Bassil, Hassan Nasrallah, Saad Hariri, and Walid Jumblatt who represent some of the chief figures of the main sectarian communities in Lebanon. Through an extensive discourse analysis, this thesis demonstrates how these strategies reinforced exclusionary pluralism and elite entrenchment in the system.
This thesis assesses the results of the May 2022 parliamentary elections to gauge the success of Lebanese political elites’ strategies of co-optation and counter-narratives. Ultimately, this thesis contributes to an understanding of the political forces that shape contention in Lebanon’s consociational model, thereby shedding light on the entrenched structures that protesters attempt to change
A qualitative study on deaf individuals’ access to health knowledge and services in Lebanon
Objectives
This study seeks to assess the situation of Lebanese deaf individuals who use sign language, explore their understanding of common pathologies and how they acquire health knowledge, identify the challenges they encounter within the healthcare system, and gather their proposed solutions for improving health communication and services.
Study design
Focus group design.
Methods
A focus group of 10 deaf individuals was conducted. The discussions were facilitated by the research team, with a Lebanese sign language interpreter present to provide real-time translation and ensure meaningful and inclusive dialogue. Audio recordings were transcribed and coded.
Results
Findings revealed significant challenges pertaining to health literacy, patient-physician communication, limited access to sign language interpreters in healthcare settings, inadequate health information in accessible formats, difficulty in navigating the healthcare system, and lack of awareness among healthcare providers about the needs of the deaf community, leading to impaired autonomy and lack of trust.
Conclusions
Potential solutions include enhancing the accessibility of health information and patient-physician communication, especially through sign language interpretation, implementing logistical accommodations to facilitate navigation through the healthcare system, such as extended appointments, text-based booking systems, and virtual tours. Additionally, updating governmental policies and insurance guidelines, and incorporating cultural sensitivity training into medical education and practice, can significantly improve their experience. Government initiatives involving the deaf civil community must be implemented to address the structural and cultural barriers to accessible and equitable healthcare.Publishe

Emerging tensions in selling sustainable solutions: a future research agenda
In this article, we examine how the transition to selling sustainable solutions creates tensions within the sales organization and across associated organizations, including suppliers and customers. Specifically, we examine the existing literature that has focused on how tensions arise within an organization during times of change and use this lens to identify potential challenges facing the sales function when tasked with selling sustainable solutions. We analyze how tensions manifest within the sales function (vertical tensions) and between sales and other departments, as well as between suppliers and buyers (horizontal tensions). The article demonstrates that sustainability tensions, unlike other literature streams, are an underexplored topic in the B2B sales literature, presenting avenues for future research. Building on a review of the literature on sustainability in other disciplines, we develop a research agenda that can inform future sales research on selling sustainable solutions. The identified set of research questions was evaluated by 40 academics and 30 business professionals from around the world, and a prioritized set of research questions relevant to both academic and practitioner audiences is presented. We discuss the theoretical implications of our research and offer some implications for practitioners.Publishe
Unlocking life satisfaction: the impact of self-image congruence on consumers’ life satisfaction through brand love and brand addiction
Purpose
This study aims to explore how self-image congruence influences life satisfaction, focusing on understanding how brand love and brand addiction mediate these connections. Examining these complex relationships aims to contribute insights into the complex interplay between personal identity, consumer–brand relationships and overall life satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach
Data was collected from 798 US consumers. The relationships between the variables were evaluated using structural equation modeling.
Findings
The results indicate that ideal self-image congruence negatively affects consumers’ life satisfaction, while actual self-image, brand love and brand addiction positively contribute to life satisfaction. The study reveals partial mediation of brand addiction between actual/ideal self-image congruence and life satisfaction, but not brand love. In addition, brand love and brand addiction serve as positive serial mediators between actual self-image congruence and life satisfaction, as well as ideal self-image congruence and life satisfaction.
Research limitations/implications
This study offers several valuable contributions to the extant literature by showing how actual and ideal image congruence impact life satisfaction. It also enriches the self-image congruence literature by differentiating the effects of actual and self-image congruence on life satisfaction. This research offers a new understanding of the mechanism of self-image congruence’s effect on consumers’ life satisfaction through the mediation of consumer–brand relationships.
Practical implications
The study provides insights for researchers and marketing managers and ascertains the significant role self-image congruence may play in consumers’ well-being. It also provides managerial guidelines on humanizing consumer–brand relationships to enhance consumers’ life satisfaction.
Originality/value
These results provide a new outlook on the influence of self-image congruence on consumers’ life satisfaction. The study contributes to the existing literature by exploring the mediating role of consumers’ self-image congruence on life satisfaction through the lenses of consumer–brand relationships and addictive behavior, enriching our understanding of these complex dynamics.Publishe
