No full textThis patent manuscript contains the details of the regulations put in place to manage the mining and forestry operations in the region of Carinthia in the year 1553. It begins with a statement establishing the authority of Ferdinand von Habsburg [1503-1564], who ruled over the Archduchy of Austria and ordered these regulations to be drawn together (fol. 1r-2v). There follows a series of 208 numbered articles. These take into account a broad number of factors concerning the manner in which mines were to be established, but also include the rights for fishing and hunting on lands designated for mining and forestry (fol. 4v), as well as arrangements for the processing of highly valuable mining products such as silver (fol. 81r). This section of the manuscript concludes with a closing statement (fol. 85v) and a complete reference list of articles (fol. 86r-91v). The manuscript was purchased in Rome in 1952.Online Since: 2020-06-1

No full textThis composite manuscript is rich in material; it contains numerous registers, compilations, and excerpts of astronomical and especially geographic-historical content taken from a great variety of sources and written down by the Swiss universal scholar Aegidius Tschudi (1505−1572) from Glarus in the period after 1550. The greatest part of the notes in this volume, collected, compiled and ordered with great diligence by Tschudi, concern what today is France (Gaul with its tribes, provinces, cities, mountains, islands, etc.). Especially noteworthy are the maps Tschudi has drawn of varies parts of Gaul (pp. 706−723). Among them are a map of Franche-Comté (pp. 714/715) and of the western parts of Switzerland (p. 717/718). After Tschudi’s death in 1572, the three sheaves which make up the current volume remained in the possession of his family, and from 1652 until 1768 they were held at Gräpplang Castle near Flums. In February 1768 they came to the Abbey Library of St. Gall, which purchased the Glarus scholar’s estate of manuscripts. In St. Gall, the three sheaves, which were listed as numbers 59, 43 and 44 in the auction catalog of 1767, were bound together with several more leaves into the current volume between 1768 and 1782.Online Since: 2017-09-2

No full textThe Housebook of the Lords of Hallwil, also known as Turnierbuch, is a combination of family chronicle, tournament book and book of heraldry. This paper manuscript from the second half of the 16th century probably replaces an older copy. On the inside of the cover are found the large coats of arms of Burkhart von Hallwil and his two wives Judith von Anwil and Margaretha von Löwenberg. Pp. 4-10 contain a late version of the poem Ring von Hallwil, a saga about the endangerment and saving of the inheritance of the Hallwils. On pp. 11-17 there follow texts about family history and then a second, older version of the poem Ring von Hallwil (pp. 19-21). After a number of empty pages, there are six empty crests (pp. 48-50), meant for the three brothers Thüring I von Hallwil († 1386) und Katharina von Wolfurt, Walter V († after 1370) and Herzlaude von Tengen, “Hemann” (Johannes IV, † 1386) and Anna vom Hus. On p. 51 there is a view of the ancestral home of the Hallwil family. It is followed by pictures of Caspar (p. 54) and Burkhart von Hallwil (p. 55), scenes from tournaments (pp. 56-59), and images relating to the Ring von Hallwil (pp. 60-66). At the end of the manuscript, there are more coats of arms of the Lords of Hallwil and their wives (pp. 68-96), the last ones only sketched out but not completed (pp. 97-118). The manuscript was donated to the Swiss National Museum in 1907 by Count Walther von Hallwil, the last occupant of the castle, and his wife Wilhelmine. No full textThe impulse for writing the original model of this text, Vadian’s “Kleinere Chronik der Äbte” (1544-46) (VadSlg Ms. 44), came from Heinrich Bullinger and Johannes Stumpf; they wanted to make use of Vadian’s knowledge of the history of St. Gall for the Eidgenössische Chronik (1547/48) that appeared under Stumpf’s name. The chronicle consists of three parts: the first part is about Saint Gall; the second part is a history of the monastery and of the city of St. Gall; the third part gives a historical-topographical description of the city of St. Gall and of Lake Constance. Wolfgang Fechter produced two copies thereof in 1549. The illustrations are by Caspar Hagenbuch.Online Since: 2018-12-1

No full textCod. Sang. 1398 is one of eight fragment volumes (that is, volumes that contain exclusively fragments) of the Abbey Library of St. Gall. Between 1774 and 1785, the St. Gall monks Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger (1756–1823) and Ildefons von Arx (1755–1833) detached numerous fragments from bindings in which they had served for centuries as pastedowns, flyleaves, spine linings, and endleaf guards. At an advanced age, Ildefons von Arx had the fragments bound in eight thematically-organized bindings and dedicated these in 1822 to his friend Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger. Chiefly in the twentieth century, researchers found additional, small fragments in bindings, from which they were then removed and added to the existing fragment volumes or into the collection of fragments. Before 1875, 121 folios were removed from Cod. Sang. 1398 and bound in a separate volume, Cod. Sang. 1398b. (The old volume with the remaining folios received the shelfmark Cod. Sang. 1398a). From 2003 to 2004 the extensive fragment volume Cod. Sang. 1398b was disbound for conservation reasons. The fragments were rebound (in the same sequence) in 18 folders (“Ganzpapierbroschuren”). The new, now authoritative pagination begins with 1 in each folder and includes only the fragments (and not the empty paper leaves). To be cited (for example): St. Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. Sang. 1398b.1, pp. 1-2 (= Cod. Sang. 1398b, Folder 1, pages 1-2). The eighteenth folder of Cod. Sang. 1398b contains fragments from biblical texts (II Mcc, Vetus Latina: Dn).Online Since: 2024-05-3

The manuscript consists of three parts – one of parchment (ff. 1-27) and two of paper (ff. 28-39 and 40-47) – which were bound together probably in 1548, as indicated by the date printed on the front cover.
