    Quantum optimal transport for AF-C*-algebras

    Get PDF
We introduce quantum optimal transport of states on tracial AF-C*-algebras to study non-spatial transport of quantum information, and view it as the pointwise case of a general parametrised one. We define quantum optimal transport distances as dynamic transport distances in a tracial but non-ergodic and infinite-dimensional quantum setting, called AF-C*-setting. We further extend foundational results of Carlen and Maas to the AF-C*-setting and develop a theory of quantum optimal transport yielding non-spatial lower Ricci bounds suitable for meaningful geometric analysis. Essential for our discussion is a coarse graining process arising from the underlying metric geometry as encoding scheme of the given tracial AF-C*-algebra. In the logarithmic mean setting, we apply the coarse graining process to show equivalence of the EVI_λ-gradient flow property for quantum relative entropy, its strong geodesic λ-convexity, a, possibly infinite-dimensional, Bakry-Émery condition, and a Hessian lower bound condition. We then define lower Ricci bounds of our quantum gradients using any one of said equivalent conditions, give sufficient conditions for lower Ricci bounds of direct sum quantum gradients and, assuming lower Ricci bounds, derive functional inequalities HWI_λ, MLSI_λ and TW_λ in the AF-C*-setting alongside their chain of implications. Fundamental example classes give quantum optimal transport of normal states on hyperfinite factors of type I and II with both non-negative and strictly positive lower Ricci bounds. An application is given by first and second quantisation of spectral triples

    Dynamical Effects in Heavy-Fermion Systems

    Get PDF
When atoms in solids have unfilled d- or f-orbitals, local Coulomb interaction often becomes non-negligible due to the strongly localized nature of those orbitals. A hallmark effect of such systems is the formation of a set of localized states at the Fermi energy due to the local nature of the Kondo effect. If the so-formed Kondo singlets become lattice coherent, a heavy Fermi liquid is formed. A long-standing open question is the fate of individual crystal (electric) field (CEF) states involved in this process. Lattice coherence of different CEF states could, in principle, occur at different temperatures and extents. This is the case in YbRh2Si2, for which scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) revealed a puzzling picture. The Kondo effect leads to a dip in the STM spectrum. Below temperatures where the dip was already clearly pronounced, a peak close to the minimum of the dip arose, which was attributed to the formation of lattice coherence. Simultaneously, additional peaks at the CEF energies arose, hinting towards lattice coherence in all states. In this thesis, I present a comprehensive overview of lattice coherence in heavy fermion systems, from the basics of quantum particles in periodic potentials to methods for interacting systems and how to modify them to include CEF states and methods for solving such systems with quantum field theory and numerically. I construct a minimalistic model for YbRh2Si2, including all four CEF states of the Yb3+ 4f13 configuration. With this, I present results confirming the observed behavior qualitatively. The Kondo dip and the coherence peak are reproduced faithfully. The first excited CEF level shows clear signs of lattice coherence, and higher excited CEF states show weaker signs of coherence. The non-Fermi liquid behavior in two-channel Kondo heavy-fermion systems is explored as a second topic. Intriguingly, such behavior was experimentally observed in PrV2Al20, whereas PrTi2Al20 showed regular heavy Fermi liquid behavior. It was proposed that the former sits closer to a putative quantum-critical point. While this could explain the observed behavior, another possible explanation can be formulated. The two-channel Kondo effect gives rise to a local non-Fermi liquid behavior. If this picture translates to the lattice case, it could fully explain the experimentally observed scaling. This option is explored as the second main subject of this thesis. I present a model incorporating the relevant CEF states of the Pr3+ 4f2 configuration and using ab initio band structure data. While including only the CEF ground state already leads to non-Fermi liquid behavior in the lattice model, the stark deviation from the experimentally observed magnetic susceptibility necessitates the inclusion of the first excited CEF state as well. This is shown to improve the scale of the onset of non-Fermi liquid behavior and reproduce the qualitatively correct scaling of the magnetic susceptibility, confirming the alternative explanation for the experimentally observed behavior

    Get PDF

Biodiversity and distribution of edible saturniidae (Lepidoptera) and their potential for mass rearing in Kenya

