A Qualitative Study Examining the High Turnover Rate of High School Principals in Southwest Georgia and Northwest Florida

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges and barriers to reducing the turnover rate of high school principals in Southwest Georgia and Northwest Florida as perceived by identified successful high school principals who have left this position. The high school principal turnover rate is high and increasing, resulting in a loss of resources expended on principal recruitment, selection, development, and retention while also adversely affecting student achievement (Bartanen et al., 2019). A qualitative approach was applied in this study to analyze data collected from identified high school principals and two teachers per principal participant who worked with the identified principal participant. An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was used to explore each participant’s lived experience and to identify themes.Green, RobertNobles, KathyTruby, WilliamEd.D.Curriculum, Leadership & Technolog

Breaking Barriers, Claiming Space: A Counterstory of Black Women's Leadership in P-12 School Technology

    No full text
The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic led to an extraordinary increase in the use of digital technology across P-12 schools. This situation required school leaders to adapt to educational technologies that quickly supported remote learning. Technology support roles were needed more than ever before. Although they remain an essential part of P-12 school systems, technology leadership positions are mostly held by White men. The representation of Black women in educational technology within P-12 school districts in the United States is notably lacking, a disparity that also extends to the literature. In particular, the voices of Black women in technology leadership positions remain largely unheard. This imbalance has disproportionately allowed the experiences and viewpoints of White men to influence the academic discourse. By highlighting the experiences of Black women in technology leadership roles within P-12 public school districts, this study aims to shed light on how their distinct identities influence their professional experiences. This contribution is important, offering a fresh and necessary perspective to the existing body of literature. Utilizing Critical Race Theory as a framework and Critical Race Methodology, this research probes the social and professional voyages of Black women serving as technology leaders, aiming to enrich our understanding with their unique insights and experiences.Suriel, ReginaGunn, NicoleMartínez, JamesEd.D.Curriculum, Leadership & Technolog

    Thermodynamics of Starch Gelatinization

    No full text
Starch gelatinization as a method of processing starch is widely used in both cooking and industrial processes. In this study, data on the thermal properties of starch across a wide range of starch sources was collected from the PubMed database and analyzed to increase understanding of the thermodynamics of the starch gelatinization process. This study also explored the compensation between enthalpy and entropy known as enthalpy–entropy compensation in starch gelatinization which is also observed in many other reactions and found they have a direct effect on the gelatinization temperature of the starch. The compensation temperature which is the slope of an enthalpy–entropy compensation plot is also compared between different starch sources, revealing how one starch differs from another in terms of its gelatinization process. The origin of enthalpy–entropy compensation, a topic of ongoing debate among researchers, is also examined for starch gelatinization using two methods discussed in the literature. Our findings suggest that it is more likely to have a physical origin rather than being a result of experimental artifacts. The findings of this study can guide researchers in exploring the applications of enthalpy–entropy compensation and compensation temperature in understanding other thermally driven systems. Additionally, they can aid the food industry in processing starch foods more efficiently.Kang, JonghoonNienow, JamesMubin, ShafatM.S.Biolog

    No full text
Food allergies pose health risks in schools, making effective management essential for student safety. This study examines the impact of demographics, school policies, and teacher training on food allergy management in Georgia K-12 public schools. Guided by resource deprivation theory and social cognitive theory, this research identifies predictors of teacher knowledge, self-efficacy, and the frequency and treatment of food-induced allergic reactions. Using a survey-based nonexperimental design, data were collected from 536 teachers and 58 school nurses across rural, suburban, and urban schools. Analyses included multiple regression, negative binomial regression, and bootstrap resampling.Hill, DeniseBrockmeier, LantryKim, DaesangEd.D.Curriculum, Leadership & Technolog

“Laying the Groundwork”: Concurrent Enrollment Teachers’ Experiences Teaching First-Year Composition Courses at Public High Schools in Georgia

