    Replication data for: A conjoint analysis of landholder preferences for reward-based land-management contracts in Kapingazi watershed, Eastern Mount Kenya

    Unsustainable land-use decisions and agricultural practices have become the key drivers of deteriorating watershed services in developing countries. However, landholders may have little or no incentives to take these impacts into account in their decision-making process. In recent years, reward-based provision of environmental services has emerged as an important market-based incentive for motivating landholders to adopt environmentally friendly land-use changes and agricultural practices. In this regard, for instance, the Pro-Poor Rewards for Environmental Services in Africa (PRESA) project has emerged as a large network to support and facilitate reward mechanisms in Africa. However, in many African rural settings, little is known about landholder attitudes and preferences related to the alternative land-management schemes. Using locally identified sets of six key land-management attributes, this paper applies conjoint methods to evaluate landholder preferences towards alternative land-management schemes aimed at enhancing the provision of watershed services i n the River Kapingazi catchment in central Kenya. Data were collected from primary sources through focus groups and a questionnaire based conjoint survey. Three conjoint models were used; a traditional conjoint ratings model, a binary logit model, and an ordered logit model. Results from the focus groups indicated that shortage of water for both domestic use and irrigation was perceived as the most acute environmental problem in the area. Deforestation, poor river bank management and agricultural practices were identified as the major causes of the problem. Results from conjoint models show that the three principal attributes influencing landholderâs ratings and probability of adopting the proposed land management options were âsize of land area to be committedâ, âlength of contract periodâ, and âgranting or prohibiting rights to harvest environmental products from the committed landâ. Thus, these attributes should be the focal points in designing land-management contract for watershed services in the study area

    This guide is based on the results of a research project (Divakaran, 2011) conducted with the aid of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) based in Nairobi, Kenya, and regional and national partners in Kenya. The research was feeding into a project entitled: ‘Creating an Evergreen Agriculture in Africa: Scaling-up Conservation Agriculture with Trees for Improved Livelihoods and Environmental Resilience in Eastern and Southern Africa’. ICRAF was the main implementing institution responsible for technical, administrative and financial management of the wider project and it was funded by IFAD. The overall objective of the wider project was to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Eastern and Southern Africa while sustaining the natural resource base by promoting the conservation agriculture and agroforestry practices

    Replication Data for: Agroforestry governance for operationalising the landscape approach: connecting conservation and farming actors

    The expansion and intensifcation of agriculture as well as the associated land clearing are threatening both biodiversity and human wellbeing in tropical areas. Implementing agroforestry systems through a landscape approach has a strong potential for integrating nature conservation objectives into agricultural systems. A key challenge for implementing the landscape approach is that political processes and conservation initiatives operate in ‘silos’, being largely disconnected from farmers and local key agents responsible for tree governance. In this study we brought together diferent stakeholders in facilitated, structured focus discussions to analyse the role of actor groups in tree governance. We used social network analysis to quantitatively and qualitatively analyse agroforestry governance networks and actor interactions related to information exchange, fnance fows, and regulation. The analyses were conducted at national, sub-national and local levels in four countries: Honduras, Peru, Indonesia, and Uganda. Using trees on farms as a boundary object enabled all participants to bridge common interests and illuminate some of the constraints and opportunities of local governance systems while overcoming institutional and ideological barriers. The quantitative results of the social network analysis identify a strong density of actor linkages. Despite this density, results indicate incoherent and fragmented actor networks undermining the support for agroforestry on all levels. Nevertheless, existing processes related to fnance, information, and regulation can be better aligned to ensure an efective implementation and mainstreaming of agroforestry for biodiversity conservation. Building social capital among key actors on both national and local levels can reveal a strong potential for adaptive learning processes mainstreaming agroforestry as essential component of “good farming” and integrating incentive systems for a coherent and efective agroforestry governance. We conclude that redirecting both public and private funding towards continuous seed-funding for the facilitation of these integrated learning processes can transform landscape management and at the same time reduce transaction costs

    Biophysical baseline assessment in eastern Rwanda using the LDSF

    The LDSF was developed by World Agroforestry (ICRAF) in response to the need for consistent field methods and indicator frameworks to assess ecosystem health across landscapes. The LDSF measures multiple key indicators of land and soil health in order to understand drivers of degradation, as well as monitor changes over time (http://landscapeportal.org/blog/2015/03/25/the-land-degradation-surveillance-framework-ldsf/). The framework was applied within the Regreening Africa project: https://regreeningafrica.org/ and has been applied in projects across the global tropics. This project will benefit from existing data in the LDSF database, while at the same time contributing to these critically important global datasets through on-going data collection. This project contains data collected from two 100-km2 LDSF sites in eastern Rwanda in September and November 2018.     Upper-Trusha farmer livelihood study, Naivasha, Kenya

    In the Lake Naivasha basin, Kenya, there is an example of long running Payment for Environmental Services (PES) project, which received some private sector funding sporadically during the past ten years. The project had both environmental and socio-economical aims: to lessen soil erosion and sediment/fertilizer loads to Lake Naivasha, meanwhile educating the land user, i.e. farmers, to gain higher yields by more sustainable farming methods. The more sustainable farming methods were thought to have the potential to produce livelihood improvement to the poorest farmers. According to farmer testimonies, the land erosion has reduced and the farmer livelihoods through better income had also improved significantly. Both of these positive outcomes are primarily from training that is included as an essential part of the PES project. Although the socio-economic outcomes are very positive, there seems to be a lack of evidence for the environmental outcomes of the PES project. In addition, even though there is some little inputs to the PES project from flower farms downstream, i.e. the private sector, currently the most important contributions to this project come from an international NGO, the WWF

    Trees provide livelihood support functions and environmental services that contribute to the multifunctionality of landscapes. The presence or absence of trees is influenced by the interactions between ecological, social-economic and cultural elements. The role of gender in land use perceptions and changes involving trees have received little attention. In Africa, gender differentiated access, use and decision-making related to trees are common features. Divergent control and access to resources by men and women are likely to influence their perceptions and preferences for trees in the landscape. This paper discusses the results of an assessment of men's and women's appreciation of trees in Kapchorwa District, on the slopes of Mount Elgon in Uganda. While men and women were found to have differences in their access to tree products, decision-making powers and agroforestry practices, their land use preferences and perceptions of environmental services were similar. The paper provides recommendations on community forest management, agroforestry programmes and conservation agreements

    Baseline assessment of soil and land health indicators within the 'Drylands Transform' and 'Drylands Restore' sites in Kenya and Uganda using the LDSF

    These data were collected within the research projects 'Achieving the SDGs in East African drylands: Pathways and challenges towards a social-ecological transformation of landscapes, livestock and livelihoods (Drylands Transform)' and 'Management and restoration towards healthy rangelands in East Africa (Drylands Restore)' led by SLU and funded by the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development - Formas. The data were collected using the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) methodology developed by ICRAF (http://landscapeportal.org/blog/2015/03/25/the-land-degradation-surveillance-framework-ldsf/). This dataset contains LDSF field data from five LDSF sites - three in Kenya (Chepareria, Kalama and Lokiriama) and two in Uganda (Matany and Rupa) - totalling 778 LDSF plots. It also contains the predictions using MIR Spectroscopy for 1515 Topsoil (0-20cm) and Subsoil (20-50cm) samples for eleven soil variables, including soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and pH