    Get PDF
Edible insects including saturniid caterpillars are traditionally consumed in sub-Saharan Africa. Saturniids are utilized both as food and a source of income for rural communities. This study includes a review of available information on edible saturniids in Africa. They feed on specific host plants and could either be univoltine or bivoltine depending on the location. For instance, Cirina forda (Westwood) feeds exclusively on Vittelaria paradoxa C.F. Gaertn (Sapotaceae) in West Africa while it prefers Crossopteryx febrifuga (Afzel.) Benth. (Rubiaceae) in Congo. They are attacked by parasitoids at different life stages. Local communities who consume them have vernacular names for different saturniid species signifying their cultural importance. Edible saturniid caterpillars are harvested in the wild which is unsustainable. Overharvesting and destruction of natural habitats point to the need to establish mass rearing protocols to ensure constant supply and reduce pressure on natural habitats. Communities process the harvested insects before consuming or selling within and outside their communities. Edible saturniids have an average protein content of > 50% and all the essential amino acids and an average fat content of >10%. Poor handling when processing can cause contamination of insects. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli and fungi such as Aspergillus spp. have been found in processed saturniid caterpillars hence the need for hygienic handling and proper post-harvest storage. Perceptions and practices among communities known to consume edible insects were additionally studied with particular emphasis on edible saturniids in Kenya. Popularity of the most and least preferred edible insects among the interviewees ranged from 88% for termites to 1.5% for lake flies respectively. Saturniid consumption is restricted to the coastal region among the Giriama community. Insect consumption varied by age, gender and occupation but was not influenced by the level of education nor region. Children and women were mainly involved in the collection and sale of edible insects. More than 98% of the respondents were familiar with saturniids, while only 67% were willing consumers. It is therefore necessary to create awareness on the nutritional benefits of edible saturniids and to process them into more palatable forms to alleviate malnutrition in the region. Seven edible saturniid species were identified including Gonimbrasia zambesina (Walker), Go. krucki (Hering), Bunaea alcinoe (Stoll), Go. cocaulti (Darge & Terral), Go. belina (Westwood), Gynanisa nigra (Klug) and Cirina forda (Westwood). They feed on 11 different host plants, and they all occur twice a year except for Go. cocaulti which occurs only once. Two colour morphotypes were recorded for Go. zambesina and B. alcinoe. Predictive models revealed that tropical and subtropical regions were potentially suitable for B. alcinoe and C. forda. Climate change may affect their populations negatively by the year 2055. Parasitoids observed in this study belong to the orders Diptera and Hymenoptera. Larval pupal dipteran parasitoids included Tachinids like Senometopia sp. (cf. evolans Wiedemann) that emerged from Go. zambesina, Go. krucki and Go. gueinzii; a new Ceromyia sp. (Robineau-Desvoidy) from B. alcinoe, Go. belina and Gy. maja; a Tachinidae sp. from C. forda and a Sarcophaga sp. from B. alcinoe. The large Ichneumonid parasitoid, Euryophion pisinnus (Gauld & Mitchell) was also frequently encountered as a parasitoid of B. alcinoe. Braconid larval parasitoids constituted a Cotesia sp. from Go. zambesina, Go. belina and B. alcinoe; Aleiodes trifasciatus (Enderlein) from Go. zambesina; Glyptapanteles maculitarsis from B. alcinoe and a Microgastrinae sp. from C. forda were also recorded. Egg parasitoids included a parasitoid belonging to sub-family Entedoninae of Eulophidae and Eupelmus sp. (Eupelmidae) observed on B. alcinoe and Go. krucki, respectively. Thirteen bacteria species were isolated among which nine were potential entomopathogens. They include Enterococcus mundtii (Collins et al.), Bacillus cereus (Frankland & Frankland), Staphylococcus sciuri (Kloos et al.), Staphylococcus gallinarum (Devriese et al.), Pseudomonas putida (Trevisan), Enterobacter hormaechei (O’hara et al), Enterococcus faecalis (Andrewes & Horder), Alcaligenes faecalis (Castellani & Chalmers) and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Palleroni & Bradbury). Eight potential fungal entomopathogens were identified. Life cycles of Go. zambesina and C. forda were recorded. This study improves our understanding of edible Saturniids in East Africa and provides a baseline for the future development of mass rearing technics

Evidence for tt̄tt̄ production in the multilepton final state in proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    No full text
The first evidence for simultaneous production of four top quarks is presented. The measurement is conducted by selecting events having two same-charge leptons or at least three leptons and by analysing 139 fb-1 of proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV provided by the LHC and collected by the ATLAS detector. In addition to simulated samples, data-driven methods are utilised for the estimation of background contributions. A multivariate discriminant is developed to separate tt̄tt̄ signal from the background processes using the Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) method. The production cross-section is extracted using a binned profile-likelihood fit to all control regions and the BDT distribution in the signal region simultaneously and is measured to be δtt̄tt̄ = 24 ± 5(stat.)+5− 4(syst.) fb = 24+7− 6 fb, corresponding to an observed (expected) statistical significance of 4.3 (2.9) standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis. The analysis model is used to set limits on the top-quark Yukawa coupling parameter γt . A pure CP-even (CP-odd) coupling is excluded for |γt| > 2.2 (|γt| > 1.6) at the 95% confidence level. No deviations from the Standard Model of particle physics prediction has been found

