No full textTranscriptions, prepared by Mauritius Enk (1538-1575) of the Abbey of St. Gall, of lectures about the Holy Scripture (Isagoge in sacram scripturam) presented by the Spanish Jesuit Johannes Marianus (Juan de Mariana, 1536–1624). This text is on pp. 33–269. In addition, the volume contains excerpts from Augustine (pp. 19–21 from letter 28 to Jerome, with an alphabetical index on pp. 1–12; pp. 27–28 from the Confessiones), as well as a short treatise about confession before the Eucharist, Num confessio necessaria sit ante sumptionem Eucharistiae (pp. 270–271, not written by Enk).Online Since: 2016-06-2

No full textTesteriano denotes catechism manuscripts in a pictographic script attributed to the Franciscan friar and missionary Jacobo de Testera (16th century). Writing had already developed in 12th century Central America as a mixture of ideograms, pictograms and phonetic symbols, but the original handwritten witnesses thereof were destroyed in the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century. In order to communicate with the indigenous population, Christian missionaries later adopted this writing system, but they invented many symbols since the goal was to communicate a new, Christian content. For instance, three crowned heads represent the Trinity and thus God, while two crowned heads with key and sword represent the apostles Peter and Paul. The manuscript is read from left to right across both pages; different parts are separated by decorative vertical vignettes. The manuscript contains several short prayers (among them pp. 1v-2r Persignum, 2v-4r Ave Maria, 4v-8r Credo) and a long prayer (pp. 27v-35r) which represents a repetition of the Christian doctrine.Online Since: 2015-06-2

No full textThis composite manuscript consists of three volumes and seven different codicological units. It transmits more than 30 works, Athanasian as well as pseudo-Athanasian, often in several copies. The texts were written in the 16th century in Northern Italy, in Switzerland or in Germany, perhaps on the initiative of Theodore Beza, in order for Peter Felckmann to prepare the first edition of the works of Athanasius in Greek, which was published in 1600-1601 by Commelin in Heidelberg. The manuscript preserves only late texts, but it is of great historical importance due to its status as the model for the editio princeps of Athanasius’ works. It is the source of all the textual variants identified by Felckmann, that were then taken up by Montfaucon in 1686 and passed on by Migne.Online Since: 2019-06-1

No full textThis volume contains lecture notes by the St. Gall monk Mauritius Enk (1538−1575) on lectures on the topic De eucharistia. The lectures took place between 27 January and 11 May 1568 at the Jesuit College de Clermont in Paris. The volume also contains the sentences of the Jesuit Professor Johannes Maldonatus (professor of theology at the College de Clermont 1565−1569), as well as some of Mauritius Enk’s mottos, such as on the inside cover: Min Hoffnung und Vertrauwen / will ich allzit uf Gott bauwen. This manuscript is the second of three volumes of lectures notes in chronological order by Mauritius Enk that belong together (vol. 1: Cod.Sang. 1122, Annotationes on the Gospel of Matthew by a Dr. Sorbanicus and Johannes Maldonatus’s commentary on the fourth book of sentences by Peter Lombard, from 15 July 1567 to 27 Januar 1568; vol. 3: Cod. No full textThe Matriculation Register of the Basel Rectorate, recorded in manuscript form from 1460 to 2000, contains annual information notices added by each successive rector as well as lists of enrolled students. The rich book decoration in the first three volumes is particularly notable. The work of 3 centuries, it is easily datable due to the chronogical order in which it was added and thus provides a welcome demonstration of the art of miniature painting in Basel.Online Since: 2010-12-2

No full textThis martirologio-inventario (an annal followed by an inventory of property) of the Church of S. Stefano in Torre in the Blenio Valley in Ticino, was written in 1568 at the request of the vicini (the original members of the municipal corporate body) of Torre and Grumo, in order to replace the older version. It contains the list of annuali, i.e., of the annual celebrations for the death days of deceased members of the Church, the inventory of movable and immovable property, of the monacharia and of the luminaria, that is, the requisites for illuminating the church. No full textThis is the oldest copy of Gian Travers’ drama “Joseph”, performed in Zuoz in 1534. The manuscript was produced three years after the death of Travers and makes use of spellings that were no longer in use at the time the copy was made. The scribe is Conradin Planta, probably a relative: Gian Travers was married to Anna Planta. The manuscript is bound incorrectly: the text begins with ff. 9-13, then there is a leaf missing, f. 14, f. 1, f. 5, f. 3, f. 4, f. 6, f. 2, f. 15, a missing leaf, f. 7, f. 16. Folio 8r, originally the final page, contains a cautionary poem; f. 8v was left blank. The front flyleaves are made of a large parchment sheet, originally from a 12th century parchment manuscript with a text by Constantine the African, De febribus, chap. 3-5.Online Since: 2017-12-1
