Replication Data for: Response to climate change of montane herbaceous plants in the genus Rhodiola predicted by ecological niche modelling
Climate change profoundly infuences species distributions. These efects are evident in poleward latitudinal range shifts for many taxa, and upward altitudinal range shifts for alpine species, that resulted from increased annual global temperatures since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ca. 22,000 BP). For the latter, the ultimate consequence of upward shifts may be extinction as species in the highest alpine ecosystems can migrate no further, a phenomenon often characterized as “nowhere to go”. To predict responses to climate change of the alpine plants on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), we used ecological niche modelling (ENM) to estimate the range shifts of 14 Rhodiola species, beginning with the Last Interglacial (ca. 120,000–140,000 BP) through to 2050. Distributions of Rhodiola species appear to be shaped by temperature-related variables. The southeastern QTP, and especially the Hengduan Mountains, were the origin and center of distribution for Rhodiola, and also served as refugia during the LGM. Under future climate scenario in 2050, Rhodiola species might have to migrate upward and northward, but many species would expand their ranges contra the prediction of the “nowhere to go” hypothesis, caused by the appearance of additional potential habitat concomitant with the reduction of permafrost with climate warming

Replication data for: Optimum pruning intensity for reducing crop suppression in a Gmelina–maize smallholder agroforestry system in Claveria, Philippines
On-farm trials were conducted to assess the effects of four branch pruning levels on maize grain yield, tree growth and stem shape. The experimental plots consisted of Gmelina (Gmelina arborea R.Br.) trees planted at 1 × 10 m with maize intercropped in the 10 m-wide alleys between lines of trees. Pruning levels consisted of retaining a live crown ratio of 60–70% (T 1), 40–50% (T 2); 30–40% (T 3) and of 20–30% (T 4). At the end of the experiment, the total maize grain yield was highest under the high pruning intensity (T 4) (18.06 t ha−1) and lowest under T 1 (14.48 t ha−1). Maize grain yield under the pruning regime T 2 and T 3 were 16.08 and 17.21 t ha−1, respectively
. Mean annual increment (MAI) in tree diameter was greater (5.0 cm year−1) under T 1 than those at T 4 (4.1 cm year−1). Pruning regimes T 2 and T 3 resulted in a MAI of 4.7 and 4.5 cm year−1, respectively. Financial analysis showed that maize-tree systems under T 4 were more profitable than under T 1 as long as the reduction of the average dbh at harvest were not greater than 1 cm. Pruning trees intensively also generated greater returns from labour than moderate pruning, as the greater maize grain yields under T 4 compensated for the cost of pruning and the lower timber yield. In the context of resource-poor farmers, intensive branch pruning was a practice that prolonged the period of profitable intercropping and was compatible with commercial timber production
Nicaragua - Honduras Household Baseline
This study consists of sex-disaggregated data and other related materials generated as part of the Sentinel Landscapes Network household survey baseline in Nicaragu-Honduras sentinel site in Nicaragua and Honduras. A total of 844 households were surveyed between September 2013 and February 2014 from 33 villages namely: Santa Cruz, Altamira, Sumubila, Nazareth, El Naranjal, Columbus, San Miguel, San Pablo, San Antonio De Upa, Rio Negro, Santa Ana, El Roblar, Los Limones, Verapaz, La Chimpinilla, Ilipo, Copen, Jardines De La Sierra, La Celia, Las Champas, Las Delicias, Cuyamel, Zapotales, El Venado, Limoncito, Las Guarumas, La Tambora, El Guancaste, La Bodega, La Gimerita, La Libertad, Los Laureles, Santa Marta. The data consists of information on household demographics, migration, education, asset ownership, income sources, household food security, progress out of poverty, crop production and sales, livestock products, participation in credit markets, social networks, and natural resource use. In compliance with the CGIAR protocol on collecting sex-disaggregated data, approximately 50% of the respondents interviewed were women. Review of seeds and seedlings systems in Ethiopia: East shewa, West Shewa and East Wollega zones
Key informants’ survey on seeds and seedlings systems in were conducted in Ethiopia i) map out the tree seed and seedling supply system in order to establish the role of the government and NGOs in the systems, ii) assess the quality of the germplasm as mapped out in the seed sourcing, collection/ procurement and distribution and ultimately seedling production; and iii) identify the organizations and individuals dealing with tree seeds and seedlings, their roles, supply channels, the support given to tree seed dealers and nursery operators available, challenges encountered in the system and opportunities that exist. The findings were expected to give early indications of research and development interventions geared towards overcoming bottlenecks in the systems especially on networking, information sharing and system sustainability
Review of extension systems in Uganda
A key informant’s survey (KIS) was undertaken to understand the extension system in Uganda. The survey sought to determine the existing extension structure, and approaches used by various agencies to disseminate agricultural technologies, information and skills to farmers, as well as the policy context within which such processes take place. The key informant interviews were conducted with government extension staff at National, district and sub-county levels. Extension personnel from Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) were also interviewed. Findings from this study will inform the ‘Trees for Food Security’ project on different extension methods and their suitability in scaling up/out agroforestry practices in Uganda
Replication Data for Diversity and Vertical Distribution Characteristics of Vascular Epiphytes in Bulong Nature Reserve Mengsong Section, Xishuangbanna
The first survey of vascular epiphytes was conducted using ground based inventory assisted by single rope technique in the recentlyestablished Bulong Nature Reserve, Xishuangbanna, China. Results indicated that vascular epiphytes were abundant and diverse there. On a total of 77 phorophytes in six plots (96 trees were examined in total, covered ca. 02ha area), 1756 individuals were recorded and were identified to 103 species (47 genera, 14 families). Compared with other regions, the epiphytes were as diverse as Paleotropics, and more diverse than temperate zone, but significantly less than the Neotropics. Orchids and ferns comprised 60%, 24% of the total flora, respectively, while others only took up 16%. The highest species richness and richest lifeform diversity was found in the middle canopy zone from 10 to 15m (51% of total species), where also supported high individual abundance (19% of total individuals). Besides the middle canopy, the most abundant zone of epiphyte individuals was detected at the base of the trunk (zone 0-5m, 24% of total individuals and 37% of total species), indicating another important niche for epiphytes in this forest environment. Primary hemiepiphytic figs were rare in the area and were not found on the surveyed host trees, while hemiepiphytic Araliaceae species (Schefflera elliptica and Tupidanthus calyptratus) were popular