Investigating the Biosynthesis of G Protein Inhibitor FR900359

    Get PDF
FR900359 (FR) is a potent and selective inhibitor of Gq proteins, obstructing intracellular signaling of numerous G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). This makes it a promising pharmacological tool for investigating Gq-coupled signaling and potentially addressing diseases associated with aberrant Gq protein activation. FR is a cyclic depsipeptide composed of eight building blocks. Of particular importance are the side chain, N-propionyl-hydroxyleucine, and D-phenyllactate, which play crucial roles in FR’s inhibitory properties. FR is produced by an octamodular non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) machinery encoded by the frs biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC), which was found to be harbored by the bacterial plant endosymbiont “Candidatus Burkholderia crenata” and the cultivable soil bacterium Chromobacterium vaccinii, facilitating the study of enzymes critically involved in FR biosynthesis catalyzing unique reactions. FrsATE is a noncanonical thioesterase domain within the FR NRPS assembly line, catalyzing a rare intermolecular transesterification reaction between the side chain and FR-Core. To elucidate the reaction mechanism, experiments towards the comprehensive structural and functional characterization of FrsATE were conducted. Structural studies of FrsATE included bioinformatic analysis, protein construct optimization, and crystallization, resulting in the apo-structure of the FrsAT+TE didomain. Comparative analysis with homologous TE domains identified conserved structural features and substrate binding sites. 3D NMR experiments provided insights into protein dynamics during substrate interaction, laying a foundation for studying substrate recognition and catalysis. In vitro assays demonstrated flexibility in FrsA domain substrate specificity and confirmed the TE domain's acceptance of modified side chains, enabling the formation of novel FR analogs. These results provide profound insights into FrsATE’s potential for chemoenzymatic syntheses and structure-activity relationship investigations of cyclic peptide G protein inhibitors. Biochemical studies of the nonheme diiron monooxygenase FrsH revealed its interaction with the FrsA adenylation domain. Mutagenesis and in vitro assays identified residues critical for domain recognition during leucine &#beta;-hydroxylation, suggesting potential for NRPS engineering. The NAD(P)H-dependent dehydrogenase FrsC was shown to catalyze the reduction of phenylpyruvate (PPA) to L-phenyllactate (PLA), with a preference for NADPH. In vivo, L-PLA is incorporated into the FR peptide chain and epimerized to D-PLA by FrsE3. These findings enhance understanding of FR biosynthesis and its potential for chemoenzymatic synthesis of G protein inhibitors

Wetland Vegetation in East Africa – Integrity, Diversity, and Recovery Dynamics

    Get PDF
Wetlands in East Africa provide various ecosystem services. They are important habitats for biodiversity, regulate and purify water, store carbon, and provide wild plants for food and medicinal use. At the same time, they are suitable sites for agricultural production, with usually fertile soils and secure water availability for most parts of the year. As demand for cropland and food increases, driven for instance by demographic growth, economic development, climate risks, and upland field degradation, wetlands in East Africa are increasingly in the center of land use conflicts. The BMBF funded GlobE-project “Wetlands in East Africa: Reconciling future food production with environmental protection” aimed at researching the status quo of East African wetlands, evaluating management options for their agricultural uses, formulating policy recommendations, and building capacity among scientists in the region and beyond. The presented work was conducted within this framework, focusing on three key aspects of wetland vegetation, with specific methods and addressing the following overarching research questions. (1) Integrity: What is the ecological state of representative East African wetlands and how can it be assessed? For this chapter, the WET-Health approach was applied with a multidisciplinary team at wetland sites in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. In this assessment scheme, the ecological state of wetlands was estimated on scales from 0 (natural conditions) to 10 (complete loss of wetland properties) in four modules (“Vegetation”, “Hydrology”, “Geomorphology”, and “Water quality”). Additionally, at each study site, structural attributes of wetland vegetation and dominant vascular plant species were recorded. A “vegetation-based index of biotic integrity” (VIBI) was calibrated via multiple linear models to predict the WET-Health scores with vegetation attributes. In all wetlands, the WET-Health vegetation module showed the strongest effect with intensive agricultural use. While the prediction of WET-Health scores with vegetation attributes yielded satisfactory results for the vegetation module, the approach did not provide acceptable results for the remaining WET-Health modules. Nevertheless, the VIBI appears to be a useful strategy to rapidly assess ecological states of East African wetlands. (2) Diversity: How diverse is East African wetland vegetation? Here, we conducted detailed, plot-based vegetation surveys (relevés), comprising a record of all vascular plant species and their abundances. The survey was conducted along a hydrological gradient in the Namulonge inland valley wetland in Uganda, and in the Kilombero floodplain around the town of Ifakara in Tanzania. It included agricultural fields, fallow plots, and areas of undisturbed vegetation. Based on these relevés, vegetation units were identified with the Cocktail Classification approach. For each unit, an unequivocal definition was created and compiled in an expert system. In a second step, the expert system was applied to a database, comprising relevés from other East African wetlands (SWEAdataveg) and revised. Thirteen vegetation units were matched either with existing syntaxa or were newly described. (3) Regeneration dynamics: How does East African wetland vegetation recover after disturbance? Lastly, the recovery of vegetation after an induced disturbance was monitored over a period of two years at the Namulonge inland valley and the Ifakara floodplain study sites, with regular samplings of aboveground biomass and species composition at different hydrological positions in each of the wetlands. While uninterrupted favorable growing conditions led to a fast recovery with gradual changes in species dominances in the inland valley wetland, a natural reference state was not reached within two years. Yet, fast changes in species composition and occurrences of useful plants highlight the importance of early succession stages for biodiversity and ecosystem services. In the floodplain, both dry season drought and wet season submergence events restricted the recovery potential of vegetation. Overall, this work provides adapted tools to assess the integrity and diversity of East African wetland vegetation. Results support land use management recommendations to reconcile biodiversity conservation with agricultural wetland uses.
