Women’s off-farm employment and dietary quality in rural Africa
Most households in rural Africa are involved in smallholder farming, but off-farm employment is an important additional income source for many. Previous research has analyzed links between off-farm employment and wellbeing, but mostly at the household level, not considering that household members may be affected differently. In particular, gender gaps in employment, nutrition, and other wellbeing dimensions are widely observed. Here, we use survey data collected in Tanzania and Zambia to examine how women’s off-farm employment influences their individual-level dietary quality. Regression estimates with instrumental variables show that women’s off-farm employment improves their dietary diversity, including more frequent consumption of nutritious foods such as meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables. We also explore potential mechanisms, including changes in household income, women’s agency, and time allocation. The main results hold across various robustness checks, suggesting that improving women’s access to off-farm employment can help increase household income and reduce widespread gender gaps in rural Africa
Stringency and dissimilarity of Maximum Residue Levels affect bilateral agri-food trade stability
Food standards are rising in both prevalence and stringency. They protect consumers and may enhance demand stability but also pose compliance challenges to producers, with ambiguous effects on the stability of trade relationships. We analyze the impact of importers' Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) along with bilateral MRL dissimilarity between trade partners, on trade duration and volatility. We find that stricter MRLs in importing countries enhance trade stability, whereas MRL dissimilarities reduce it. The results suggest that importers with less strict MRLs than their trade partners can improve trade stability by reducing MRL dissimilarities. However, when importers have stricter MRLs, they might face a trade-off between the benefits of lowering discrepancies for trade stability and the downsides of reduced stringency for food safety
Population structure, reproductive behaviour and population density of the European wild boar, Sus scrofa, based on STR marker studies of hunting bags in Lower Saxony, Germany
Population densities and relative abundance of the European wild boar, Sus scrofa, has been steadily increasing throughout Europe for decades. Due to climate changes, wild boar is able to expand into climatic regions that have long been unsuitable habitats. Intensified agricultural use has resulted in the availability of large quantities of crop fields as a habitat and food source. The omnivorous choice of food enables an increasing expansion even into urban areas. Furthermore, wild boar has exceptionally high reproduction rates. This overpopulation leads to a variety of problems e.g. intensive crop damage or increasing numbers of vehicle collisions in both rural and urban areas. In addition, the wild boar is host to numerous zoonoses, of which African swine fever (ASF) in particular is a great endangerment to the pig fattening industry.
Despite a significant intensification of hunting measures, it has not yet been possible to reduce the populations. High reproduction rates, enormous plasticity and inadequate hunting strategies makes harvest rates insufficient. In addition, hunting success has been difficult to quantify in concrete numbers. This makes it difficult to realise the aforementioned population reduction.
Great efforts have also been made by researchers to find out more about the biology and behaviour of wild boar. For 20 years, the use of DNA markers, such as STRs, in ecology has been one of the central instruments for determining e.g. kinship relationships to demonstrate the influence of anthropogenic barriers or habitat fragmentation on gene flow between populations.
One of the most important sources of information for managing wild boar are the annual culling numbers, the hunting bags. However, the hunting bag is not suitable for population estimates based on simple extrapolations, as the actual population size is significantly underestimated. The central task of this work is to link hunting bag as a source of genetic samples and data with the use of STR markers to answer specific questions concerning genetic structuring, extent of alternative reproductive tactics and density of populations using kinship-based capture-mark-recapture (CMR) methods.
Using 14 microsatellites and 910 wild boar samples from different hunting bags, it was possible to identify eight distinct subpopulations in the study area. The reasons for the substructuring were not always the same and the genetic exchange between populations is rather low. In addition, multiple paternity rates, i.e. a litter of a pregnant female is fertilised by more than one male, of 23%-30% were detected in some populations. The assumption that male biased hunting strategies could influence MP rates does not seem to be confirmed. With the development of a genetic CMR estimator, it was possible to establish a population density calculation method that can compute robust population sizes when the necessary sampling requirements are met. The practical application of the g-CMR estimator resulted in an underestimation of the actual population size, mainly due to too small sampling sizes.
