    Reviewing the landscape of the decision-making process for pain assessment and management for people living with dementia:A systematic review

    AIM: To understand the steps in the decision-making process regarding pain assessment and management for people living with dementia from the perspectives and experiences of people with dementia, formal and informal carers.METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. Seven English databases were searched, including PubMed, Psychological Information Database, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, and ProQuest, using synonyms and derivatives for "dementia", "cognitive impairment", "pain", "pain assessment", "pain management", "decision", "decision support", and "decision-making".RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Pain assessment and management in dementia are complex, successive, and collaborative processes carried out by different individuals over a period based on one's understanding of the person with dementia but with high uncertainty. Pain assessment involves a certain degree of guesswork, while pain management is a trial-and-error process.CONCLUSION: More pragmatic approaches are needed to overcome challenges, including uncertainty and decisional conflicts.</p

    Regulation of sulfur metabolism in seedlings of the C4 plant maize upon sulfate deprivation and atmospheric H2S exposure

    The increased cultivation of highly productive C4 crop plants may contribute to a second green revolution in agriculture. However, the regulation of mineral nutrition is rather poorly understood in C4 plants. To understand the impact of C4 photosynthesis on the regulation of sulfate uptake by the root and sulfate assimilation into cysteine at the whole plant level, seedlings of the monocot C4 plant maize (Zea mays) were exposed to a non-toxic level of 1.0 µl l−1 atmospheric H2S at sulfate-sufficient and sulfate-deprived conditions. Sulfate deprivation not only affected growth and the levels of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds, but it also enhanced the expression and activity of the sulfate transporters in the root and the expression and activity of APS reductase (APR) in the root and shoot. H2S exposure alleviated the establishment of sulfur deprivation symptoms and seedlings switched, at least partly, from sulfate to H2S as sulfur source. Moreover, H2S exposure resulted in a downregulation of the expression and activity of APR in both shoot and root, though it hardly affected that of the sulfate transporters in the root. These results indicate that maize seedlings respond similarly to sulfate deprivation and atmospheric H2S exposure as C3 monocots, implying that C4 photosynthesis in maize is not associated with a distinct whole plant regulation of sulfate uptake and assimilation into cysteine

    Pathways of Musical Creativity:The Effects of an Intervention for Enhancing Teacher-Student Interaction during Music Lessons in Primary Education

    The dissertation Pathways of Musical Creativity shows that students’ musical creativity can develop in an intervention with Video Feedback Coaching for teachers, mediated by their support of students’ creative autonomy during classroom interactions in music lessons. Autonomy support entails fostering students' self-determined learning by providing space for their own choices and interests. The intervention introduced teachers to music-pedagogical strategies for enhancing classroom interaction in order to transition from a teacher- and method-centered style to a student-centered and autonomy-supportive interaction approach. This PhD research also took the nonverbal components of teachers' autonomy support into account because classroom interaction in music lessons is also nonverbal and musical in nature.Teachers changed their interaction style during the intervention to one that supported more autonomy, and they were less likely to return to mainly instruction and modelling. Although for verbal autonomy support a beneficial effect was observed, teachers found it more difficult to provide higher levels of non-verbal autonomy support in music teaching. In turn, students showed more originality and variation in their creative thinking and acting in music. Although over half of the classes engaged in playing more complex rhythmical patterns over the course of the intervention, at group-level no effect for this aspect was found in comparison to a control group.     Ontwerpprincipes binnen docentprofessionalisering op de Hanze

    Sinds vorig schooljaar worden 14 docenten van de Hanze middels een tweejarige leergang ‘Expert formatief handelen’ geprofessionaliseerd door Toetsrevolutie. In het eerste jaar ligt de focus van de leergang op het bijbrengen van kwaliteitsbesef, het ontwerpen van handelingsgerichte onderzoeksprocessen en het organiseren van transformatieve feedbackprocessen (Kneyber et al., 2022). Omdat er relatief weinig onderzoek gedaan is naar docentprofessionalisering in het hoger onderwijs (Vermunt et al., 2024), wordt onderzocht wat de effectieve ontwerpprincipes zijn van de leergang binnen de context van de Hanze. Gegevens worden verzameld bij de ontwerper van de leergang middels logboeken en interviews, en bij docenten middels interviews. De resultaten van het eerste jaar laten zien dat de ontwerpprincipes zoals beoogd door de ontwerper en ervaren door de docenten overeenkomen met de vier groepen ontwerpprincipes voor effectieve docentprofessionalisering zoals onderscheiden door Sims et al (2023), maar ook dat daarbinnen enkele context en doel specifieke ontwerpcriteria te onderscheiden zijn

    Multilayered Tissue Assemblies Through Tuneable Biodegradable Polyhydroxyalkanoate Polymer (Mesh)-Reinforced Organ-Derived Extracellular Matrix Hydrogels

    Multi-layer cell constructs produced in vitro are an innovative treatment option to support the growing demand for therapy in regenerative medicine. Our research introduces a novel construct integrating organ-derived decellularised extracellular matrix (dECM) hydrogels and 3D-printed biodegradable polymer meshes composed of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB) to support and maintain multiple layers of different cell types. We achieved that by integrating the mechanical stability of PHBV+P34HB, commonly used in the food storage industry, with a dECM hydrogel, which replicates organ stiffness and supports cellular survival and function. The construct was customised by adjusting the fibre arrangement and pore sizes, making it a suitable candidate for a personalised design. We showed that the polymer is degradable after precoating it with PHB depolymerase (PhaZ), with complete degradation achieved in 3–5 days and delayed by adding the hydrogel to 10 days, enabling tuneable degradation for regenerative medicine applications. Finally, as a proof of concept, we composed a three-layered tissue in vitro; each layer represented a different tissue type: epidermal, vascular, and subcutaneous layers. Possible future applications include wound healing and diabetic ulcer paths, personalised drug delivery systems, and personalised tissue implants
