Comparing SSEPs and MRI as Diagnostic Tools for Evaluating Compressive Myelopathies Caused by Disc Herniation
Compressive myelopathy is a neurological deficit that results from compression of the spinal cord and leads to a variety of symptoms and potentially serious consequences. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for diagnosing compressive myelopathy as it provides high-resolution anatomical images and is the preferred method for evaluating the underlying pathology, but somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) have also been used as a diagnostic tool as it provides information about the functional integrity of the spinal cord and assess the severity and extent of the damage. This article presents a comparative analysis of MRI and SSEPs in the diagnosis of compressive myelopathy and discusses the complementary role they can play in diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. Seventy four subjects were involved in the study, divided into controls (35) and cases (39) of myelopathies due to disc herniation. Severity of myelopathy for cases group were classified according to modified Japanese Assessment scale (mJOA) into; mild, moderate and severe. SSEPs showed more correlation with severity of myelopathy more than MRI (r=0.948, 0.599 respectively) and higher sensitivity of SSEPs for detecting severe myelopathies (91.7%) while MRI sensitivity was only (16.7%) sensitive

The Significance of Local Intraoperative Hemostasis and Laser Influence in the Prevention and Treatment of Complications During Thyroid Surgery
The article presents the results of clinical studies on the development of a method for local intraoperative hemostasis and improvement of reparative processes during operations on the thyroid gland. For clinical evaluation of the effectiveness of the proposed method, two study groups were formed for 237 patients with mixed, nodular and diffuse toxic goiter. The main group consisted of 98 patients, and the comparison group - 139. In the main group of operated patients, hemostasis was carried out according to the method developed by us, and in the comparison group, by traditional methods. Surgery included thyroidectomy, hemithyroidectomy, and subtotal thyroidectomy. In the main group of patients, for the purpose of hemostasis, Hemoben powder crystals with a size of 25-50 microns were used at the rate of 200 mg per area of 8-9 cm2, which was applied over the wound with a thin layer until a thin translucent film was formed, followed by irradiation of the wound with low-energy laser radiation (Sogdiana apparatus) with a wavelength of 0.89 microns, a frequency of 500 Hz for 2 minutes at a distance of 5 cm from the wound; then, for 5-7 days, percutaneous irradiation sessions with the same laser at a frequency of 80 Hz were performed daily in the projection of the surgical wound. The study showed that the use of the domestic hemostatic agent Hemoben provides complete hemostasis, and the addition of the technique by treating the surgical field with low-intensity laser radiation enhances the reparative properties of the drug. The proposed method for local hemostasis and improvement of reparative processes during thyroid surgery is characterized by a quick, effective and stable stop of bleeding, prevents the development of lymphohemorrhagic complications, and also reduces the frequency of early postoperative complications due to intra- and postoperative laser exposure

The Value of Lipocalin-2 in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune multisystem disease predominantly affecting women in the childbearing period. The majority of the pathology in SLE is related to deposits of immune complexes in various organs, which trigger complement and other mediators of inflammation. SLE is characterized by a very large spectrum of clinical manifestations accompanied by prototypic abnormalities of the immune system. Methods: This study was conducted on thirty SLE patients who were diagnosed according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) revised criteria. The patient was selected from the outpatient clinic of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation of Ain Shams University Hospital. Fifteen subjects, matched for age and sex, were included in the study and served as a control group. Comparison of quantitative variables between the study groups was done using the Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance (ANOVA) test with Mann Whitney U test for independent samples as posthoc multiple 2-group comparisons. A probability value (p-value) less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. All statistical calculations were done using computer programs Microsoft Excel 2007 (Microsoft Corporation, NY, USA) and SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) version 15 for Microsoft Windows. Results and Discussion: Our results come in agreement with the study done by Farzaneh and his colleagues in 2013, who studied fifty-two lupus patients; urinary lipocalin-2 levels in LN patients were significantly higher than those in non-LN patients. Also, our results were in accordance with the study done by Hammad, who studied 33 children with active SLE (22 with and 11 without LN) and compared them with 15 matched controls. Levels of urinary NGAL were higher in patients with LN than those without LN. These findings come in consistent with previous work done by Youssef and his co-worker in 2015, who studied 44 SLE patients and divided them into two groups, group I (twenty-two patients with LN) and group II (twenty-two patients without LN), the urinary lipocalin-2 had the highest mean levels in LN patients (group I) compared to group II and controls with a statistically significant difference. Also, between SLE patients without nephritis (group II) and controls. Conclusions: In this study, urinary lipocalin-2 was significantly higher in the SLE patients compared to the control group, and the lupus nephritis patients, when compared to the patients with SLE without nephritis,showed significantly higher levels of urinary lipocalin-2. The significant association of the urinary lipocalin-2 with the renal SLEDAI shows that urinary lipocalin-2 can be an early biomarker to diagnose patients with lupus nephritis and to detect renal disease activity

Study of the Choleretic Activity of Ferulla Assa-Foetida in Acute Paracetamol Induced Hepatitis
On white male rats on the model of acute medicinal hepatitis induced by paracetamol, the hepatoprotective property of the gum resin of ferula asafoetid and Legalon was tested. It has been established that the gum of the ferula asafoetida resin is not inferior to Legalon in its pharmacological activity. It is believed that the use of ferula asafoetid resin gum as a hepatoprotector, like Legalon, will increase the effectiveness of therapeutic measures for acute medicinal hepatitis and reduce its complication

Lung cancer remains a significant global health concern, characterized by uncontrolled cell proliferation and metastatic potential. This study delves into the intricate the correlation between oxidative stress and lung cancer., as well as the potential of paclitaxel as a treatment option. We explore the enzymatic activity of GST, CAT, and MDA in lung cancer patients and a control group, considering their smoking status. Additionally, we investigate the impact of paclitaxel on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in a malignant cell line. The results demonstrate significant variations in enzymatic activity and ROS induction in lung cancer patients, emphasizing the importance of these factors in the disease's progression. The findings shed light on the potential of paclitaxel as an agent for ROS modulation in lung cancer therapy, providing valuable insights for improved treatment strategies and enhanced patient outcome
