    Replication Data for: Natural durability of 9 tropical species suitable for round wood timber building: fungi and termites laboratory screening tests.

    In numerous tropical forest species, wood properties are poorly described and wood is under valorized. Especially very few is known about small diameter trees although they may be used, directly as round wood, in construction timber building. A selection of abundant species was done and characterization tests were performed to assess their usability as building material. The aim of this work was to determine the natural durability of wood from 9 selected Guyanese species. Oxandra askeckii, Goupia glabra, Lecythis persistens, Hymenopus heteromorphus, Pouteria bangii, Licania alba, Tachigali melinonii, Simarouba amara and Virola surinamensis samples were exposed to white rots (European and tropical), brown rot and European subterranean termites (using non-choice and multi-choice tests), in laboratory conditions by screening tests adapted from European standards. Following their performance evaluation, only two species are classified as durable against both fungi and termites: Licania alba and Pouteria bangii, meaning they can be used without treatment as building material under tropical or temperate climate. Other species result durable but with important difference between fungal and termite durability (Goupia, Lecythis, Oxandra), or moderately durable (Hymenopus), or slightly durable to sensible (Tachigali, Simarouba, Virola), meaning they cannot be used in construction without protection. The results obtained on wood decay resistance bring crucial information to assess the valorization of these 9 tree species in the Guyanese construction market

    Yams are important tubers widely consumed in developing countries in various forms, mainly boiled, pounded and fried. Tuber quality is a key criterion for acceptance by the various actors in the value chain. However, the genetics of yam tuber quality has not yet been comprehensively investigated. Given this lack of knowledge, we used population genomics and candidate gene association approaches to unravel the genetic basis of the three main quality attributes of boiled yam, namely texture, starch content and colour indices. We re-sequenced the whole genome of 127 yam genotypes with different quality attributes, and performed an enrichment of the already available functional genome annotation using comparative genomics. Population genomics analysis highlighted three main genetic groups and 1,053 genes under selection. We focused this work on three known quality trait-related pathways: pectin, starch content and flavonoid biosynthesis, and inventoried in the genome all the structural genes related to those pathways by comparative genomics. We improved the functional annotation of the three pathways with 48% more genes. A total of 18 candidate genes containing genetic variants significantly associated with the target traits were detected, including eight genes that were also found under selection. The texture-related candidate genes were distributed between the pectin and starch pathways. Overall, the use of comparative genomics has allowed the generation of an unprecedented genomic resource. The improved functional annotation of the yam genome is a promising predictive tool for identifying other core genes associated with any trait of interest to meet the growing need and diversified demands for yams. To complement the set of Dioscorea alata annotated genes, a comparative genomics approach was employed using a comparison of 45 genomes of species from diverse plant lineages. The species were chosen based on their genomes, phylogenetic distribution along the tree of viridiplantae and in the use of plant-models. They belong to the monocotyledons and dicotyledons, encompassing 17 different clades. The orthology analysis resulted in a total of 58,916 ortholous groups (OG) from 1,706,645 proteins. The OG were first used in this study to complement the set of genes in pathways involved in yam tuber quality

    NIRS Database on intact fresh yam for Dry Matter & Texture at CIRAD, Guadeloupe

    The objective of the generation this database was the evaluation the the cooking behavior good or bad of steamed yam by the determination of physicochemical parameters DM and texture. The fresh intact yam for cooking behavior database was created out of the RTB clones established at CIRAD, Guadeloupe. The samples constituting this database were harvested in 2021 where 53 genotypes were considered. The database is powered by the standard operating procedure on acquiring spectra from fresh yam intact using the ASD lab Spec 5000 equipment. Given logistical and technical constraints, the database consists of 53 genotypes RTB panel genotypes. Spectra from these genotypes were obtained from fresh pieces of yam immediately after harvest. At the same time, reference information related to the DM and texture parameters of the tuber was generated

    This is a database of quality traits of boiled cassava landraces, harvested at CIAT (Colombia) from two field trials: "Parentales/progenitors (36 genotypes)" and "Sensorial (28 genotypes)" in November 2019-February 2020. Five harvests were conducted: 19-63, 19-64 & 20-02 are from the field parentales in November 2019, December 2019 and January 2020 (9, 10, 11 months after planting), respectively; and 20-03 & 20-11 from field sensorial in January 2020 and February 2020 (10 and 11 months after planting). The dataset contains biophysical data (dry matter, water absorption, texture parameters, cooking time) and NIRS data of 160 samples. NIRS data was recorded on fresh blended cassava roots, using a Foss DS2500 instrument. The objective of the study is (1) to build a database of biophysical quality traits (DM, Water absorption, texture parameters & cooking time) and NIRS data collected on the same fresh roots samples; (2) Investigate correlations between biophysical data and NIRS data and develop predictive equations, in order to replace biophysical analyses with faster NIRS analyses
