Land and Soil Health Assessment in the Central Africa Humid Tropics Transect (CAFHUT) Sentinel Landscape
The LDSF was carried out at two-100 km2 sites within the Central Africa Humid Tropics Transect (CAFHUT) Sentinel Landscape: Etiolomo and Ayos in Cameroon. Field teams were trained by Bertin Takoutsing and field surveys were completed in April 2015.
The LDSF is a spatially stratified, randomized sampling design, developed to provide a biophysical baseline at landscape level and a monitoring and evaluation framework for assessing processes of land degradation and effectiveness of rehabilitation measures over time.
Measured variables include: land cover, tree and shrub densities, tree biodiversity, erosion prevalence, infiltration capacity, along with an assessment of impact to habitat and occurrence of soil conservation structures. Soil samples were also collected (320 top (0-20 cm) and sub (20-50 cm) soil samples per site) and were processed in Burkina Faso. Processed samples were shipped to Nairobi and subjected to infrared spectroscopy and wet chemistry analysis. These combined data sets will be used to assess soil and ecosystem health for the landscape in more detail

Despite the central role that farmers play as agricultural producers in developing countries, they are often inadequately served by research, extension and advisory services. Extension approaches such as the farmer-to-farmer extension (F2F) approach were developed to improve service to farmers, but little is known about how this approach is being used in Cameroon. This paper examines the experiences of organizations using the F2F extension approach. Specifically, the study characterizes and assesses F2F extension approaches in Cameroon to determine which practices are most effective in different circumstances. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 24 selected organizations in seven regions of the country. The F2F extension approach in Cameroon is used by farmer organizations as well as
national and international non-profit organizations. Neither governmental services nor private sector companies use this approach. Those organizations using F2F extension had on average five field staff (FS), and mainly targeted farmer groups.
Fifty-eight percent of organizations interviewed had one woman or no women among their field staff. Though respondents stated that their organizations were using many different extension approaches, in addition to the F2F approach, 41 percent identified F2F as the most effective method. The main sources of technical information for FS were personal reading, information exchanged during seminars and workshops, staff members’ own experiences and research institutes.
Field staff were in charge of capacity development and follow-up of lead farmers (LFs). On the basis of mutually agreed upon criteria, LFs were usually selected jointly by FS and the community. According to the organizations interviewed, individual FS were working with 17 LFs on average, and the latter were training approximately four groups, each with about 43 members, in addition to 48 individual farmers outside of these groups. These LFs were considered an extension of FS in their communities and usually offered their services on a voluntary basis.
Some organizations supported LFs by providing per diem during training workshops and meetings, and helping them set up income-generating opportunities such as selling livestock or seedlings. Among the main motivations for one to become a lead farmer mentioned by respondents were altruism and early access to technologies, followed by job benefits and social status. To remain in the position, LFs were motivated by opportunities for income generation and altruism, as well as social networking. Most of the organizations gave F2F a score of 8 (on a scale of 1-10) for effectiveness, so it is clear that the F2F approach is considered highly effective in Cameroon

Replication data for: A conjoint analysis of landholder preferences for reward-based land-management contracts in Kapingazi watershed, Eastern Mount Kenya
Unsustainable land-use decisions and agricultural practices have become the key drivers of deteriorating watershed services in developing countries. However, landholders may have little or no incentives to take these impacts into account in their decision-making process. In recent years, reward-based provision of environmental services has emerged as an important market-based incentive for motivating landholders to adopt environmentally friendly land-use changes and agricultural practices. In this regard, for instance, the Pro-Poor Rewards for Environmental Services in Africa (PRESA) project has emerged as a large network to support and facilitate reward mechanisms in Africa. However, in many African rural settings, little is known about landholder attitudes and preferences related to the alternative land-management schemes. Using locally identified sets of six key land-management attributes, this paper applies conjoint methods to evaluate landholder preferences towards alternative land-management schemes aimed at enhancing the provision of watershed services in the River Kapingazi catchment in central Kenya. Data were collected from primary sources through focus groups and a questionnaire based conjoint survey. Three conjoint models were used; a traditional conjoint ratings model, a binary logit model, and an ordered logit model. Results from the focus groups indicated that shortage of water for both domestic use and irrigation was perceived as the most acute environmental problem in the area. Deforestation, poor river bank management and agricultural practices were identified as the major causes of the problem. Results from conjoint models show that the three principal attributes influencing landholder's ratings and probability of adopting the proposed land management options were 'size of land area to be committed', 'length of contract period', and 'granting or prohibiting rights to harvest environmental products from the committed land'. Thus, these attributes should be the focal points in designing land-management contract for watershed services in the study area
Mekong Village Level Baseline
This study consists of village level baseline data and other related materials generated as part of the ‘Sentinel Landscapes’ initiative. The village level baseline data was collected using four survey protocols designed by the International Forest Resources and Institutions (IFRI). The data collected is used to understand the relationship between communities, local governance and forests. Four IFRI protocols were used for this purpose: (i) Forest Form (ii) Settlement Form (iii) Association Form and (iv) Product Form. The instruments facilitate the collection of political and institutional data at communal level for those communities that use those forests.

Awareness of Geographical Indications among Honey Consumers in Kenya
Honey sub-sector is faced with honey adulteration challenge, thereby negatively affecting economic returns because of consumers’ loss of trust. Geographical indicators (GI) labelling which provides means to trace the product could curb this problem. However, it is unknown whether consumers are aware of GI labelling. Using, data from a random sample of 522 urban consumers in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kitui counties in Kenya, it was found that only a third of consumers had awareness exposure, mainly through friends and mass media. Moreover, only a third of this knows what GI entails. Results of probit regression showed factors influencing the likelihood to become aware of GI as information, place and volume of honey bought, education, gender, consumer’s trust and high confidence in the quality of honey at farm gate.
