The Meaning of Maśśāʾ as a Prophetic Term in Isaiah

In contrast with conventional etymological explanations of maśśā’ as a prophetic term, Richard Weis has proposed that this word refers to a genre whose definitive characteristic is the reinterpretation of an already promulgated prophecy. This article counters recent criticisms of Weis’s position and, using a simplified methodology, reaffirms his basic insight with regard to the maśśā’ texts in Isaiah

Remembering Three Nehemiahs in Late Second Temple Times: Patterns and Trajectories in Memory Shaping

This article explores the workings of a set of memory-shaping patterns that were influential in the construction of Nehemiah as an evolving site of memory during the late Second Temple period. Its main focus is on the three Nehemiahs of memory evoked in and encountered by readers of the three main sources that shaped memories of the Nehemiah: Ezra-Neh, Sirach, and 2 Macc. The article’s focus is on the generative pattern that scripted expectations about how good kings should behave, and which played an important role in the way memories of Nehemiah were constructed and communicated by these texts

The Priestly Tent of Meeting in Chronicles: Pro-Priestly or Anti-Priestly?

This paper examines how the Chronicler treats the Pentateuchal tradition of the priestly Tent of Meeting. The Chronicler consistently mentions the Tent of Meeting, but its cultic significance is reduced and put in an inverse relationship to the Davidic cultic system in Jerusalem. Such ambivalent treatment of the Tent of Meeting in Chronicles can be understood in the socio-historical context of the Persian period, especially within the Levites’ ideological struggle against the dominant, Zadokite priestly group
