Replication Data for: Early survival and growth of Allanblackia stuhlmannii (Clusiaceae): a threatened tropical rainforest tree of high economic value in Tanzania
Rural households living in tropical ecosystems depend
heavily on forest trees for valuable nontimber forest
products that are, however, undergoing unsustainable
harvesting. This study assessed early survival and
growth of Allanblackia stuhlmannii (Clusiaceae), a nontimber
tree species endemic to Tanzania. A total of 400
seedlings sourced from twenty elite female trees were
planted in two adjacent locations. Data were collected
over 59 months for survival, height and root collar
diameter. Seedling survival at 59 months was significantly
different between Emau and Shebomeza, being on
average ~11% higher in Shebomeza. However, survival
of the progenies of each female tree at 59 months was
not significantly different. Overall, mean RCD (range:
6.8–59.7 mm) and height (range: 17.1–274.4 cm)
were positively correlated (r = 0.84, P < 0.001). The
correlations in heights of individuals between 17 and
59, and 23 and 59 months were positive (r = 0.34
versus 0.53, respectively). Results also suggested that if
growth rate is related to ontogeny from juvenile to
adult, then the progenies of ten female trees that have
shown consistently higher growth rates may flower and
fruit earlier than other progenies. Future planting for
conservation of this threatened, overharvested tree
species can therefore be based on data gathered from
these field genebanks
Growth and site variables in large plots of three agroforestry species in the Peruvian Amazon
The data set consists annualized mean monthly increments in large measurements plots of each of the three species, together with the site (environmental) data for each plot. Each plot consisted of two trees of each of 200 open-pollinated families of each species (established as part of a randomized complete block progeny test). All plots are located in Ucayali region, Peruvian Amazon
Biophysical baseline assessment within the KCEP-CRAL action areas in Kenya, using the LDSF
These data were collected within the Kenya Cereal Enhancement Programme-Climate Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods (KCEP-CRAL) Window. This study was conducted within the action sites of the Kenya Cereal Enhancement Programme-Climate Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods (KCEP-CRAL) Window, which is a programme supported by the Government of Kenya and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) within the Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme (ASAP). The project assessed key indicators of land and soil health in order to understand drivers of degradation, and monitor changes over time using the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) methodology (http://landscapeportal.org/blog/2015/03/25/the-land-degradation-surveillance-framework-ldsf/). The LDSF provides a field protocol for measuring indicators of the "health" of an ecosystem.
The LDSF was developed by the World Agroforestry (ICRAF) in response to the need for consistent field methods and indicator frameworks to assess land health in landscapes. The framework has been applied in projects across the global tropics, and is currently one of the largest land health databases globally with more than 30,000 observations, shared at http://landscapeportal.org. This project will benefit from existing data in the LDSF database, while at the same time contributing to these critically important global datasets through on-going data collection. Earth Observation (EO) data will be combined with the LDSF framework to develop the outputs for the project, including land degradation and soil health.

Water Efficient Alternative Crops for Sustainable Agriculture along the Tarim Basin: A Comparison of the Economic Potentials of Apocynum pictum, Chinese Red Date and Cotton in Xinjiang, China
This study explores a paradigm of sustainable land use in the oases along the Tarim River of northwest China, where a fragile, semi-arid riparian ecosystem is being damaged by excessive land and water use for agriculture, especially for the growing of cotton. The reliance of agriculture on water-demanding cash crops in this region poses a grave threat to survival of the natural Tugai vegetation in the area and to the long-term sustainability of the region. We explored the hypothesis that the species Apocynum pictum (A. pictum), known as Lop-Kendir by locals, and the Chinese red date (Zyzyphus jujube) may act as sustainable crop substitutes for the region, thereby replacing the widely distributed cash crop of cotton that has high water demands. Therefore, we investigated current utilization and cost-revenue structure of these two alternative plants and compared the results to cotton. Three natural resource management types of A. pictum were both identified in the wild and cultivation, with cost-revenue analysis carried out for each. The results show that all three types of institutional arrangements of natural resources, which are namely open access, ranching and farming, were present in our study and at various levels for A. pictum. A. pictum farming costs 16,250.25 yuan/ha, generates 49,014.45 yuan/ha of revenue from raw materials and brings a profit of 32,764.2 yuan/ha, which is the highest of all three cash crops compared. The Chinese government encourages Chinese red date plantations with a “Grain for green” campaign in the Tarim Basin with this plant being more profitable than cotton, which could serve to diversify the region’s agriculture. We conclude that A. pictum offers opportunities for the restoration of vegetation in riparian ecosystems on salinized sites under the arid conditions of the Tarim Basin. Furthermore, it can serve as a viable land-use alternative to cotton for cash crop agriculture, as it may generate a certain income in the form of tea and fibers as well as fodder for livestock
