Emergence of portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) systems presents new opportunities for rapid, low-cost plant analysis, both as a lab system and in situ system. Numerous studies have extolled the virtues of using pXRF for a wide range of plant applications, however, formany such applications, there is need for further assessmentwith regards to analytical parameters for plant analysis. While pXRF is a potential powerful research tool for elemental composition analysis, its successful use in plant analysis is made more likely by having an understanding of X-ray physics, calibration process, and ability to test a variety of homogenous and well-characterized materials for developing a matrix-specific calibration. Because potential pXRF users may often underestimate the complexity of proper analysis, this study aims at providing a technical background for plant analysis using pXRF. The focus is on elemental quantification under different analytical parameters and different methods of sample presentation: direct surface contact under vacuum, placement in a sample cup with prolene as a seal, and without the aid of a vacuum. Direct analysis on the surface of a pXRF provided highest sensitivity and accuracy (R2>0.90) for light elements (Mg to P). Sulfur, K, and Ca can be reliably measured without the aid of a vacuum (R2>0.99, 0.97, and 0.93 respectively), although lower detection limits may be compromised. pXRF instruments provide plant data of sufficient accuracy for many applications and will reduce the overall time and budget compared with the use of conventional techniques. Replication Data for: Rôle des feux de savane sur les caractéristiques biogéochimiques des sols en zone soudanienne du Burkina Faso
Les feux de brousse dont les effets dépendent aussi bien de leurs intensités ainsi que de leur saison d’occurrence, sont considérés comme une perturbation écologique majeure des écosystèmes savanicoles. L’objectif général de cette étude est de générer des connaissances sur l’effet de la quantité du combustible et de la saison du feu sur le comportement du feu et les propriétés chimiques et biologiques du sol afin d’aider à la gestion des écosystèmes savanicoles. Les travaux de recherches ont été menés dans un dispositif expérimental couvrant 11,16 ha et installé dans la savane sud-soudanienne boisée de la forêt classée de Dindéresso (11° 13’ 59, 88’’ latitude nord and 4° 25’ 59, 59’’ longitude ouest). Sur la base de la quantité du combustible, trois traitements (Combustible réduit correspondant à la parcelle dont la quantité de combustible a été réduite de moitié; Combustible Normal pour la parcelle dont le combustible initial a été coupé et réparti de façon uniforme et le Combustible augmenté correspondant à la parcelle où la seconde moitié soustraite en CR a été rajoutée au combustible initial) ont été considérés en plus du témoin dans les deux régimes de feu. Les résultats n’ont montré aucune différence significative dans la vitesse de progression et dans l’intensité du feu. Cependant, un plus grand enrichissement en éléments nutritifs des couches superficielles a été observé. Le feu tardif a eu un effet plus néfaste sur les propriétés chimiques du sol que le feu précoce. L’effet immédiat du feu sur la macrofaune a été la réduction considérable du nombre d’individus. Toutefois, la quantité du combustible
n’a affecté ni la composition ni l’abondance de la macrofaune. Les enseignements tirés de l’étude sur le comportement du feu ainsi que les résultats sur l’effet du feu sur les paramètres chimiques et biologiques du sol peuvent donc aider dans la gestion des formations boisées en zone soudanienne mais des investigations doivent cependant se poursuivre pour affiner les connaissances à l’échelle du paysage

Replication Data for: Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Different Land-Use Systems: A Case Study of CO2 in the Southern Zone of Ghana
The emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) results in global warming and climate change. +e extent to which developing countries contribute to GHG emissions is not well known. +is study reports findings on the effects of different land-use systems on GHG emissions (CO2 in this case) from two locations in the southern zone of Ghana, West Africa. Site one (located at Kpong) contained a heavy clay soil while site two (located at Legon) contained a light-textured sandy soil. Land-use systems include cattle kraals, natural forests, cultivated maize fields, and rice paddy fields at site one, and natural forest, woodlots, and cultivated soya bean fields at site two. CO2 emissions were measured using the gas entrapment method (PVC chambers). Trapping solutions were changed every 12–48 h and measurement lasted 9 to 15 days depending on the site. We found that, for the same land-use, CO2 emissions were higher on the clay soil (Kpong) than the sandy soil (Legon). In the clay soil environment, the highest average CO2 emission was observed from the cattle kraal (256.7 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ), followed by the forest (146.0 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ) and rice paddy (140.6 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ) field. +e lowest average emission was observed for maize cropped land (112.0 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ). In the sandy soil environment, the highest average CO2 emission was observed from soya cropped land (52.5 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ), followed by the forest (47.4 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ) and woodlot (33.7 mg·m−2 ·h−1 ). Several factors influenced CO2 emissions from the different land-use systems. +ese include the inherent properties of the soils such as texture, temperature, and moisture content, which influenced CO2 production through their effect on soil microbial activity and root respiration. Practices that reduce CO2 emissions are likely to promote carbon sequestration, which will consequently maintain or increase crop productivity and thereby improve global or regional food securit