This study has shown that the hunting bag is a suitable tool for collecting genetic samples and generating genotype data, which can be used to answer a wide range of questions, but here is still a greater need for optimisation when calculating population densities. Unrestricted use of the hunting bags can therefore not yet be recommended at the present time. It therefore seems reasonable and purposeful to optimise the procedure presented here in further studies in order to use the full potential of genetic studies of the hunting bag
(1) systematische Übersichtsarbeit und Metaanalyse randomisierter Studien zu Film- und Folienverbänden;
(2) intrapatient-randomisierte, doppelblinde, placebokontrollierte Studie zu nicht-invasivem physikalischem Plasma (NIPP) zur Prophylaxe akuter Radiodermatitis;
(3) prospektive Langzeit-Nachbeobachtung einer randomisierten Patient*innenkohorte zur Erfassung chronischer Hauttoxizität nach adjuvanter Brustbestrahlung unter Berücksichtigung von PROs und objektiven Messungen;
Intraoperative Profiling of the Supracrestal Implant Complex Minimizes Peri-Implant Crestal Bone Remodeling : The Guided Bone Profiling Concept
(1) Background: Early-stage bone resorption following implant placement can significantly impact the long-term success of implants. This study evaluates whether a fully digitally planned implant position based on the E-point concept, along with guided profiling of the supracrestal complex, contributes to improved stability of peri-implant bone levels. (2) Methods: 29 implants were placed in 27 patients utilizing both immediate (Group 1; n = 19) and delayed placement (Group 2; n = 10) protocols. Implant position and emergence profile were preoperatively determined and consistently executed through guided surgery and CAD/CAM-fabricated restorations. Due to the subcrestal positioning of the implant, a corresponding bone profiler with a guide pin was used to shape the emergence profile and prevent the provisional restoration from impinging on the proximal bone. Provisional restorations were immediately placed to support the emergence profile. Bone level changes were documented radiographically over a two-year period. The first Bone-to-Implant Contact Level (∆ fBIC), change in highest approximal Bone Level (∆ haBL ), and formation of an emergence profile width (WEP) were measured. (3) Results: All implants and restorations survived after two years, no significant change in first Bone-to-Implant Contact Level (∆ fBIC = 0 ± 0.02 mm), no change in highest approximal Bone Level (∆ haBL ) of −0.23 mm ± 0.71 mm, and formation of an emergence profile width (WEP) averaging 0.18 ± 0.19 mm. (4) Conclusions: Despite the initial stress on the bone caused by bone profiling, guided implant placement and bone shaping, supported by an immediate provisional, have a positive effect on peri-implant bone stability
Evaluating the accuracy of generative artificial intelligence models in dental age estimation based on the Demirjian's method
Introduction: Dental age estimation plays a key role in forensic identification, clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis in fields such as pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. Large language models (LLM) are increasingly being recognized for their potential applications in Dentistry. This study aimed to compare the performance of currently available generative artificial intelligence LLM technologies in estimating dental age using the Demirjian's scores. Methods: Panoramic radiographs were analyzed using Demirjian's method (1973), with each left permanent mandibular tooth classified from stage A to H. Untrained LLM, ChatGPT (GPT-4-turbo), Gemini 2.0 Flash, and DeepSeek-V3 were tasked with estimating dental age based on the patient's Demirjian score for each tooth. Due to the probabilistic nature of ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek, which can produce varying responses to the same question, three responses were collected per case per day (three different computers) from each model on three separate days. The age estimates obtained from LLM were compared to the individuals' chronological ages. Intra- and interexaminer reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). Model performance was evaluated using Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Coefficient of Determination (R2), and Bias. Results: Thirty panoramic radiographs (40% female, 60% male; mean age 10.4 ± 2.32 years) were included. Both intra- and inter-examiner ICC values exceeded 0.85. ChatGPT and DeepSeek exhibited comparable but suboptimal performance, with higher errors (MAE: 1.98–2.05 years; RMSE: 2.33–2.35 years), negative R2 values (−0.069 to −0.049), and substantial overestimation biases (1.90–1.91 years), indicating poor model fit and systematic flaws. Gemini demonstrated intermediate results, with a moderate MAE (1.57 years) and RMSE (1.81 years), a positive R2 (0.367), and a lower bias (1.32 years). Discussion: This study demonstrated that, although LLM like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek can estimate dental age using Demirjian's scores, their performance remains inferior to the traditional method. Among them, DeepSeek-V3 showed the best results, but all models require task-specific training and validation before clinical application

Quantum Chemical Calculations of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on Coated Titanium Dioxide Surfaces
In this work, quantum chemical methods were used to search for alternative catalyst materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Substituted rutile TiO2 with and without monolayer coating, substituted Co(SbO3)2 and NiO with and without W2C as supporting material were investigated for their stability, surface configuration and electrocatalytic properties.
Oxidation-stable rutile TiO2, which is inexpensive compared to the state-of-the-art catalyst IrO2, is used as the starting point for the analysis of the acidic OER. Density functional theory was used to optimise the (110), (100), (101) and (001) surfaces. Single crystals were constructed according to the Wulff-Gibbs theorem with these low-indexed surfaces. The Wulff construction of TiO2 is a right-angled prism with truncated corners in agreement with experimental results. The most stable and dominant facet with over 70% is (110). For M0.5Ti0.5O2 with M = V, Nb, Ta, the Wulff constructions are similar to those of TiO2, but with smaller contributions from the (110) surface. Substitution with Sc and Y leads to oxygen vacancies. The surfaces of oxygen-deficient M0.5Ti0.5O1.75 with M = Sc, Y reconstruct.
To evaluate the OER activity and thus the suitability of the catalyst, the overpotential corresponding to the normalised maximum Gibbs energy difference of the individual reaction steps is used. The overpotential is calculated according to the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). For this purpose, the calculated adsorption energies of M-O, M-OH and M-OOH were converted into Gibbs energies using frequency calculations to obtain the zero-point energies, thermal contributions and entropy correction. This allows the potential-determining step and the overpotential to be obtained.
The overpotentials of IrO2 monolayer coatings on pure or 33% or 50% substituted TiO2 are similar to those of pure IrO2. This means that the iridium content can be drastically reduced while maintaining activity. In addition, RhO2 and RhO2:Nb1/3Ti2/3O2 were found to be two alternatives to pure IrO2 with better electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, solvent effects further reduced the overpotential of RhO2:Nb1/3Ti2/3O2.
The investigation was extended to Nb1/3Ir1/12Ti7/12O2 and tri-rutile structures. For Nb1/3Ir1/12Ti7/12O2, the most active adsorption site is 5c-Ir, but adsorption on 5c-Nb/Ti is the most stable. The surfaces of Co(SbO3)2 , Co0.5Ru0.5(SbO3)2, Co0.75Ru0.25(SbO3)2 and Co0.5Ru0.25Fe0.25(SbO3)2 were investigated as tri-rutile structures. Due to substitution, (110) remains the most stable surface, as in Co(SbO3)2, but (001) follows as second in the order of stability. The overpotential on Co(SbO3)2 is similar to that of IrO2.
In addition to the acidic OER, alkaline OER on NiO and NiO:W2C was investigated
