Using contribution mapping to evaluate the research impact of Universities of Applied Sciences

    No full text
Research conducted by Universities of Applied Sciences (UASs) is frequently driven by professional practice where researchers are challenged with finding solutions to real-life problems. These real-life solutions are significantly enhanced by the participation of stakeholders. Through this inclusion and the resulting interactions, activities, and knowledge transfer, between the stakeholder and research(ers), impacts occur at a micro level. Micro impacts are the normal impacts that occur during the research process through interactions between researchers and stakeholders, that facilitate an unexpected and unplanned effect, be it positive or negative (Lykke et al. 2023, Mapping Research Activities and Societal Impact by Taxonomy of Indicators: Uniformity and Diversity across Academic Fields, Journal of Documentation, 79: 1049–70). Contribution analysis has been recognized as a viable method for evaluating micro impacts. One recognized contribution analysis framework is Kok and Schuit’s (2012, Contribution Mapping: A Method for Mapping the Contribution of Research to Enhance Its Impact, Health Research Policy and Systems, 10: 21) Contribution Mapping. It is also one of the frameworks acknowledged as conforming to several of the recommendations for evaluating UAS research impact. However, to do justice to the nature of Practice Oriented research, a new framework is needed. The purpose of this article is to test how Contribution Mapping works in real-life to answer the question: What can we learn from Contribution Mapping as an impact evaluation tool for a future UAS specific research impact evaluation framework? This article will examine the specificity of UAS research, the relevance of Contribution Mapping for evaluating UAS research, and the theoretical and practical implications of Contribution Mapping. Through inductive analysis conducted on information gleaned from interviews and focus groups, observations, challenges, and limitations are identified, and modifications suggested to take into consideration for a new framework

Low Molecular Weight Biobased Aromatics from Pyrolysis Liquids Using Zeolites: Yield Improvements by Using Pyrolysis Oil Fractions

    No full text
Pyrolysis liquids from lignocellulosic biomass have the potential to be used as a feed for aromatics such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) using catalytic upgrading with zeolites. We here report an experimental study on the conversion of various pyrolysis oil fractions to determine the most suitable one for BTX synthesis. For this purpose, the pyrolysis liquid was fractionated using several extraction/distillation steps to give four fractions with different chemical compositions. The fractions were analyzed in detail using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis, gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Karl–Fischer titration, and gel permeation chromatography. Catalytic pyrolysis experiments were carried out using a tandem microreactor with H-ZSM-5 (23) as the catalyst. The highest BTX yield of 24% (on a carbon and dry basis) was obtained using the fractions enriched in phenolics, whereas all others gave far lower yields (4.4–9%, on a carbon and dry basis). Correlations were established between the chemical composition of the feed fraction and the BTX yield. These findings support the concept of a pyrolysis biorefinery, where the pyrolysis liquid is separated into well-defined fractions before further dedicated catalytic conversions to biobased chemicals and biofuels using tailored catalysts.Pyrolysis liquids from lignocellulosic biomass have the potential to be used as a feed for aromatics such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) using catalytic upgrading with zeolites. Onderszoeksverslag Subsidies voor Groene Daken

    Get PDF

The challenges of evidence-based prehabilitation in a real-life context for patients preparing for colorectal surgery - a cohort study and multiple case analysis

    No full text
Background: Multimodal prehabilitation programs are effective at reducing complications after colorectal surgery in patients with a high risk of postoperative complications due to low aerobic capacity and/or malnutrition. However, high implementation fidelity is needed to achieve these effects in real-life practice. This study aimed to investigate the implementation fidelity of an evidence-based prehabilitation program in the real-life context of a Dutch regional hospital. Methods: In this observational cohort study with multiple case analyses, all patients who underwent colorectal surgery from January 2023 to June 2023 were enrolled. Patients meeting the criteria for low aerobic capacity or malnutrition were advised to participate in a prehabilitation program. According to recent scientific insights and the local care context, this program consisted of four exercise modalities and three nutrition modalities. Implementation fidelity was investigated by evaluating: (1) coverage (participation rate), (2) duration (number of days between the start of prehabilitation and surgery), (3) content (delivery of prescribed intervention modalities), and (4) frequency (attendance of sessions and compliance with prescribed parameters). An aggregated percentage of content and frequency was calculated to determine overall adherence. Results: Fifty-eight patients intended to follow the prehabilitation care pathway, of which 41 performed a preoperative risk assessment (coverage 80%). Ten patients (24%) were identified as high-risk and participated in the prehabilitation program (duration of 33-84 days). Adherence was high (84-100%) in five and moderate (72-73%) in two patients. Adherence was remarkably low (25%, 53%, 54%) in three patients who struggled to execute the prehabilitation program due to multiple physical and cognitive impairments. Conclusion: Implementation fidelity of an evidence-based multimodal prehabilitation program for high-risk patients preparing for colorectal surgery in real-life practice was moderate because adherence was high for most patients, but low for some patients. Patients with low adherence had multiple impairments, with consequences for their preparation for surgery. For healthcare professionals, it is recommended to pay attention to high-risk patients with multiple impairments and further personalize the prehabilitation program. More knowledge about identifying and treating high-risk patients is needed to provide evidence-based recommendations and to obtain higher effectiveness.BACKGROUND Multimodal prehabilitation programs are effective at reducing complications after colorectal surgery in patients with a high risk of postoperative complications due to low aerobic capacity and/or malnutrition. Geclusteerde woonvormen oplossing voor vergrijzing?

    No full text

    Get PDF
Facilitators and barriers to interprofessional learning, collaboration, and identity development during interprofessional internship in rehabilitation care: A qualitative study

    No full text
The growing complexity of care and healthcare workforce shortages in the Netherlands necessitates exploring interprofessional collaboration (IPC). However, the predominant single-professional education may result in a professional identity (PI) among healthcare students, which may not support successful IPC. Internships in student-run interprofessional learning wards (SR-IPLW) could foster interprofessional identity (IPI) development. There is a need for a better understanding of the intricacies involved in learning to work collaboratively, particularly when undergraduates are still shaping their professional identities. Our aim, therefore, was to identify facilitators and barriers for interprofessional education (IPE), IPC, and identity development among 21 healthcare students during a 20-week clinical placement on a SR-IPLW in rehabilitation medicine. An action-based prospective study using grounded theory analysis of nine focus groups across three semesters identified 17 theoretical codes. These codes are elaborated in a conceptual model highlighting facilitators and barriers for IPC and identity development, emphasizing the importance of fostering feelings of relatedness, competence, and autonomy. There are indications that professional and interprofessional identities changed during the internship. Implications for preceptors are delineated, showing the importance of personal relationships and elements of a positive learning climate