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to understand how six educators at public high schools in Georgia made sense of their experiences teaching concurrent enrollment (CE) first-year composition (FYC) courses. The conceptual framework of the research was anchored in the concepts of liminality (McWain, 2018; Turner, 1966) and threshold concepts (Adler-Kassner & Wardle, 2016; Meyer & Land, 2005). Methods used were a bricolage of narrative inquiry (Clandinin, 2013; Kim, 2016) with phenomenological components (Seidman, 2013) to capture the rich stories of CE FYC teachers. Data collection included semistructured interviews, classroom observations, and researcher memos. Three interviews were conducted with each collaborator. Data analysis included the creation of narrative profiles for each collaborator as well as in vivo, process, and versus coding. Five themes were developed to highlight the experiences of the CE FYC teachers in the study: (1) experiencing isolation and detachment while seeking support, (2) balancing workload while desiring autonomy, (3) managing complex decisions while dealing with uncertainty, (4) nurturing students while preparing them for the future, and (5) looking backward while pressing forward. The findings of this study supported three pieces of advice to CE partners to strengthen CE partnerships and support CE teachers: (1) foster mutual relationships between high school and college writing faculty, (2) provide meaningful, relevant resources to CE teachers, and (3) consider CE teachers’ workloads. This study added to the literature on CE programs and FYC courses.Schmertzing, RichardJames, ChristineSchmertzing, LorraineEd.D.Curriculum, Leadership & Technolog

"Within the Web of Differing Versions": Examining Laguna Pueblo Reticular Temporality and Culture through the Work of Leslie Marmon Silko

    No full text
This paper analyzes the temporal understanding of the Laguna Pueblo Native American tribe. Unlike the dominant Western tradition that conceives of time in a linear, human-centric form, the Laguna embrace a plurality of time, with each individual(human, animal, or other) and aspect of life occupying their own unique, subjective timeline. This plurality of time and the infinite intersections that occur as everything interacts results in a web of time, rather than a straight line. Thus, I refer to the Laguna conception of time as reticular temporality. I argue that reticular temporality informs every aspect of Laguna culture, including perception of selfhood, epistemology, and an all-encompassing communal sense of being. These three areas guide the focus of the three primary chapters of this thesis. Although recorded knowledge about the Laguna Pueblo is limited, I will primarily analyze the culture through the literary work of Leslie Marmon Silko. Specifically, I will examine Silko’s novel, Ceremony, as well as Storyteller, a compilation that consists of short stories, poems, letters, memoir excerpts, photos, and more. Although these two works provide a well-rounded view of Laguna culture and storytelling tradition, this analysis will also be supplemented by Silko’s essays and interviews, as well as contemporary Indigenous Studies research. Furthermore, I will draw on research concerning nationalism, colonialism, temporality, linguistic/literary form, Native epistemologies, and more. This thesis highlights a severely under-studied culture, and makes a claim for reticular temporality’s undeniable influence on the Laguna worldview.Katawal, UbarajAiello, ThomasWander, RyanM.A.Englis

The Poison Trickles Down: Maternal Trauma in Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects

    No full text
This thesis explores the way maternal abuse cycles form and evolve in Gillian Flynn’s contemporary thriller, Sharp Objects. I refer to mother-daughter relationships as matrafemafilial relationships. Building off Carl Jung’s archetypes, I discuss how assumptions are powerful in the way they shape communal perspectives surrounding women and motherhood. When societies present strict views of motherhood, they may unknowingly contribute to the perpetuation of hidden abuse cycles. Maternal abuse is dangerous, often appearing under the guise of maternal care. In Sharp Objects, Camille Preaker’s mother, Adora Crellin, has Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, and the text suggests that her mother, Joya, may have also had the disorder. Adora passes on her abusive tendencies to her daughters, and the cycle of abuse remains in the family for a while. Eventually, the trauma spreads out, negatively affecting others in the community.Young, BrettWood, AdamSherman, HaleyM.A.Englis

Pride, Passage, and Pain: An Autoethnography Of A Black Woman In The Southeastern United States Of America

Black women in the United States of America have unique experiences to which no other group can relate. The intersectionality of their race and gender often leaves them in a vulnerable and lonely space that not many others enter. The racial and gendered microaggressions they face may follow them into their jobs, schools, and personal lives. This misogynoir culture negatively effects Black women daily as they navigate ways to respond. Communication Accommodation Theory is a theory in the field of Communication that explores several ways people can choose to carry themselves during social interactions. This study is an autoethnography exploring one Black woman’s experiences with microaggressions, her responses, and how those responses have impacted her mental health and wellness while experiencing racial battle fatigue. Keywords: Black women, intersectionality, microaggressions, misogynoir, communication accommodation theory, racial battle fatigue.Chapter 1: Introduction 1 -- Chapter 2: Theories 3 -- Chapter 3: Methods 7 -- Chapter 4: Results 10 -- Chapter 5: Discussion 20 -- References 24 -- Appendix I: List Of AbbreviationsEaves, MichaelFaux, WilliamStoll, ArringtonM.A.Communication Art
