    Long-term degradation of adsorbed natural gas storage in the MOF Basolite C300 due to Cn≥2 alkanes accumulation

    Adsorbed natural gas (ANG) storage using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising alter- native for efficient natural gas storage at moderate pressures. However, the presence of higher alkanes in natural gas mixtures can significantly affect storage performance by reducing methane adsorption capacity. Basolite C300, a well-studied MOF, offers high volumetric methane storage, but its long-term efficiency in real-world conditions remains a challenge due to potential pore blockage from hydrocarbon accumulation. This study investigates the long-term impact of Cn≥2 alkanes on the adsorption capacity of Basolite C300. Volumetric storage capacities of methane, individual alkanes, and a natural gas mixture were measured at 20 °C. The material underwent 100 adsorption-desorption cycles to assess the progressive impact of Cn≥2 alkanes on methane storage. The experimental results revealed a 63% reduction in methane storage capacity after 100 cycles, highlighting the detrimental effect of alkane accumulation. Higher alkanes were preferentially adsorbed within Basolite C300 micropores, leading to progressive pore blockage and decreased methane uptake. These findings underscore the critical role of gas composition in ANG systems and emphasize the need for mitigation strategies, such as selective pre-adsorption or regeneration techniques, to maintain long-term storage efficiency in MOF-based gas storage applications

    Software architecture for machine learning to aid sustainable digital transformation:A systematic mapping study

    Context: Rapid developments and adoption of machine learning-based software solutions have enabled novel ways to tackle our societal problems. The ongoing digital transformation has led to the incorporation of these software solutions in just about every application domain. Software architecture for machine learning applications used during sustainable digital transformation can potentially aid the evolution of the underlying software system adding to its sustainability over time. Objective: Software architecture for machine learning applications in general is an open research area. When applying it to sustainable digital transformation it is not clear which of its considerations actually apply in this context. We therefore aim to understand how the topics of sustainable digital transformation, software architecture, and machine learning interact with each other. Methods: We perform a systematic mapping study to explore the scientific literature on the intersection of sustainable digital transformation, machine learning and software architecture. Results: We have found that the intersection of interest is small despite the amount of works on its individual aspects, and not all dimensions of sustainability are represented equally. We also found that application domains are diverse and include many important sectors and industry groups. At the same time, the perceived level of maturity of machine learning adoption by existing works seems to be quite low. Conclusion: Our findings show an opportunity for further software architecture research to aid sustainable digital transformation, especially by building on the emerging practice of machine learning operations.     A meaningful and vibrant work environment

    Background and aim. Research highlights that poor workspace variety, poor zoning, and limited personalization can reduce comfort, privacy, and focus in hybrid environments. This study aims to anticipate these challenges and to develop and evaluate participatory design interventions for user-centred, efficient workplaces.Methods and data. This study adopted qualitative techniques, and was structured around a case study at an office in the Netherlands. The work environment was studied through needs assessments with interviews. Design interventions were subsequently explored in participatory focus groups, utilizing 3D scale models and 2D visualizations to facilitate collaborative input. Finally, these interventions were evaluated with end-users to determine their effectiveness in enhancing the hybrid work environment, focusing on comfort, functionality, and engagement.Results. The study revealed a lack in workplace diversity which compromised comfort and privacy. Additionally, the absence of clear zoning disrupted focused work and reduced workplace efficiency. There was also a lack of elements that foster personalization, identity, and positive experience, making the work environment less inviting and less inspiring for employees.Originality. By presenting solutions in direct interaction with users, valuable insights for facility management (FM) were gained into the supposed effectiveness of interventions in office design, organizational needs, and individual preferences.Practical implications. The use of 3D scale models and 2D visualizations can help FM to enhance the integration of organizational needs and user experiences, while simultaneously fostering employee engagement and a sense of ownership.<br/

    Home-based prehabilitation for frail patients awaiting liver transplant:preliminary results of the Fit4Cirrhotics@home Study

    Background Reduced aerobic capacity predicts poor postoperative outcomes in liver transplant candidates. While exercise is safe and effective, adherence remains a challenge. Home-based prehabilitation may improve participation, especially when tailored to the patient's fitness level. Objective To evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a home-based, bimodal (exercise + nutrition) prehabilitation program in frail patients with liver cirrhosis awaiting transplantation. Methods This prospective study started in October 2024 and includes patients with reduced aerobic capacity. The intervention combines high-intensity interval training and endurance training based on Steep Ramp Test results, resistance exercises, inspiratory muscle training, and protein supplementation. Primary outcome: VO₂ at ventilatory threshold and VO₂peak. Secondary outcomes: muscle mass (ultrasound, SARC-F, Liver Frailty Index), functional mobility, fatigue, quality of life, hepatic encephalopathy, microbiome, blood biomarkers, and postoperative outcomes. Feasibility is assessed through participation, adherence and safety. Results Of 41 screened patients, 8 were eligible and included; others were mostly too fit or ineligible. Three underwent transplantation before retesting. Among the remaining, adherence varied due to disease-related instability, yet several showed measurable improvement in aerobic capacity and muscle function. Home training combined with remote support proved acceptable and motivating for both patients and care teams. Technical monitoring allowed timely feedback and support, potentially enhancing adherence. Conclusion Home-based prehabilitation appears feasible and beneficial in selected, vulnerable liver transplant candidates. Inclusion continues toward a target of 24 patients
